2018 New York Open - ATP 250

I repeat....there is absolutely no one there! If there are more than 10 people I will eat my hat. This is an ATP250?

Almost all Challenger match are sparely attend especially the first few rounds. In the final, you will see 100 to 150 people but this being in Brooklyn, I think it will be close to packed! This is a 250 tournament! Disregard what I said!

The courtside audio is all but non-existent, but looks pretty hostile at the new New York Open between Ryan Harrison and Donald Young.

LOL! Not a word on the ATP site about this incident in their match recap.

Gutsy effort by WC Korda vs Tiafoe. Ran out of gas in the third but he saved a dozen BPs along the way to make Tiafoe work for the 4-6 6-4 6-2 win. He may be the American to end the slam drought, now approaching 15 years.

This draw is so unpredictable. In the first quarter, don't really know what to expect from Anderson... Basilashvilli can be hit and miss. Isner's usually in poor form early-season, but who knows what can happen with his serve. Mannarino probably has the most predictable draw -- but he can still be here and there... Chardy can surprise sometimes. 4th quarter with Querrey -- again, a typical, erratic, big-serving American. You've got Karlovic in there, who could stir things up.
You are in some kind of servebot paradise with this one.:D

This video feed is unwatchable

Twitter says they dont have it hooked up to satellite like they do for all other events

Challenger tour streams are 10x better
Wow this is such a huge flop so far. The arena is huge and has been paired down for this event. Watching Rotterdam right now which is "sold out" for the week and its maybe 20% full right now, but closer to 100% for Zverev v Ferrer.

The highest price for a ticket the first day of the Winston-Salem Open is $25 with reserved seats at $7. NY Open is 7 times the price. The stream quality is the worst ever seen on Tennis TV and needs to be corrected immediately. Is Long Island some kind of backwater?

Donald young: I’m shocked and disappointed, Ryan Harrison, to hear you tell me how you really feel about me as a black tennis player in the middle of our NY match. I thought this was supposed to be an inclusive gentleman’s sport.

Ryan harrisson: The accusations made by Donald Young tonight following our match are absolutely untrue. I’m extremely disappointed that someone would say this in reaction to a lost tennis match. Any video/audio will 100% clear me and I encourage anyone with the available resources to find it.

Harrison in big trouble if it is true

Told that ATP is investigating ...stay tuned. Tennis being tennis, Harrison and Young are a round away from meeting in doubles.

If it is true what young and his gf said
ATP should suspends and fined harrison
Young's girlfriend here doing a bit of pc muckraking "racial controversy with these players and Ryan". Under the heat of competition some ill advised comments pop out of these players all the time and family members, etc. far from neutral observers.

OH Yeah, That makes it okay.

The NY Open courts....
black-courts-3.jpg

Installation of the above court cut into pieces:

Jared Donaldson, who practiced on the courts on Friday, said he was 0-4 on wooden courts in European competitions, but none were black. “It’s cool, it’s unique,” he said. “The ball really stood out against the black. I think it’s good for our sport, not only to have different court surfaces, but also different court colors.”

So unbeknownst to us all indoor hard courts have been essentially painted wood courts all this time?

Man, I wonder how long Ivo can keep playing competitive tennis like this. Employs perfect tactics for someone like himself, and that serve seems forever....

How old is he now, 38? 39?
Tbh, if Ivo doesn't get back into the top 30 (which is still a possibility). He will still be a very formidable stopper into his 40s. In Quito he was hitting into the 130s a lot more often on the clay (found it interesting that he was serving harder there) -- so he's still got the power. And even if his serve does slow down at some point, he's still hitting aces at like 115 mph on second serves.

Damn, anemic crowds. Hope I didn't waste my money. Only consolation is that I got a 20% group code and didn't pay TM fees.

What's going on with the video feed on TC? It looks like they are using 1990's webcams to broadcast the tournament. Makes it even tougher to follow what's going on, on top of those horrible courts.

2 usa young guns center court evening sesh. rubin v McDonald..should have 1 or 2 more fans flocking in to boost crowd to way past 63 fans.

and the mighty nish is last on. prob get loads in for him.

No its called airing your dirty laundry for the whole world to see is bad for business. All you do is alienate and lose fans.
Not good. Agreed. Bad press.
However...now...
We have to figure out what RH said. He invites people to look at the video/audio. Says he will be cleared.
Of what exactly?

As we analyze Young's allegation, it is not necessarily a racial slur. It is about how Ryan feels about Donald as a black player. Or is it how Ryan feels about Donald, as a black player?

DY is reputed to be intense and not always likable, but he will never deserve to be treated poorly because of his race.
Ryan is a hothead and a conservative... so I can see this going awry. Curious to hear what Ryan actually said. He should be held to the highest standard.

If Ryan was not bringing race into this, I look forward to the Bagcheck.....in which Donald Young reveals the Race Card on a lanyard.

Tennis and most tennis crowds are generally cosmopolitan, mostly caucasian, and self selectingly diverse. I would hate for generally inclusive tennis, get lumped in with lal the sports with racial baggage.

I really like Sebi's fluidity and ease of motion. Silky serve. Willing to attack.

The court is laid down tiles and sounds hollow. The players can barely bounce the ball to serve. Second serves are kicking up below chest level.

Players often rely on their backhand as they get older and the foot speed and forehand decline. Johnson has no backhand and he's getting slower, forehand pace isn't quite what it was. He may retire this year. I don't see him grinding it out in Winnetka.

So far this tournament is an utter disaster. Nobody here knows about it, they can't sell tickets/fill up seats, no big names signed up to play.

The NYC owners sphould of promoted it with discount event packages to get it going especially the early rounds and free qualifying rounds along with getting free TC promote air time 3 months ago!

I have missed the whole thing since going to the office/mtgs all day. Just reading in, here, for the news. I will have to check twitter or whatever.

Can you guys fill me in on anything important but not zapworthy?
If not....back on topic.
Will the crowds thicken this weekend?

Many tournaments have sparse crowds on the first few days. But this is ridiculous.... to have more ballkids and linespeople than spectators!

Praying Corporate sponsorships and a full house this weekend will make the event break even. But it does not loook good.

Well there are some negatives...
NY tennis fans love tennis. But most US Open fans are sports fans who like the Open. The core tennis fan is attending this to see good level tennis. Sadly, there are only a handful of these people.
The rest are not there. Why?
1. weekday traffic out to the island,
2. People have work and sküle,
3. Ticket prices seem high for a small tournament,
4. US Open finalists like Ando and Nishikori are not as YOOJ a draw as originally thought.

Could it be that Memphis was a better home for this than NY?
I bet if this was in Manhattan, Westchester, or even Jersey.... it would have done better.
Here's to a decent weekend!
