2018 New York Open - ATP 250

i'd take nishikori over chung as the representative of asian tennis any day of the week

nishi has had so many entertaining and close matches against the top 4 throughout the years it just sucks not having him at his best
Why ? because Chung will win 3-4 majors and Kei may not even win 1 major ?

Yup, I hope he makes it back to the top ten!
But...representative of Asian Tennis.....
Hmmm, we are not the authority on this. I do know a guy who has Dave Chapelle's cell number. Gotta get chappelle to do another racial draft. It is time.

I think, for Asian tennis, it is either Na Li or Li Na.
In men's it comes down to
Michael Chang, Chung, NishiSan, shuzo matsuoka, leandro Paes, and whichever of the legendary Amritraj brothers played a role in the 007 film, 0ctopussy. I am for NishiSan. Or Mansour Bahrami. Dude is hilarious.

Asia needs a good one hander. Been too long. I nominate Paradorn Srichaphan, because his name reminds me of Sriracha. He will win if they show a clip of his backhand. And his wife? Natalie, iirc.

Well, this is kind of a Mt. rushmore of Asian Tennis. Minus Amritraj, Bahrami, Krishnan, Matsuoka, and Shimizu.

No broadcast domestically that I can find; but might be shown in betting sites streaming! That another "miss" for Tennis Channel to not cover something that takes place in NYC; in their backyard! LOL! I know TC located in L.A. but it still an USTA event! I did not find it on Tennis TV either but it should be on it since it is an ATP event channel.

I don't have Tennis Channel Plus so I don't know if it does or not? I use to have it when it had both tours but I drop it now since it only has only the mens! I could check but I cannot get it so maybe you can since it worth your time if you have TCP!

Tennis Channel is covering it. Coverage starts at 1:30 est tomorrow.

Wow. An amazing set of matches start things off Monday:
Bjorn Fratangelo VS Alexander Bublik - Bublik eligible for Milan this year and has played out of his mind in the past (qualifier match so may be hard to catch)
Jared Donaldson VS Ivo Karlovic - NextGen taking on the giant
Ryan Harrison VS Donald Young - Harrison now a respectable player and the Donald returns to NY:eek:
Frances Tiafoe VS (WC) Sebastian Korda -- Mighty Foe vs Sebastian 2017 Junior Auz Champ and son of Korda (1997 Auz Open champ)

Looking forward to the venue. Have got a feeling its going to be really big and really empty.:(

That nice but I bet it in TC typical style too; all abridged to fit into their straight block time constraints. That means the player entrances, coin toss, warmups, rest periods and any medical time outs and many times after match court interviews are deleted from the coverage and if there is time left; the big mouth commentators and analyst will fill them.

Haven't watched much tennis since the AO, looking forward to the first rounds. First two matches on stadium court are qualifying matches...

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN NEW YORK

(1) Tour Returns to Long Island:
This is the first ATP World Tour tournament on Long Island since 2004 when action took place in August one week before the US Open. This year’s tournament is being played at the NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Coliseum. It is the first of 10 tournaments in the U.S. and the only U.S. indoor event on the ATP World Tour.

(2) Anderson Leads Field: This is the fifth time Kevin Anderson is the No. 1 seed in an ATP World Tour tournament. He is trying to win his first ATP title as the top seed. He opened the season with a runner-up at Pune (l. to Simon) and followed with a 1R at the Aust. Open (l. to Edmund in five sets).

(3) Americans Seeded: Four of the top eight seeds are Americans, led by No. 2 Sam Querrey, No. 3 John Isner, No. 6 Ryan Harrison and No. 7 Steve Johnson. Last year each player won at least one title and the foursome accounted for six of the nine titles won by Americans. Overall there are 10 Americans in the main draw, not including possible qualifiers.

(4) Nishikori Returns: No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori returns to the ATP World Tour for the first time since losing in his opening match on Aug. 9 to Gael Monfils in Montreal. The Japanese star has been sidelined with a right wrist injury. He came back last month at the Newport Beach, CA Challenger and lost in the 1R. Last Sunday he won the title at the Dallas Challenger.

(5) Harrison Quick Starter: Harrison comes in with a 6-2 record this season after reaching the final in Brisbane (l. to Kyrgios) and the 3R at the Australian Open (l. to Cilic). A year ago Harrison won his maiden ATP singles title in Memphis and finished in the Top 50 for the first time at No. 47.

