Make that down a set. Who is Maria Sakkhari?
Greek player. Only one of two WTA players coached by a former male slam champ (Thomas Johannson). The other WTA player coached by a male slam champ? Her opponent, Coco Vandeweghe who’s coached by Pat Cash.

Sakkari has had good slam results making the 3R at the Aus Open, Wimbledon and US Open last year as well as the Wuhan SF so it’s nice to see her transforming that into tour events.

Coco just went bananas with the innocent racquet - racquet that poor mortals like me needs to fork off over $200.

She really does have reasons to be frustrated. Oh well, better girl won.

Good thing Halep found a way to win today, bc top half is now dangerously decimated.

Just look at the top half 4R compared to the bottom half 3R. Insane.

Top half 4R:
#1 Halep v Wang
Vondroušová v Martić
Vickery/Osaka v Sakkari
Anismova v #5 Pliskova

Bottom half 3R:
#8 Venus v Serena
#21 Sevastova v #12 Goerges
Collins v Zhuk
#27 Suárez Navarro v #4 Svitolina
#7 Garcia v #26 Gavrilova
#24 Vesnina v #10 Kerber
#13 Sloane v #20 Kasatkina
Sasnovich v #2 Wozniacki

The difference is striking. And that’s just 3R. There’s going to be some blockbuster 4R in that bottom half with possibly Sloane v Woz, Garcia/Dasha v Vesnina/Kerber, Venus/Serena v Goerges!!! The best the top half has is... well none of them to be honest.

Yup. And imagine if those two fly out....again, I wish Serena was in this half! Or Venus.

We could well have a totally random finalist.

Halep looked down and out against Dolehide and Pliskova dropped a set to Zhang (who admittedly is dangerous). Having a random finalist from that top half is not what I would. Hope Pliskova can pull through.

I didn't even know Kuznetsova was in the tournament.

But you clearly don’t even want one of them as a finalist either.

Would you rather see a career singles retread like Vesnina win, or a youngster with a ton of promise? None of the youngsters probably will, but I’d rather see them than a two-week career like last year.

And I actually really like Elena.

Great match between Osaka and Vickery. Both hitting nicely and lots of winners. Great rallies. Osaka’s power is mind blowing. Do you guys think her average ground stroke speed is higher than most of the guys on the ATP tour?

These two are talented, I like them both but I do wish they would both be more thoughtful on court. Ultimately in slams you have to rely on yourself.

Wish they would stop this occ. You put players into slams without it, they are set adrift and don't know they have to sail the boat by themselves.

Vickey can't quite keep up physically here.

That's one way to look at it but I see it more exciting! Young stars start building up result.
Many blockbuster is proven to be let down anyway.

Osaka possesses this heavy top spin kick forehand in her rally ball that even somebody as tall as Sharapova had difficulty with. I hadn't seen this shot from her 2 years ago.
