It's sick that Rafa isn't playing. I really think he'd be the favorite to finally win this event.

Very interested to see how Federer plays. In my view, some age showed in Indian Wells toward the end. This has typically been a tough event for him(relative to his other results) and I think his performance will be very revealing as to his form going forward.

I kinda like Del Potro to complete the sunshine double. It goes against all logic to think that as he's a big guy prone to breaking down physically but it's just wide open for him and his confidence has to be sky high. He's always had the ability to win prodigiously but sometimes you just have to break through once and then suddenly the wins start piling up. A slow hard court is great for him because he can hit through it and it allows him to get to returns. I do worry that the humidity will trouble him.

I could totally see someone like Schwartzman reaching the final here.

I like the Miami event, it used to be the most prestigious Masters 1000. I hate that it will be leaving its idyllic location for Dolphins Stadium of all places. Hopefully they can manage to turn that parking lot into an oasis of tennis like Indian Wells has.

Here's what I'd do with the Masters. Move Paris Bercy to Moscow. Russia should have a Masters 1000 event.Create a Masters 1000 grass event in Germany

Delpo:

  • Round of 128: Bye
  • Round of 64: Yuichi Sugita/Robin Haase
  • Round of 32: Kei Nishikori
  • Round of 16: Novak Djokovic
  • Quarter-final: Grigor Dimitrov
  • Semi-final: Marin Cilic

Real question is what is the court speed compared to IW, will it be faster cause IW wasn't the best surface for Fed.

On both sides, lots of well known names on the qualifying! Opelka lost in two sets. Bouchard won her 1st round match however.

Federer:

R128. Bye
R64. García López
R32. Verdasco
R16. Carreño Busta
CF. Anderson
SF. Zverev
Handwringerer's delight. The only silver lining to this cloud of geriatrics plus Zedrot is that perhaps Kokkinakis or Demon might qualify and be the first match. Verdasco and Garcia Lopez vying for R32 honors with Sandgren the young threat. Maybe Manny for PCB R16, but really would rather see Busta in great form as a bit of an unknown with some ground game. Suppose Anderson and his delusions good enough QF, but he's got plenty of youngsters nipping and Tiafoe would be a pleasant surprise (Bendy in there with a rough draw). Kyrgios SF and Delpo final would be just deserts.:D

Tsitsipas vs Medvedev round one. @Meles
That's the one section I really don't like as the winner plays Zverev, but some good matches as we're talking about some future rivalries here. I'd much rather see the usual geriatric pigeons get these players.;)

not easy compared to Fed, until you start looking at form

On paper Del Potro's draw has some names but I can't imagine him losing to Nishikori. Djokovic might not be there and even if he is, I don't see him beating Del Potro right now. The first dangerous matchup is Dimitrov. Del Potro owns Cilic.

When does Zverev lose?
Good question:
R2 - owns Medvedev and probably can handle Tsitsi
R3 - Zedrot beat Ferrer in Rotterdam just this year, but never an easy match.
R16 - Kyrgios/Fognini - probably handles Fog easy and beat Kyrgios in Davis Cup, but Nick probably physically suspect; doubtful Kyrgios finds the form
QF - Probably Coric and that would definitely be the end of the road.

Coric looks pretty good to make SF unless he keeps having flashbacks to last set and a half with Fed at IW. The big threat to Coric is Leonardo Mayer of all people who is in great form and 2-0 vs Borna.

Federer virtually has the number one ranking locked up until Wimbledon with this draw...

The only issue I have with Del Potro is his stamina, he has played a lot. Delray Beach, Acapulco, and IW, winning the last two, with three matches going the distance in IW. I am not sure about him physically being able to do another event, we shall see. Federer though ideal draw, with number one pretty much locked away now until Wimbledon at the least.

Eh, not so sure. Spaniards usually love playing in Miami, probably their best HC event. Could be tougher test for Fed than they are on paper. Would love to see Nick get motivated to defend his SF (he played some amazing last year) but I don't really expect it to happen, he just seems to be in too big of a funk right now. Coric is in Fed's half as well, right? Hope he builds upon his IW showing, he seemed ready to take it to the next level potentially.

I wouldn't be that surprised to see a Fed-Delpo final repeat actually, would be quite something.

Well the only in-form top players right now are basically Fed and Delpo. Of course someone else could catch fire at Miami but try predicting who with the current field, it's almost impossible.
