Yeah someone should give it an edit.

Fedr saying number one is perhaps the ultimate achievement, I agree.

Disagree somewhat, a slam title on its own is still worth a lot. #1 spot without a slam isn't as much in my eyes.

Astonishing accomplishment, I am running out of superlatives for this man.

Some of the comments weren't exactly the classiest here but to all the good Fed supporters, massive congrats to your player on becoming the oldest world number 1 and confirming his status as the greatest tennis player of all time. Have a good evening.

How often has someone been number one without a slam though? Sampras hit number one prior to winning Wimbledon in 1993 iirc and of course there's Rios but generally if you're number one you have slam.

Lendl did it too.

This is absolutely incredible, folks! Federer just pulled off the impossible. I'm going enjoy this one!

Here's what some of the doubters have said during the years:

late Summer, 2008: there's no way Federer will be #1 again.
mid-2010: there's no way Federer will be #1 again.
middle of 2013: this time, I will bet everything I own that Federer will NEVER be #1 again. Federer got lucky in 2009 and 2012. This time, I mean it!! This is it!!!

wait for it........................

Federer is #1 again!!!!!!

A fair point. Though being no.1 without a slam is rare (though does happen as we know), so we can almost say that being no.1 is almost always subject to a slam win anyway, which might make one weight it more favourably.

Given Fed's last 13 months or so, I'd say that at least at his age the #1 ranking is definitely the more impressive - Just because Fed won 3 slams and has JUST about made it to no.1. Consistency through the season with the higher risk of injury and off days just seems a greater overall challenge than necessarily getting through one of the big fortnights.

I can't believe Fed's #1. Surreal, yet paradoxically fitting.

Bad internet connection. Can you feel me in? What happened after the match? What did Krajicek do? Thanks

A trophy ceremony. Krajicek praising like Fed was God's reincarnation. Krajicek almost cried. Several Swiss fans cried.

Have not seen a more funnier trophy. A big box labelled 'Oldest No 1 player' . Box open at top and is like a wooden crate that Mirka can stuff the kids toys

Richard was really over the top in praising Roger and talked for a long time. They showed a video of Roger's past triumphs. Fed looked like he was about to cry (and might have shed a tear) when he mentioned Mirka and the kids. Then Richard gave him a really cheap looking shoebox "award." But have to admit that Richard's aged very well, still fit, trim and pretty damn handsome!

In addition to becoming the oldererest #1 at age 36, fedr also has the longest gap between #1 reigns at 5 years, 15 weeks AND the longererest gap between first #1 reign and last...an astonishing 14 years and two weeks!
I think Fedr broke the spacetime continuum. We stopped going linear through time and now we're goin in circles. Wimbly final 2018, Federer d. Roddick, I'm calling it.

PS, I fail at gifs (actually why has that been a problem recently?)

maybe I will join you, because tennis right now is a joke. I am just waiting for Kyrgios to grow up a little. someone must support the youngsters...Fed has enough fans already. :)

Those would have been some questioned overheads used in setting up that ceremony for Fed had he lost. Maybe that's why they fashioned his award out of a cardboard promo unit from Debenhams.
