Kichenok's last singles win was qualifying for Florianópolis in 2016. She defeated her twin Lyudmyla to qualify for the main draw where she played (and lost to) .... Jelena Ostapenko.

Her sister got in as a lucky loser for that tournament and made the QF where she defeated the defending champ Pereira in the 1R.

Looks like the twin sisters will likely be the pair that plays the deciding doubles rubber against Barty/Dellacqua but we will see.

What's with the cancelled Canada-Romania matches? Carol Zhao sick/injured? Becu played Sebov instead of Zhao. And now the Andreescu-Cirstea match cancelled???

UPDATE:

Just noticed that Zhao is playing doubs with Dabrowski against the Romanians. It appears that Zhao, who was originally slated to play singles, switched events with Sebov. Sebov lost her singles match to Becu. However, Zhao/Dabrowski won their doubs in 3 sets. Did Canada decide to sacrifice the singles match for a doubles win?

Serena's looking awfully rusty in her doubles match with sis. The Dutch players are going at her, never seen that before.

She doesn't look close to competitive singles yet. Commentators said she had to lay around for a couple months with zero cardio due to health issues. Nice to see her on court though.

What happened to Lauren Davis? She was originally partnered up with Serena for the doubles.

I think Serena is done. I know she wants to come back and be competitive, but I don't see it happening.

I think Serena can make a comeback but she needs to get back in tennis shape. It hasn't even been 6 months since she gave birth and I think she would do herself a disservice if she attempted a comeback without at least 6 months to a year of training.

Sold out crowd was there to see Serena. Since it was a dead rubber it was decided to play the sisters, which is what everyone wanted to see. I'm sure Lauren Davis was fine with it.

After her inspirational match against Simona Halep at the AO, I would think that plenty would have loved to see her in action again. The WTA needs the new blood. From her tweet 6 hrs ago, Lauren appeared to be psyched to play

So Serena looks bad?
Yes, she is not ready for prime time tennis yet. If she puts in the work, she could be ready for USO, but no sooner in my opinion. The question is whether she still has the drive and desire to put in the work. My guess is she will not win another major.

Speaking of looking bad, check out how out of shape Sloane looks in this vid from Genie today.

Azarenka came back 6 months after giving birth. But she's younger than Serena so maybe recover faster. Let see if Serena pulls out IW or not.

Bencic plus Golubic against the Czechs was a suicide mission.

If Bacsinksy was 100% and felt ready to play singles that tie might have been minorly more entertaining. Her game at the very least could have annoyed all the Czech players a little bit. As it was, it was a murder.

I was reading where she said this was her first time traveling with her daughter like this, for competition, and she needs to learn how to balance motherhood and the tour. That can't be an easy balance to achieve for anybody. Trying to work out, get back in shape after giving birth (she certainly did not look anywhere close to 100% physically yet and who can blame her) and practice all with a newborn...she's gonna have to figure out something that works if she truly wants to get back on top. However she has a real solid core of support outside of tennis, and she a man she loves, beautiful baby. I mean, if she can't truly get it all back on the court, its not like she doesn't have anything off of it waiting for her with open arms.

Shes a fighter though, we've all seen Serena win things taped like a mummy, or after collapsing screaming from cramps (I will not forget that match at Wimbledon, that was just eerie). Its on her. Serena does have a lot of common sense though, she wants it but I think she won't push herself to much with her daughter there now. I think she might make an effort to really be ready for Wimbledon, anything before that to her probably doesn't matter much right now.

Next round France vs US and Germany vs Czech Republic in the world group. The lineups as always will be the deciding factor. If all of the semifinals are played with the same squads as the quarters it would clearly be the Czech's versus the US in the final. Germany can make a contest of it if Kerber, Petkovic and Gorges play. Mladenovic would have to win both singles and partner for a doubles win to pull the French over the US which would be a huge ask of her.

Unless Garcia played. Which will be a team consist of 2 players basically as they 'have' to play doubles together!
Will be very exciting if all top players play.

