2018 New York Open - ATP 250

I thought I was watching reruns of 1940s tennis in B&W. I hope this is not a trend. Looks really drab on screen. Hard to get excited seeing any match with this kind of 'color'.

I agree, it's pretty ugly, but Kei is playing better than he has in awhile! His backhand DTL has looked good this match.
Backhand has been good since his return. It's the forehand that looked weak. But it's gradually improving every match. He is still dumping lot of neutral balls from both wings. We will see where he is at when he faces the mighty Donskoy next.

Yea but saw him shaking his wrist during the match,,,, could be sign that his wrist is hurting him Again.........
Serve seems to be improving, but there is still something wrong with his forearm/wrist action. I am not surprised he is hurting. I wonder how his wrist would feel if he had a smoother, better forearm roll.

It'll never happen. Like delPotro with a one handed bh.

@gn spot on. Black and white TV. Laver Cup different?

ATP's fault 100% as they made the court at tournament's behest.

Well the tennis has been excellent this evening from all the players including Kei who is making good progress unlike some.

Am hearing the ATP has found no evidence to support Donald Young’s claim that Ryan Harrison made a racial comment toward him.
@Bartleby :rolleyes:

Escobedo was rocking the forehand in the third set tie-breaker. The fans left in attendance deeply satisfied despite the Donald's absence from the proceedings.

Gotta say the draw at this tournament just not that bad in singles with a lot of in form and solid hard court players.

Scandal in doubles if the Donald and Ebden win tomorrow as Harrison and Mr. Johnson await.

ATP Is Investigating Incident Between Ryan Harrison and Donald Young

By DAVID WALDSTEIN

FEB. 13, 2018
  • The first day of the inaugural New York Open tennis tournament was embroiled in controversy when Donald Young accused Ryan Harrison of making a racially charged comment toward him during their heated match Monday night.

Young, an African-American player, made the claim on his Twitter account shortly after midnight on Tuesday, but did not specify what he heard.

Harrison denied the claim, calling it “completely false.”

Following the match, which Young lost, he wrote, “I’m shocked and disappointed, Ryan Harrison, to hear you tell me how you really feel about me as a black tennis player in the middle of our NY match.”

I’m shocked and disappointed, Ryan Harrison, to hear you tell me how you really feel about me as a black tennis player in the middle of our NY match. I thought this was supposed to be an inclusive gentleman’s sport.

  • Young was not available for comment on Tuesday and did not issue a statement. But Harrison said he hoped a recording of the incident could be found because, he said, it would vindicate him.

“There is zero chance I said anything like he is claiming,” Harrison said, “Please, if anyone has a video or a recording, please bring it forward.”

The ATP, the governing body of the men’s professional tennis tour, is conducting an investigation into the incident and according to two people familiar with it, no evidence had surfaced by Tuesday evening to support Young’s accusation. The ATP has spoken to both players, the chair umpire, ball kids assigned to the match and screened videotape of the incident.

“The ATP takes any allegations of racial prejudice extremely seriously,” a statement issued by the organization said.

The incident stemmed from a contentious argument that occurred during a changeover in the first set of Monday’s match, which Harrison won, 6-3, 7-6 (4). It escalated to the point that the umpire had to come down from his chair to separate them.

About 30 minutes after the match, Harrison said, the ATP supervisor for the tournament, Tom Barnes, called him into his office and, with Young present, notified Harrison of Young’s charge.

“I was totally shocked,” Harrison said. “I begged him to find a tape of the broadcast. I said I would sign a document right there on the spot saying I would accept a three-month suspension, without appealing, if it’s true.”

The video recording of the match shows Harrison and Young arguing almost to the brink of fighting, but no clear audio recording of their conversation has emerged.

“The chair umpire witnessed and was a part of the entire exchange,” Harrison said in a statement released by the ATP on Tuesday afternoon. “The argument occurred directly in front of him. Anyone who follows the sport of tennis knows that if anything of a racial nature occurred, the chair umpire would be required to give me an immediate code violation. The fact that no code violation occurred is further proof that no disparaging racial comments were made or said. Any audio of this exchange will confirm this and I encourage anyone with the available resources to find it.”

