You're missing it, any player including Federer will try to lock Delpo on his BH side. Fed even today didn't mind staying on BH side, he only changed tactics after he was outgunned at topspin vs topspin exchanges, he basically almost quit BH topspin and went slicing.
Federer can and will use dumb tactics when he feels like it.

It's how he lost to Del Potro the last time.

This court' so damn slow. I think fed has the edge on this court against delpo but he might be out of gas.

I would back Fed to outlast DelPo no problem if it comes to that, he's better equipped to deal with the grind. But ideally he won't get into too many baseline exchanges for the simple fear of getting out-hit.

Delpo has a real shot here for his first 1000 title.

The court is perfect for him. It’s slow enough that he can catch up to balls he would not on faster courts and he has the power to hit through it. This is slower than the grindy surface at the USO and Fed had a hard time moving Delpo around since the surface was slow. In addiron, the court is slow enough that Delpo can turn some of those BHs into FHs. Lastly, his BH has looked as good as it has since the operations as it's not ceding ground with poor depth this tournament.

Should be a three set affair.

Yet all but one Delpo's wins against Fed came in indoor conditions.

I do feel like Fed is going to try to play (or need to play) with too little margin tomorrow. And not in a good way.

Roger is still the favourite, as he is in practically every match he plays, but Delpo could easily take this one.

DelPo in three sets. He’s never won a masters title right? Would be nice to see him get a big win like this.
I second this and actually do expect Delpo to pull through in 3. Having said that:
Big reason why a part of me is still leaning toward rooting for Federer is that I do have that YE#1 in mind. Securing every last point in IW could prove to be a massive boon in said race.

If Federer wasn't defending the points I'd likely be 70-30 in rooting for Del Potro to get his first M1000.

But I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't like to see Fed end YE#1 one more time.
good points too. Pre-match: I'm 60-40 for Delpo. During the match: Knowing myself, I cannot actively root against Fed during a match. I can be perfectly fine with the result (QF FO 2016 is a case in point), but I don't recall ever outright rooting for his opponent during a match.

I too am expecting a 3-set affair, but I do regard Delpo as a tougher opponent for Fed on faster surfaces. We'll see which Fed turns up tmr. Should be a cracker.

Cool achievement. :)
Re: your reply to in the other thread:
I partly meant with him choking those finals due to not pacing himself better (he could have won Paris last year if he hadn't peaked for Stockholm and Basel beforehand). Letting Nadal vulture IW for the 3rd time. :( And Novak was drunk in Shanghai.

True regarding last year's Paris.
But don't see what he could've done in IW 13, he had to deal with Murray and Djoko in the Qf and SF, while Nadal strolled through an injured Federer and TweetyBird not playing well.

Shanghai 13, well that drunk game from djoko was in the 2nd set and delpo took that set.

I'd just say he's been unlucky not to win a Masters with 3 hard fought Masters finals while plenty of lesser players have.

Anyways , the final we all wanted and deserved.

Rooting for Fed, but would be good to see Delpo win his 1st Masters title as well.

Tbh Murray sucks in IW, but Nadal was very lucky indeed...

Since 2011, Federer, when fully healthy has only lost to Djokovic in IW, and all times in the final set.

Del Potro playing his fourth Master's final, against the only member of big four he has not played in a masters final. He has lost to all three members of Federer's big four family in his previous attempts.

Federer trying for the first time to successfully defend the AO-IW double. Federer also attempting to be first man since Djokovic in 2011 to walk out of IW undefeated for the year.

Federer got a couple of extra weeks at Number 1. Enough for me. Hopefully still has enough in the tank to feast on Miami Crapola Competion.

Delpo winning his 1st MS1000 title would be nice. Should have won one of his last three MS1000 finals. Had Murray, Nadal and Djokovic on the ropes.

Rooting 60 Delpo :40 Federer

An even six years as top dog would be a treat. The honor’s been on offer for < 45 years. And Fed’s only been in the mix for 21 of those. ;)

Del Potro so richly deserves a MS title. For Fed it would just be another wank.

