Yeah, it's funny. Now apparently Fed fans must not dare hope he'll show up in better form at Wimbledon.

He was better last year but it's not like didn't have dips in his level either as evidenced by losses to Donkey and 40 year old Haas.

That poster is a joke.

It was the first Federer match I was able to watch live during the grass season. Phew. I won't be able to watch live tomorrow. You're welcome. :)

(If he does go back to winning in routine fashion, I'll make myself scarce during the weekend as well.)

Garbage was maybe too strong a word, he was decent at the AO and good in Rottadam - definitely good for the last 3 matches last week as well. IW and Miami were poor. Overall I've not been impressed like I was last year by his play.

He was good in Rottadam and Stuttgart after the first match but otherwise he's not impressed me IMO. Even at the AO he played well enough but he never blew me away.

Maybe I am just expecting too much.

You are. Seriously, step back and think for a second. He's 23-2 with 3 titles and a final in 5 tournaments, with the 6th ongoing. At 36 years old.

I think his AO form this year tends to get under-rated.

played pretty well vs Struff (who put up a good fight) and vs Gasquet
the bedene and fucsovics matches - he just did enough to win. the fucsovics match was boring though.

I thought he played excellent vs Berdych after going a break down in the first set.

was dismantling Chung in the semi before Chung retired.

final - was a good match, though not great. Only bad patch of play was from 3-2 up in the 4th set to 1-0 in the 5th set (Cilic was redlining as well)

His AO 17 form definitely gets overrated, IMO. People tend to only think about the Berdych match and the 5th set of the final. His form throughout the entire tournament was up and down, as it was throughout the final.

I thought his AO 18 form was fine. At this stage of his career, it's "survive and advance" as efficiently as possible. He won. That's all that matters.

I am disappointed in Fed's lack of commitment.

Tbh I didn't care if he won that TB or not. I don't know if he'll be "tired" at Wimbledon if he goes 3 sets with every other guy in the draw. No way to tell now, but these types of matches in places like Halle just seem so pointless to me at this point. Beating Kyrgios and Raonic might pay off, but it's not like he'll ever lose to Paire at Wimbledon.

agree..

Yep, it's called The Tour.
Yes, that's the tour but think how mind-numbingly boring it must be to visit the same tournaments(non-slams) year after year for over a decade! How many players besides Federer, Murray, Djokovic, and Nadal try at every tournament? Zero. If you are in the top 20, you make enough to not worry about lesser tournaments.

Then I guess we have to ask these players why they are still putting themselves through it when they've all been there, done that so many times before? Clearly they still want to play or why bother!

Yes, they want to play in general and make some good cash but they don't try for every single tournament(unless it's FedalMurrovic) Isn't that obvious to all by now?

I look at that Halle draw and can't get enthused about it despite Federer being there. If Federer wasn't there, there would be about 100 people in the stands to see those players in the draw.

Ahhh, was reading the thread not logged in for a bit. Logged in again quickly, most of the garbage gone. Poor performance by Fed, will be interesting tomorrow vs Ebden who thrives on grass.

Can hardly be the cash as they've all made more than they could possibly spend in 3 lifetimes so it is obviously records they are still chasing and using the smaller events as a means towards achieving them eg. Fed keeping the #1 ranking.

Nishikori, Zverev and Thiem should have been crowd-pullers, especially home favourite Zverev. But they all disappointed leaving Fed standing alone as usual (although Paire did give him a scare today which was totally unexpected). Fed is contracted to play Halle so has little choice but to play it (unless he can pull a sickie which would be difficult to swallow after having taken the entire clay season off again).

Zverev or Nadal will be the best winners. Both hated by Fed fans + the bonus of Fed not winning Wimbledon.

I would think Federer fanatics(nuts) would prefer if Zverev wins over Nadal. If Nadal wins another Wimbledon, some of the Fed fanatics will go off the deep end.

In the meantime, the draw will be crucial. You can't count Nadal out with this pathetic field. I doubt Zverev will come close to winning Wimbledon. He's not good enough yet.

He played Hopman cup and AO. Played IW and Miami without hurting his back.
Didn't play consecutive days at Hopman, then had a week off before AO, and breaks between the AO matches.

IW& Miami are also played over 1.5 weeks, so he gets the extra days in between. I think that works well for him at his age.

Not saying he can't win consecutive one-week tournaments, particularly with the path he has at Halle, but he's going to feel it on Sunday.

It's more likely that Federer wins the US Open than either of those win Wimbledon, or even make it to the SF.

Who's made more than they can spend in three lifetimes? FedalMurrovic. Not most of the rest! I'm not talking about FedalMurrovic, I'm talking about the other baboons who can't win two matches in a row let alone two tournaments.

As for the Halle draw, I agree that Zverev, Thiem, etc. looked good on paper. But these youngsters are seriously all overhyped. Hewitt and Roddick are Gods compared to them.

I'm not sure about that, i.e. concerning Nadal. The draw will be paramount. He could get a great draw and Fed could lose early. Who's going to beat him in that case? Dimitrov?

At 36, playing 4 days in a row, one week out from Wimbledon, is not going to have any positive effect. I think he’ll be near the limits of his fitness if he makes Wimbledon final. You only have to read how many times he’s said in interviews that recovery time is longer at his age. He’s playing 4 days straight...

I don’t think he’ll make the Halle final.

Oh, totally; just to be clear I was declaring disappointment at Fed not fully committing to the muggery and actually losing as I requested, not that I was disappointed in his commitment to winning the match.

He played 4 matches in 4 consecutive days the last year at Halle and this didnt affect him at Wimby.I think he can make final here - I dont think he will lose to Ebden and Sugita/Kudla.

Hey, we need to comfort ourselves through the night.....

There’s always this, all tennis fans should have one:

And, before anybody goes on about skipping clay, that rest means little going forward. The idea that he’ll have extra energy stored from the last few months is absurd.

Skipping clay was literally about avoiding injury chasing tournaments he knows he won’t win, not storing energy like a human battery.

Yep, but this year he played a full hand at Stuttgart too. And he’s a year older, which at 36 might feel like 3 years older.
