World Group II

Romania v Canada – Sala Polivalenta, Cluj-Napoca

World No. 2 Simona Halep headlines a strong Romanian side for the visit of Canada to Cluj-Napoca. World No. 36 Sorana Cirstea, No. 37 Irina-Camelia Begu and Raluca Olaru will also feature for Romania in their first tie under new captain Florin Segarceanu – a former Davis Cup player and captain.

Canada has named a youthful team to face the Romanians – with 22-year-old Carol Zhao, 17-year-old Bianca Andreescu, 19-year-old Katherine Sebov and recent Australian Open mixed doubles champion Gabriela Dabrowski to face the Romanians.

Italy v Spain - Pala Tricalle "Sandro Leombroni", Chieti

Sara Errani, Jasmine Paolini, Deborah Chiesa and Elisabetta Cocciaretto will form Tathiana Garbin’s team to take on Spain – a team they haven’t defeated in Fed Cup since 2006.

The visitors, under new captain Anabel Medina Garrigues, will consist of world No. 32 Carla Suarez Navarro, No. 81 Lara Arruabarrena, first-time nominee Georgina Garcia-Perez and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

Slovakia v Russia – Aegon Arena, Bratislava

Slovakia has named world No. 19 Magdalena Rybarikova to lead the line for their clash against Russia. Jana Cepelova, first-time nominee Viktoria Kuzmova and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova complete Matej Liptak’s team, which is looking to defeat Russia in Fed Cup for the first time at the fourth attempt.

Russia will field an inexperienced team in world No. 76 Natalia Vikhlyantseva, Anna Kalinskaya, Anastasia Potapova and Veronika Kudermetova. Potapova, the 2016 girls’ singles champion at Wimbledon, is a first-time nominee, while the rest of the squad have each played in just one previous tie for Russia.

Australia v Ukraine – Canberra Tennis Centre

A strong Australia team will see Asheligh Barty, Daria Gavrilova, Destanee Aiava and Casey Dellacqua take on Ukraine in Canberra. The Australians have won just one of the last four meetings between the two teams – but this will be their first encounter on a grass court.

Fresh from a third round run on her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open, fifteen-year-old Marta Kostyuk is set to make her Fed Cup debut for Ukraine. Kostyuk will be joined by Lyudmyla Kichenko, Nadiia Kichenok and Daria Lopatetska in the Ukrainian team.

Serena is playing?? Her return is going to be Fed Cup? Color me shocked. Its a great way to really see if you are match ready for a tournament though with the knowledge the USA is the heavy favorite to knock The Netherlands to pieces.

Russia and Italy Both have horrible looking squads. Not to long ago both were arguably Fed Cup powerhouses winning multiple titles each (Russia has 4 Italy has 2?)....yikes

Anyone know where to stream this other than Tennis Channel?
Next WTATV stream is Qatar. I'm glad these middle of the night tournaments are passing! :)

Hopefully the Czech Republic can win again and we can forget the nightmare/abomination that was last year's Fed Cup.

if all those ladies can stay healthy and consistent (I'm looking at Kvitova and Safarova when I say that) they could be the team to beat IF they all play all year long. Only the USA could really challenge them and thats if the Williams and Keys all played all year (probably not likely)

Yeah, I was disappointed that the Czech team collapsed last year mostly because of internal problems.
They should be winning this every year to be honest.

Not sure how many matches they will be streaming, but the fed cup website seems to have live coverage.

Edit: looks like this is subscription based...

Yeah, was trying to watch this morning and realized the same. Also, doesn't look like it's available in the US, have to have Tennis Channel to watch it.
Shoot, it figures. Well, TTW is a resourceful bunch. I wouldn't be surprised if some other streams are made available.

Hopefully this won't hurt their teams chances. If Kvitova is playing well. Biggest name on the Swiss team is Bacszinksy (probably spelled wrong, I always spell it wrong), and she has been out a while after after wrist surgery I believe. Actually, I think this is her first event back?
st petersburg last but lost in the first round but she won the doubles with vera zvonareva

Golubic will play the singles and Baczinszky the doubles

Where is Aleze Cornet for France ? They look like they really need her for singles.

Wow, Marta Kostuk beats Gavrilova 7-6 6-3 on her Fed Cup debut.

She levels it for Ukraine 1-1 against Australia.

Ukraine is becoming quite the tennis powerhouse. Svitolina, Kostyuk, Tsurenko, Kichenok sisters.

Not somewhere you’d expect!

Didn't realise they had that many good players so highly ranked.

Come to think of it, there are really a lot of countries that are WTA powerhouses.

Germany, USA, Ukraine, Latvia, Switzerland, France, Australia, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, China, Russia, Belgium, Spain...

All with lots of good top 50 level players, current or former.

This is in fact an age of bloom in the WTA.

Marta remind me of Hingis with power! Gavrilova simply outplayed.
But grass is not Gavri strong suit anyway.

If only she fix her serve, Marta is unstoppable.

"We’ve chosen grass and I believe it’s our best chances to beat Ukraine, so it is what it is and I think I definitely didn’t play my best and I don’t think the surface would have made a big difference,’’ Gavrilova said later.

“(Kostyuk) definitely plays beyond her age and she played pretty good tennis today and she has got nothing to lose. She pulled out some crazy shots in the end and she’s on a winning streak. She hasn’t lost a match in a while so I’m sure she’s really confident.’’

Barty easily beats Kostyuk 6-2 6-3 to give Australia the 2-1 leads over Ukraine.

Gavrilova v Kichenok underway now.
I happen to live here in Canberra and so have been attending these this weekend, as they're just across town from my place.

Nice win for Barty.
Australia has got this.

Yeah hopefully! Even if Gavrilova manages to lose this to Kichenok (which would be embarrassing but currently looks possible), you'd assume the fantastic doubles combination of Barty/Dellacqua would beat Kichenok/Lopatetskaya.

Hopefully Gavrilova can manage a win. Losing to both Kostyuk and Kichenok this weekend would be awful, Kostyuk not inside the top 150, Kichenok doesn't even have a singles ranking cause she mostly plays doubles, meanwhile Gavrilova is top 30..

Kichenok wins the 2nd set 6-2 over Gavrilova.

Nadiya Kichenok doesn't really play singles anymore. Played just one singles match in the last 12 months, that was a qualifying match in Dubai which she lost. Her previous match before that? Qualifying for Guanghzou in 2016. She lost that too. She currently doesn't have a singles ranking..

That's pretty bad from Dasha if she loses to her.
