Everytime I hear some TTW expert in future talk about Zverev as a talentlesa pretender, and Shapo as a true prince of tennis, I'll refer them back to this match. The keyboard tennis professionals have made a rod for their own backs on this one, sad.

HURR GOTTA LOOK PURTY WHEN I PLAY

We all better start liking Zverev soon cause he is here to stay
That’s like telling someone with a disease “hey the disease is never going away so you might as well love it!”

Okay, maybe that’s a bit of a extreme analogy but you get the point..

Denis never seemed in the match really. He was good for 4 games, and then it's like something clicked off. To be fair, Zverev served very well, but there's no reason Denis couldn't have returned better. But, everything was off-serve, shots, all of it. In any case, I am so proud of what he accomplished in Madrid this week. A fabulous tournament for him. Rome and Paris will be tough, but then thankfully it's grass and hard-courts to the end of the year. I really want to see him do well at Wimbledon, in Toronto, and New York. All else is a bonus.

Before Madrid the lad had lost 7 straight clay matches in a row*, a stretch going back to 2016, including several challenger tournaments, so how the match played out shouldn't really come as a surprise.

He had an impressive week, certainly made me reevaluate his capacity on this surface, but I do think many got a bit carried away based on a mere week's worth of matches.

* edit: missed his two Davis Cup matches this year on clay. So it's 8 of his last 9 clay matches. He defeated clay legend Viktor Galovic.

Shaps two years younger, i believe he will get there, and (yes!) have a greater career then Zverev.

The ROS needs work but i like his mindset. He would probably do better returning from camp Nadal at this point, but thats not his style.

He’s got a very bright future, the talent is all there he just needs to get a tennis brain..

Zverev obviously has plenty of talent, it's hard for his haters to admit it :p

Shapo may well catch him in the future but for now he isn't consistent enough. For him reaching a clay court semi is a great result.

Zverev should be a persistent top 5 player for the next 10 years

I can't get over how jealous the guys are of super handsome future #1  ;)
Giraffe is amazing. Love him to bits :)
And another master final to his resume!!! Should be a smashing one against inspired zebra!!
Shap is still a teen. Leave him some time. He'll be awesome too except he'll never have that lethal Z serve of course

Top 5??? Are you KIDDING??? He's already top 3!!! Top 5 would mean regression. No way. He'll be a top 1 period :)

Lol they’re calling it a bad match up already

I actually agree with them and thought so since their first meeting (and every other just confirmed it). Denis has more problems with consistent, stable players than with flashy shotmakers. Zverev is exactly that. Moreover, unlike many others consistent baseliners he also has great serve which Shapo has big problem to break with his lacking return.

Even well playing Shapo (like bigger part of first set) has great trabbles with breaking Z's serve and has to hold his own every time. Against such a consistent baseliner like Zverev this is big task.

Ofc he'll be number one at some point but i'm not expecting him to have a 257 week stint there :p goodness knows how TW would cope if he did.

It is a bad match up now. No telling how it changes in future though.

I don't see it as a bad match up right now, more a case of Shapos game being too much of a rough diamond atm. And clay isn't Shapos surface.

2 matches isn't a big enough sample.

But as a tennis fan, you don't find it exciting to see a 21-year old play such consistent tennis? The last time we've seen that was the last of the Big-4.
I’ll give him credit where credit is due, he’s by far the best of the next gen thus far, not really saying much since next gen is hilariously awful but still credit where it’s due.

His tennis is just boring to me, I don’t like his attitude or demeanour, he makes young Djokovic look humble.

+1.
Although it may not take him that long to become #1. It depends on how much time it will take him to handle slams better.

I'd like Zverev a lot more if he didn't have that push forehand. Surprised it doesn't get exposed more often.

Good run for Shapo. All experience and a lot to improove. He was a bit lost today. If he had a game plan, it crushed after 5 games.
ROS is a matter of positioning as well. On clay, or you step in and take the ball on the rise (as Fed does), or go back and moonball it to begin the point with a decent defend. He was standing a meter behind the line and the ball was always oh his shoulder height.
