Zverev was at the right place at the right time. You can't blame someone for being injured repeatedly. I'm glad we will find out tomorrow how they match up against each other.

Twice? To win both his Masters 1000s by age 20? Nope. He has potential. How many 20 year olds win a couple of Masters 1000s? If he doesn't make the final of MC, he'll surely make more big finals in the future. A lot more than Kei will ever make. I like Kei's game but I don't have the patience for his injuries every other week. This has been going on his entire career. It won't change now. Raonic and Kyrgios are in that same boat, sadly. Injured every other freakin' week.

I'm rooting for Zverev to make the final. The other three we've seen enough of what they can(or should I say can't) do in finals vs Big Four. At least Zverev is only 21 and has time even if Nadal mauls him on Sunday.

Glad to see Zverev won..

So Rafa can crush him into oblivion.
Let it go. There is nothing humiliating about getting crushed by clay king.
Arrogance is good to some degree. You can't really be successful without some degree of it. He's not that bad, IMO. It doesn't bother me. It's his game that can bore me to tears. He needs to improve his fh and net game and it will be better to watch him, IMO.

He's the future of the sport. I'm pretty sure he'll win a couple of slams. I mean, somebody has to, right?
Eventually, Federer/Nadal/Djokovic will be gone.
Z is awesome. He’s a nice guy. Works hard. Tries hard. No real weak surface, just a weak format atm. Will improve with increasing strength and endurance. Not ready to beat Rafa. So what? Still, clay master title under his belt at such a young age. RESPECT.
Future #1 imo as long as no freak injury. So why all the Z bashing on this board? Because, oh I almost forgot... HE IS FRIGGING GOOD-LOOKING. Guys here can’t take it. Bunch of sissies the whole lot. Turns their brains to darn mush. Like claiming that Gasquet is a better clay court player than Z. Because Nice > Rome. RIGHT? Right??????? How does that work for them?
Get lost, sore haters :p
Happy Bday Sascha :)

Twice in one day I’ve agreed with you! That’s not right. :D

LOL. Tell us how you really feel. :p

I'd rather see Zverev in the final. Fresh blood. How much more can we take seeing guys like Dimitrov, Zverev, Nishikori mug it up vs the Big Four in finals? At least if Zverev mugs it up(which he probably will),
he is only 21 and has time on his side. As far as Zverev being arrogant, I don't find him so bad at all and I think he has to have that in him to some degree in order to succeed.

Z could be tired tomorrow. I think Rafa has it in the bag vs either guy anyway. . I find Z rather mature for his age. He has a temper but I’ve seen a lot worse and he’s quite the class act post match.

Because he's the younger generation and he has a shot at a better tennis career than Kei will ever have. I'm sick and tired of seeing Kei injured every other week, withdrawing from tournaments, retiring from matches, etc. We've seen what Kei can do. Next. The younger players need to make some kind of mark.
How is Kei better than Zverev if Zverev is the one with two Masters 1000s and Kei has zip?
Kei has a slam semi and a final for now. Zverev has zilch.

We already know how they match up against each other. Zverev tore Kei a new one last year in Washington.

Look he’s really good at tennis and might become a future #1, but he’s also got a pretty boring game and a disgusting diva attitude which puts lots of fans off. That’s it. I think many people would rather see a more interesting player like Shapo at the top.
And yeah he’s good looking but he’s also very aware of that fact in an annoying way.

Boring??? Nope. And it’s only gonna get better ;)
I like Shapo too. Z and S are my 2 fav next gen. Hey, it takes 2 to make an awesome match! :)
(ETA: I don’t find Z has a “playboy” attitude at all. That was Safin :D
Z likes dogs and kids. Still a bit childlike, not macho)

Rafa won MC in 2010 losing just 7 games from start to finish. That couldn't have taken very long.

True, but Nadal in 2010 was just incredible.

But I've just looked at match times in Monte Carlo last year, and he beat Zverev and Ramos pretty quickly then too. So maybe I shouldn't read anything into this, but I do think it's good news for Rafa fans in any case.

Nadal also won his first slam by the time he was 19.

Z is 21 and still hasn’t even made a slam QF.

