This is even worse.

Delpo kept slowly climbing in the rankings for over a year and always ended up in Novak's section.

Now Delpo is finally ranked high but Novak fell off a cliff and will now constantly be drawn in Delpo's section. :D

Fed has faced Delpo 25 times , many during peak Delpo period. In contrast, Djokovic just 18 times and many during Delpo's recovery mode.

Djok has great chances against tired Delpo here.

Oddly, Delpo's best H2H in the big 4 is against Rafa. He also has a pretty dominant 10-2 over Cilic.

Goffin has a good draw. Let's hope Djoko finds his game. I will watch Jarry. I think the young mas is suited for hard court.
Roger vs. Dasco should be interesting, and I hope Mannarino makes it to R16. I'd love to see a re-game of such a good match of last year I don't remember where of Federer vs. Mannarino.
Paris :)

That we can call an incredible good lineup!

Anyone here going?

If Djoko reaches Del Po, means he is good enough. I really hope we get to see this encounter. Djokovic and big matches is a Must, tennis misses that.

No, it doesn't mean that at all IMO!

LOL at your brashness. Djokovic hasn't been able to beat a chimp in a straitjacket for two years but in your estimation, he will be able to beat a Del Potro who is in his best form ever since all of his surgeries?

The problem is, Del Potro probably won't make it that far because he's just won two tournaments and he probably wants a rest. He'll probably tank before getting to Djokovic. As for Djokovic, you need to worry about whether or not Djokovic can beat John Doe these days and not Del Potro!

I miss Stan The Swiss Lion :(
Hope he is not finnish...

Hard to predict. IW was slowed down 2.7 points from last year, and was only 3.3 points faster than Rome (!). If this trend continues in Miami, it opens up for a lot of those consistent players like Schwartzman, RBA, PCB, Coric, Chung etc.

The world #1 looked a little like Montreal Fred in IW; rusty, old, grumpy.

RBA did well in Miami last year. Took Fed to two TBs and his best results are Shanghai final and Dubai title.
IW Fed was better than Montreal Fed. I compared him to YEC in another thread but he played relatively better against Delpo than Goffin.

That's why I said IF he gets to del po. And if you read earlier what I wrote I underlined the importance of the first rounds for him.

Having faith in your favourite player isn't a crime.

Not to mention that it isn't true Novak couldn't beat anyone for two years, he had a few stand-out perofrmances last year (a few of them against Delpo actually and there was that drubbing against Thiem right after he beat Nadal in Rome) despite the fact that his season overall was a mess.

Despite his current situation people will still expect great things from Novak until the day he hangs up his racquet for good, it goes with the territory of being one of the best players in the history of the game.

Maybe it's too early after the procedure he had, maybe he's done for good but we all know how quickly things can change in tennis. Wouldn't take that much for Novak to get his momentum going again as long as he's reasonably healthy and his head is in the game.

It's not that odd, he can be a very tough match-up for Nadal when he's healthy/fresh.

It's just that most of his wins over him aren't memorable because Nadal is nowhere near as good as Fed in staying in the match when he's getting overpowered (which is Delpo's game) so goldfish memory TTW/media experts forget about them.

Federer had a heck of a draw at Miami last year, Del Potro, Berdych, Kyrgios and then Nadal

RBA wasn't easy either, some of that was Fed having a slightly off day but he can be a tricky opponent for top players when they're not at their best, doesn't give away much. Of course Berdman and Kyrgios were genuine thrillers with Fed barely scraping through.

Overall, definitely one of the most impressive Fed's title runs. To run the gauntlet like that and then still deliver a great final performance against a fresh as daisy Nadal who went on to slaughter everyone on clay.

Thinking back, tennis didn't look in such a bad shape in that AO-IW-Miami period. It's only after that the tour started literally falling apart.

this could be me making assumptions since I don't particularly follow him that closely but he seems like the type to play through pain...or his heart tells him he is ready when perhaps his body is not totally there. I mean the guy/his team said he was carrying around an injury for 2 years and iirc I think at the time he went through the therapy route. I think he said he came back too early a few times, at AO and then again at IW. I think for him it is a chronic issue so it was always be there, even more so being 30+. I just hope if he's back, he is as fit as can be. I hope I made sense.

didn't berdych have mps in Miami? actually thinking back on it, Federer scraped through a few close matches. I guess at the end of the day winning is all that is remembered, but his level was definitely up and down a bit last year, minus Wimbledon and I think IW.

I think nearly ever player plays through pain (pro sports are just grueling) most of the time, it's all about if you can mitigate it enough so you can still compete. Definitely it gets harder dealing with injures past 30, the body is older, more beat-up and just recover as well.