Isn’t Garcia’s lack of Fed Cup participation why Mladenovic and the other French women were talking smack about her last year? Contrasted her to Dodin, who did play for country.

Would they even agree to play together? I thought they had like, mean girls beef or something stemming from Garcia wanting to focus on singles.

Well she's French no 1, so if she decided to play she will get the spot I believe. Would be interesting if they mature a bit since it might be another best chance for them to get Fed Cup.

US Open champion Sloane Stephens, runner-up Madison Keys and semifinalist CoCo Vandeweghe, along with former No. 1 doubles player Bethanie Mattek-Sands, are on the American roster that will face France in the Fed Cup semifinals.

The U.S. Tennis Association has announced captain Kathy Rinaldi's picks for the April 21-22 matches on an indoor clay court in Aix-en-Provence, France.

Stephens is ranked No. 9 this week, with Keys 13th and Vandeweghe 16th.

Mattek-Sands returned to action last month after being sidelined since July, when she dislocated her right kneecap and ruptured her patellar tendon during a singles match at Wimbledon.

The French team is Kristina Mladenovic, Pauline Parmentier and Amandine Hesse.

Both countries are missing their highest-ranked player: No. 8 Venus Williamsfor the U.S. and No. 7 Caroline Garcia for France.

The U.S. owns an 11-2 record against France in the Fed Cup. The French won their most recent meeting, in 2014.

In the other semifinal, sixth-ranked Karolina Pliskova and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who is ranked 10th, will lead the Czech Republic against Germany.

Germany will be led by former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber and Julia Goerges. Tatjana Maria and doubles specialist Anna-Lena Groenefeld also have been chosen by captain Jens Gerlach.

It will be the 10th straight Fed Cup semifinals for the Czechs, who will play on indoor clay at Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, Germany.

Captain Petr Pala has also named Barbora Strycova but has yet to decide on the fourth player.

World Group play-offs
2017 finalist Belarus goes with the same team for a third straight tie, with Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Aryna Sabalenka, Vera Lapko and Lidziya Marozawa all nominated again. There is, however, a change of captain with Tatiana Poutchek, who held the role from 2012 to 2015, returning to the captaincy in place of Eduard Dubrou.

The Slovakia team that will travel to Minsk to face the Belarusians is led by the world No. 104, 19-year-old Viktoria Kuzmova who made her Fed Cup debut in February. She is joined by Jana Cepelova, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Rebecca Sramkova.

World No. 1 Simona Halep will spearhead the Romania campaign for promotion back to the World Group. She is joined by three players all ranked in the world's top 40 - Sorana Cirstea, Irina Camelia Begu and Mihaela Buzarnescu.

Switzerland has nominated a team of three players as it looks to secure a fourth-straight year in the World Group. Timea Bacsinszky, Viktorija Golubic and Jil Teichmann are the trio confirmed to travel to Cluj-Napoca next week.

Australia will call on the services of world No. 18 Ashleigh Barty and world No. 24 Daria Gavrilova for their play-off tie in Woolongong. The pair will be joined by veteran Sam Stosur as well as rising star Destinee Aiava in Alicia Molik's team.

Netherlands, meanwhile, offer debuts to Quirine Lemoine and Indy de Vroome, with Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs also selected.

Italy combines experience and youth, with two-time Fed Cup champion Sara Errani leading a team that also contains 22-year-old Jasmine Paolini, 21-year-old Deborah Chiesa and 20-year-old debutant Jessica Pieri.

World No. 20 Elise Mertens will lead Belgium when it travels to Genoa, with Alison Van Uytvanck, Kirsten Flipkens and Ysaline Bonaventure also in the team. It will be the first tie for new captain Ivo Van Aken.

Romania and Australia should be on WG next year.

Bump because this week Fed Cup deserve the hype.

Greatest line up for years all across ties.

Top 20 who absent:
Svitolina who is understandably avoid travelling to Canada when she's scheduled to play in Stuttgart next week.
Garcia who still upset because of last year?
Venus Williams because Queen need to rest
Kasatkina because we don't deserve Kasatkina vs Ostapenko in WG II play off
Rybarikova