Harrison said that he and Young had engaged in “trash talk” about tennis only.

“I know for a fact that I didn’t say it,” he said. “This isn’t an incident that I have a cloudy or vague memory of. I remember it word for word. It’s why I was so adamant about a video or audio coming into play, because I knew I was 100 percent in the clear there.”

Harrison and Young have a long history of on-court acrimony, and the grudge appeared to escalate in Monday’s first-round match at the Veterans Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y., the new home of the NY Open.

Harrison has a reputation as a hotheaded player and acknowledged that he has made many missteps on the court, but added that it was never anything like this.

“I am very passionate on the court I know there are times when I have been wrong,” he said. “But this is not one of those times. That is why I wanted them to listen to the audio, because I know there is nothing like that on there.”

Harrison was scheduled to play a doubles match on Tuesday with Steve Johnson. If they win, and Young and Matthew Ebden win their doubles match on Wednesday, Young and Harrison would find themselves facing one another on court again.

Harrison said he and Young walked past one another in the player hotel on Tuesday, but nothing was said.

In singles, their professional rivalry dates to 2010. They have played eight times with Harrison winning six, including the last four.

The New York Open is a new tour event. It was previously held at this time of year in Memphis, and that was the last time Harrison and Young had played before Monday.

not sure what that means? Be honest, do you think he said it?
I'm skeptical. See up two posts. Frankly a really incredible incident. This crap might fly in politics, but basically Young and his girlfriend have attempted to destroy Harrison's career.

Im hoping for it was a misunderstanding from Youngs side.
As you know having lived here its a charged issue and will remain so in the US. I have very intelligent and successful friends who would be on Young's side and quick to assume ill motivations by the police, etc. We have Medvedev in Savannah who appears to have said and done much worse in the heat of competition. Rightfully he got a bit of a pass (and from Young) simply because he's foreign. If a French player like Gasquet or Monfils thinks the local German officials are against him in Hamburg they might say something in the heat of competition. Seems like much the same thing and they might be right is saying so. When do we move on and see such actions as minor foibles rather than something of a more serious nature? I generally listen and watch.

I'll say the current atmosphere in politics has consequences; someone close to me rather foolishly has let politics mix with finances and engaged in some rather poor market timing recently (or they may be right such is the nature of market timing.) Such irrational moves rarely pay off and the damage in the short run may be 10's of thousands which of course in the long run is just a massive amount of money.

The thing is, here in Europe we don't have any hard feelings towards Germany anymore. Its in USA stuff like that still happens against the Germans. It seems you guys have a hard time letting go, and carry the victim thing on your shoulders forever. One can see that in your politics and how easily you guys get offended and make drama about things. Since its so vulnerable its very easy to make mistakes that wasnt meant cruel.

So you are accusing Donald Young of doing this solely to destroy 'Harrison's career'? What evidence do you have for this serious accusation?

I saw your other post. It doesn't sound like you are skeptical it happened, just that you think Young should lump it. I can't agree. It doesn't have to ruin Harrison, but he can't keep acting this way.

Laver cup was played on black courts, too, right? May be a stupid question, but is there anything characteristic to them?

What? Do you think sponsors will want anything to do with a confirmed racist? ATP would have to institute some ban for the action. Its a great start at the very least to such a thing. You think Harrison can be some kind of on court Nastase these days without consequences?

I'm skeptical now given the ATP's finding. A finding the other way would have been ruinous.

wait these are made out of wood? Not typical hardcourt?
I think all the temporary indoor hard courts are essentially wood. Way back when wood mental a basketball court like surface possible with different lines. This would have more grit level.

Never knew that, interesting. Functionally all that matters is the gritty paint? Then why would everyone use wood?

It's almost impossible to play anything but S&V on a plain wood basketball court...the ball just skids and rarely bounces above knee level. A very thick level of acrylic must be coated over the temporary wood foundation to provide a bounce similar to what the players are used to at outdoor HCs.

It seems that you are right.