(6) Youthful Wild Cards: The American trio of Sebastian Korda (17), Noah Rubin (21) and Mackenzie McDonald (22) are the wild cards in the draw. All three have played well in the early part of the season. Korda won the Australian Open boys’ junior title and is now the No. 1 junior in the world, Rubin captured the New Caledonia Challenger in the opening week of the season and McDonald was runner-up at the Dallas Challenger last week.

(7) Youth is Served: The two youngest players in the draw: Korda (17) and Frances Tiafoe (20), meet in the 1R. Korda is making his ATP World Tour debut.

(8) Like Father, Like Son: Korda captured the Australian Open boys’ crown 20 years after his father Petr claimed his biggest career title Down Under in Melbourne. Petr Korda also won the Hamlet Cup in Long Island in 1992 for one of his 10 career singles titles.

(9) From Clay to Hard: Victor Estrella Burgos and Ivo Karlovic both lost in the 2R this past week on clay in Quito. They are the two oldest players in the draw at 37 and 38, respectively.

(10) Doubles Draw: The top seeds are Bob and Mike Bryan, who have combined to win a record 114 doubles titles. No. 2 are Max Mirnyi and Philipp Oswald, No. 3 are Nicholas Monroe and John-Patrick Smith, and No. 4 are Robert Lindstedt and Franko Skugor.

^hahha nice^
Purple provides good contrast for tennis. Pink doesn't, but it will work at a non-televised event. Unless the baseliners are all in pink apparel again this week. Then they'll boend in with the backcourt.
Wait....
How is that a "culturally ahead" paint scheme?
Just sounds feminine to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Well, I mean masculine.
i mean it sounds like the sofa in the reading room of Womyn and Womyn First. Or a Bravolebrity's pillow shamz.
Well, now it sounds gendrbending. #triggered
I mean it seems so homophobic that is it trying to make up for its homophobia. And that's a micro aggression.
I mean, it soulds like a really nice paint scheme for a safe space. Calming but still edgy. Edgy, yet, non aggressive.
Thanks for your micro-aggression-suggestion.

Ok, onto Frances and Sebastian...
a pair of American sons of immigrant fathers, facing off tonight. Not sure who to root for.
Very different backgrounds. Is either of them trans? Or lgbtqifc?

A few quick questions...
Why are the Bryans playing a challenger?
Appearance fees, of course, in a major market, likely with good sponsorships. So...
Is this the all-time best challenger?
Does the PED policy violation still haunt Petr Korda? Does anyone know the details? Does Sebastian?

Absolutely wonderful tournament threads! Keep up the good work!

Best stuff since former member Love Game used to maintain the "Results, OOPs, etc. sticky thread at the top of PMR. Will you consider doing your magic there? The last update is almost two years old now so be ready for cobwebs!

It seems to me you have to buy a Stadium seat, and then you can go to the GA seats on the other side of the Coliseum for the other court if you want. That's what it says on Ticketmaster.

I wish someone would create a global tennis network that had both WTA and ATP matches, with an archive streaming capabilities database and have no black out after a day after the matches are done with and are shown in 4K and with and without commentary. I play $50 a month for such a channel setup! My time would be free up and can bling watch matches at any time!

Classic Ivo on a couple of those 2nd serves, aggressive forehands from the big man, following it forward and attacking any short ball.

Has the break for 1-0.

30-30, Ivo serving. Jamming body serve from the big man, 40-30. Ace out wide, Ivo holds for 3-1. Jared with more than a decent chance at 15-30, just missing the backhand long, had plenty of open court...

Some big serves make it 4-2. Donaldson needs to find a way to break Karlovic's serve. Or he could take him to a tiebreak. Otherwise, Karlovic will win this in two sets.

Unreal 2nd serve ace from Ivo, filthy angle out wide on deuce side, no chance for Jared.

Another couple quality serves, Ivo holds for 4-2.

Jared quickly up 40-0, finding his first serve consistently now. Those 2nd serve looks in that opening service game were crucial for Ivo.

Another love hold, 3-4.

This is kind of like their last match with Karlovic dictating on serve.

Karlovic had 15-30 on Donaldson's serve, but could not pounce on the opportunity. Donaldson holds, 3-2