Levels.
Nadal was exceptional in that though. And he's one of the greatest players of all time. Without argument the greatest player on clay ever by some distance.

Don't think anyone seriously suggests Zverev is or will be in the same league.

Yeah, he's a goddamn nerd. But I think you (and people outside this forum) are giving too much credit to his looks. He's not handsome, it's just that his looks are a bit more decent than the current average tennis player, and that makes people get confused and see him as some sort of playboy instead of paying attention to how awkward he can be.

Wow, what a demolition job Rafa did on poor Dominic! Who saw that coming?? Who now thinks Thiem can pose any sort of challenge to Rafa anywhere on clay this year???

Nishikori looks to be getting back to top form making his 1st Masters semi-final since 2016 Toronto and beating a top 3 player for the 1st time since the 2016 WTF (beating Wawrinka in the RR). Just 2 months ago he was playing Challenger events!!

Of course, the big question, as always with Kei, is whether his fitness will hold up??

Pretty much everyone. :D

I struggle to see how somebody on tour can seriously pressure Nadal right now, he's head and shoulders (throw in the torso as well) above everyone on the dirt. It was always the case, but there were players that could threaten. Not so much these days IMO....

It will take an monumental effort to get him in one of these warm up tournaments I'm thinking, unless he just throw in a random shocker, but I just can't see that happening....

Not sure I like the idea of him testing out his post-operative hip on the claycourts of RG without any clay preparation beforehand and on a surface that is supposedly the hardest to play on when recuperating from a serious injury! Wonder why he has changed his mind on this??? o_O
He wants to one up Fed by beating Nadal at RG. ;)

In all seriousness, I have no idea and I’d rather he wait until June but we’ll see what happens.

Gasquet is also more handsome & masculine.

I don't get the question.
You said that just because both Nishikori and Zverev are pretty much equal because they haven't won slams, despite Nishikori doing better in them, which I disagreed with. So if what you said is true, Nalbandian/Davydenko are equal with Schwartsman because neither has won slams.

Kei has a slam semi and a final for now. Zverev has zilch.

But Zverev actually has two Masters 1000 titles. Kei is eight years older than Zverev and has toiled around on tour for how many years and basically has jack sh*t. Zverev needs to do better at the slams for sure but usually, players who win Masters 1000s in their teens/early 20s go on to win slams.

I know one who won a handful.

Djokovic and Murray were the last younger players to win Masters 1000s while in their teens/early 20s. That was over a decade ago! Eventually, some younger player from the Lost Gen or Next Gen had to do it, and Zverev is the one who did it. Talk is cheap.

I agree with the awkwardness. Not the “smooth operator” type. That doesn’t change the fact that he’s extremely photogenic and pleasing to the eye...

I was saying that it's all about the wins, and though neither has a slam win, Zverev has 2 wins at the Masters. That puts Zverev ahead in my book, more so considering Nishikori has had many more years to build his resume. I think Kei's final and semifinal results would play more of a factor if he actually won one of the big tournaments.

He probably hasn't. He's probably just thrown in an entry (or his agent has on his behalf) in the unlikely event he's jumping out of his skin by the time the FO starts.

Did everybody else really expect just 2 measly games from the guy who just beat (an admittedly sub-par) Djokovic and who is currently reckoned to be the 2nd best player on clay?? No serious threat of a developing rivalry there then!!

Save us, Edmund!

Have you listened to the commies who now repeatedly refer to Thiem as the 2nd best clay court player? This is what annoys me about the way these unsubstantiated accolades are bandied around with no regard to the evidence. The sport deserves better.

He probably is the 2nd best player on clay currently but there’s a HUGE gap between the 1st and 2nd best.

C'mon, no way is Thiem better than Djokovic on clay any time, nor Murray, nor Stan. It's not just about who has beaten Rafa in the last year; it should be much more than that. I'd love to hear the case for Thiem.

Overall, I’d say Djokovic, Stan, and Fed are all better on clay than Thiem.

Djokovic is a shadow of his former self and it will take time for him to recover.
Stan looks like he’s done.
Fed is skipping clay because he’s old and needs to keep his fitness up for Wimbledon.

So, yes Thiem will unfortunately be Rafa’s biggest “obstacle” this year.
