@Federer and Del Potro to fight for the title.

The dream final and the final that a lot of people expected.

Both players had their struggles in the tournament, both were a set and a break down (Del Potro against Mayer, Federer against Coric). Fed leads the h2h 18-6 but has pretty much dominated Del Potro in tournaments played in the first 3 months of the season. Can Del Po break the trend or is it fedr?

I'll be rooting for Federer still but Del Potro winning would be great for tennis. Technically Federer shouldn't even be in the final so I'm glad he's just in it. Popcorn match and (hopefully) a great way to end a very mediocre tournament.

I'm thinking Federer in 3. Del Potro is certainly capable of bringing it so we'll have to see how RF plays. If he's under par he might struggle early on, but could then rely on outlasting the Argentine

My take on the match:

This feels like Rotterdam to me. A fluctuating Federer but after solving and answering all of the questions Coric asked (much like Haase and Kohli did in Rotty) - I expect a much cleaner performance from Fed tomorrow.

JMDP has been susceptible to getting broken a lot this tournament and has poor BP conversion himself.

I think Federer is eager to continue to avenge his 2017 USO defeat at the hands of Thor-Potro.

Will be ecstatic with either result because I feel like both will have really earned it. Maybe not the strongest draws they could have faced but they navigated them with a lot of poise and resolve.

I just get the feeling Federer is going to be Denyerer once again.

Del Potro so richly deserves a MS title. For Fed it would just be another wank. But instead those of us Delpo supporters will have to suffer through another superficial win for Fed.

@BeatlesFan
I’m a huge Fed fan but I would like for Del Potro to win tomorrow. He’s a great guy and deserves it.

Big reason why a part of me is still leaning toward rooting for Federer is that I do have that YE#1 in mind. Securing every last point in IW could prove to be a massive boon in said race.

If Federer wasn't defending the points I'd likely be 70-30 in rooting for Del Potro to get his first M1000.

But I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't like to see Fed end YE#1 one more time.

The main reason tomorrow is exciting is because Federer isn't at his best. If he turns on the heat I doubt there's anything Del Potro can do to win. Federer has historically handled him in the first 3 months of the season with ease. Hasn't even dropped a set and only their match in Dubai in 2012 was close (2 tie-breaks). Other than that Del Potro hasn't won more than 4 games in any set.

So totally depends on which Federer shows up tomorrow.

This is very tricky. It could end 2-0 for Federer with no problems or it could end 2-0 for Del Potro without problems. If Federer is on his game he will win but again it depends on his form

It's very different from Coric. If Fed does what he did today and go to the wrong way while playing terrible he'll get slaughtered. Coric can kinda lock him into hitting backhands. That's the best he can do. Del Potro can hit the forehand and force Federer to watch a ball fly by.

While capable, I don't expect Delpo to win this in anything other than 3 (if he wins) unless he's absolutely goating on the Thorhammer or if Fed is terrible.

Del Potro will likely tense up like Coric did. This is a huge moment for him.

It's a 4th Masters Final for Del Potro, the so called "gentle giant" of men's tennis. He had to play Murray, Nadal and Djokovic in the other three.
All went the distance and all were winnable.

1 masters final each for delpo vs the big 4.
Cool achievement. :)
Re: your reply to in the other thread:
I partly meant with him choking those finals due to not pacing himself better (he could have won Paris last year if he hadn't peaked for Stockholm and Basel beforehand). Letting Nadal vulture IW for the 3rd time. :( And Novak was drunk in Shanghai.

I'd be delighted Del Potro won his first Master 1000.
He has been so unlucky running into Nadal, Djokovic and Murray playing their best tennis and He lost all of them in tight matches.
No the same luck like Zverev, Cilic, Sock and Dimitrov

Dream final! Federer in 3, however I’d be just as happy for Delpo to win a first M1000. Rooting interest: 51/49.

You're missing it, any player including Federer will try to lock Delpo on his BH side. Fed even today didn't mind staying on BH side, he only changed tactics after he was outgunned at topspin vs topspin exchanges, he basically almost quit BH topspin and went slicing.

At least either one will win this by beating a top 10 player. Imagine winning a high tier title (multiple times) without playing a top 10 player.

It's already great but it would be perfect if Federer gathered enough points to be 100% sure to hold on to the no 1 ranking until the grass season which means he would have to gain 750 points from tomorrow + Miami. So if he wins tomorrow he needs a SF in Miami but if he loses he would have to win Miami.

Coric win was biggest in that regard. Recouping over 20 percent of your points up for defense in the entire tournament in one match aint too shabby

Now he can recoup the last 40 percent in one tomorrow