It's a tricky thing to decide whether to rest-up or have a procedure or to continue playing. Novak might have come back too soon but then again he has barely played for the last almost 10 months now, nothing can substitute actual match play. I read a recent interview with Becker where he said that if Novak's comeback/recovery period is as long as his absence that it might be the end of his career (I'm paraphrasing).

The way Fed managed to come back in 2017 and Nadal did a few times in his career is not normal, by any standards. They are very much the exception to the rule. It's not nearly as easy for other players to take extended time off tour and then just continue where they left off, it doesn't work for them that way.

Fed had two genuinely great tournaments from start to finish last year, IW and Wimbledon. Those were prime level Fed performances despite his age.

The rest was flashes of brilliance mixed with patchy play and plenty of guts. Fed's ability to win "ugly" has always been vastly underrated, it still is even today.

I'm not even sure about Wimbledon. His baseline play wasn't very good at all vs Berdych. Cilic had a meltdown in the final so its hard to gauge his level there.

true and tbqh, I will say the one noticeable thing last year (and contrary to what quite a few people think fed's ability to be clutch is underrated) was his ability to be clutch in deciding moments. I don't if, during the 1st half of the year, he was still playing without pressure or w/e but he had moments where it could have gone another way.

true....yeah I'm not judging novak either way...but will be interesting to see his level in Miami. I mean like you said, a player of his caliber has the tools to come back or atleast have another decent run.
I'm sure there are some truths to w/e becker says, but it is so hard not to take him seriously for me anyways.

I think only at AO he was playing without pressure (or with less pressure), the moment he won a slam again I'd say heavy expectations were back. He was very clutch in Miami and Wimbledon, both tournaments he was favoured to win.

Becker may be a clown when it comes to a lot of things but I do think he's an excellent coach and that he genuinely cares for Novak, I don't detect bitterness in his statements about Novak since they parted ways.

I get that Novak needed a change but not sure letting Becker go was the right move. Of course whenever a player is struggling for a prolonged period their first move usually is to sack the coach so it wasn't that unexpected.

Having faith is one thing but being blind to the obvious is another. Djokovic has to walk before he can run again. Saying he'll beat a zoned in Del Potro "at this time" is being overly ambitious and unrealistic IMO.

Not to mention that it isn't true Novak couldn't beat anyone for two years, he had a few stand-out perofrmances last year (a few of them against Delpo actually and there was that drubbing against Thiem right after he beat Nadal in Rome) despite the fact that his season overall was a mess.

Djokovic has done nothing noteworthy in two years and he's had trouble beating nobodies. I'm not saying he won't have another good run in the future, but for the last two years, he's been basically a no-show.

Despite his current situation people will still expect great things from Novak until the day he hangs up his racquet for good, it goes with the territory of being one of the best players in the history of the game.

As I said above, expecting great things from him again is fine but looking at his current form after not winning anything of note for two years and saying he's ready to beat Del Potro is a little fanciful IMO.

Maybe it's too early after the procedure he had, maybe he's done for good but we all know how quickly things can change in tennis. Wouldn't take that much for Novak to get his momentum going again as long as he's reasonably healthy and his head is in the game

I agree.

How can the overwhelming majority of people in this poll be confident that Fed is going to win Miami, after what just happened at IW?

What does one thing have to do with the other? Different tournament, different draw and before the loss to Del Potro, Federer had an unbeaten run in 2018 didn't he? He's a great champion and great champions rebound quickly. Remember, Fed was inches away from the IW trophy.

Personally, I think Federer should skip Miami, sit it out until the grass season and then focus solely on Wimbledon and the USO. Winning slams is all that matters at this stage of his career IMO.

Yea. But honestly he had match point on his serve. Sometimes things don't go your way. He came about as close to winning as you could without winning. I for one hope someone under 25 steps up but I aint hopeful.
True, but there is also loss of momentum. Up to this loss he was charmed this year. No matter what happened, he won. That run has now been broken, and with it maybe the confidence.

One thing I've never understood: Majors all have 7 rounds. Of course there can be W/Os. Players retire. But the standard is 128 players in the main draw.

Why is the draw not standardized for M1000s? For instance, why is Shanghai an M1000 but the top players only play 5 rounds?

And why is there so little time between IW and Miami?

How can the overwhelming majority of people in this poll be confident that Fed is going to win Miami, after what just happened at IW?

The field has far too few in-form players right now, if you have to pick a single player to win it would likely be Fed given that Delpo has played more tennis lately and isn't known for his stamina.

Would I favour Fed over the field, ie. is he an odds-on favourite for the title? I'd lean towards no.

In short, if not Fed then who else? It's a hard question to anwer right now, we're in a somewhat chaotic and unpredictable period.