And Henman so richly deserved a Wimbledon title, but for Pete it was just another wank. Ferrer deserved a FO title but lost to Rafa and that was just another wank for Nadal. Lendl deserved many more titles, but for Boris, Edberg or Mac it was just another wank.

We can play this game all day long. Del Potro is 29 years old and should effortlessly beat any 36 year old who ever wielded a racket. Especially when Del Po spent one hour on court against a pile of garbage and Roger spent 2:15 against a GOATING Croatian. But will Del Po best Fed tomorrow? Or will it be another Fed effortless stroke job? I say the latter. :p

Good to see you back, @YellowFedBetter!

Well I’m not back for real yet. It’ll still be a while. I’ve watched maybe 10 minutes of this event. I’ve had a private chat going with 20 others the last two months to get away from the post AO Fedapocalyse on here. You don’t want to know what we’ve discussed on there..

And thank you for finally remembering my existence again.

@BeatlesFan Btw passing along a message from Ghosy she says she hopes a real sexy man like Delpo wins and not prima Donna Fed.

I can finally have a good night's sleep knowing this but will toss and turn over the errant assumption that Del Po is "sexy." Tell Ghost this is sexy:

You're right. Unless it's tennis, I have zero interest to discuss else anything here. But glad to see you back anyway!
No Problem. I’m not gonnna lie I was kinda mad at you for not responding to anything from me for two months but life’s too short to get wound up about it too much.

Actually there was tennis discussion, just not the kind I can get away with on here.

He’s decent enough looking but I will never pull for his likes. His clown act belongs somewhere in the quadrant of the inferno.

Henman didn't reach a Wimbledon final. Hardly what one would call richly deserving a Wimbledon title. Ferrer did reach one FO final, but lost easily to Rafa.

Delpo has reached 4 Masters finals, the 3 of them before this hard-fought ones and went to 3 sets. (this with 2 of them with circumstances being physically against him ...

Montreal 09 -- won Washington, had a tough 3-setter vs Roddick in the semi
IW 13 -- had 2 tough 3 setters vs Murray/DJoko and Nadal had 2 easy matches in QF/SF --- injured fed and berdych not playing well.

pretty different cases.

The main reason tomorrow is exciting is because Federer isn't at his best

Because of the wind. The wind is forecast to be 6 MPH tomorrow which is negligible. In normal IW weather conditions, Fed beats Coric in straights, though the kid played out of his mind today. 7-6, 7-5 for Roger in non-windy conditions and not starting at 11:00 am. Fed usually doesn't wake up until that time, as he's admitted countless times. More Ellison mind games (truly), putting him on court at such a time. Last time was 2006 that Roger played that early.

Anyways I’m not sure how much I’ll actually watch tommorow, being that this match is coinciding with Texas A&M-UNC. And Bay Hill.. and Fontana...

Can Federer take a set against Delpo? Delpo is fresh and Federer tired.
I don't think that Delpo is fresher than Roger. It's true that he had much easier SF, but, prior to today's match, he played two grueling three setters and Delpo is someone with a history of being gassed in the later stages of a tournament if the previous rounds were physically demanding.
Actually, I think that Roger is the favorit if they split the first two sets.

How many posts before you make one that’s not bitter and salty about Federer or his fans?
I won’t even be here I’m just making my requisite 10 posts every two weeks here.

I only have any interest in this at all because of Del Potro. My passion for tennis is at an all time low and I’ve hardly even thought about it since the AO. The flame has burnt out.

Probably gonna watch the UNC game more tommorow anyways.

Yes an awful individual. Insults other players and like the little 3 cheats with time wasting between points.
Only thing I’ll say to this is read what Fed himself says about Delpo.

I’m out. If Delpo wins I’ll insult people if not I’ll just continue to stay away and enjoy the private chat. I’ll make my full return at an indeterminate date.

To what lengths will he go? Mean that in sincerity. Because your theory hadn’t crossed my mind.

"It was early today," Federer said after the match. "I feel like I just woke up."

"You have to force yourself to go to bed early, because you know you're trying everything just to be really ready for an 11:00 start. I woke up early this morning, got out, practiced and tried to get a sweat going. It's just different, and different is good sometimes.
