OK, the grass-court season is nearly upon us! Threads about Wimbledon are already invading the hallowed ground of RG match threads, so it is probably time to start with threads for the first grass-court tune-ups.

Things to watch in Stuttgart:

* Federer returns. Will he be well-rested and rearing to go after letting clay be clay, or will he be susceptible to an early upset again? Tommy Haas isn't playing anymore so we shall see!

* #1 on the line? If Nadal defends his RG title on Sunday, he will remain at #1. However, Fedr can return to the top spot with a win or final appearance in Stuttgart.

* Title #98? A win would move Roger closer to the 100 titles mark - if he takes both Stuttgart and Halle, he will go for #100 (as well a s #21 & #9) at Wimbledon!

* Pouille defends Lucas won the title here last year and enters as #2 seed. Can he defend his title? (Particularly if Fed slips up before the final.)

* NextGen boom or bust? Will Chung & Kyrgios actually play? And how will Shapovalov fare on grass after his great clay-court season?

Any other thoughts?

The last year loss to Haas was so strange for me at least.Haas was the last person I would expect Federer to lose especially considering he was 39.

Probably the winner: Roger Federer
Actually the winner: Marco Cecchinato (I think he's playing.)

Ah, is he? Not yet listed on the tournament website:

That could be an interesting first-round encounter for Fed ... but given that all but one of his Challenger & Futures titles have come on clay, I am not sure I expect him to be a force on grass. (Even without accounting for the fact that he will surely be knackered after this week.)

No Haas, No Hassle path to the title #98 for Vulturerer. Please, draw deity (if you exist), let it be bottom half of the draw for Shapo so we can have an epic final!!!
Can/should Fed go all out to win both Stuttgart & Halle? Would be quite a few matches in two weeks, with only a week's break before Wimbledon.

I guess he'll be happy with one or the other. Would be nice for him to get #10 in Halle though.

Rooting for Shapo and Chung, Fed has had his time but now it’s time for #NextGen!

@Meles has fully converted me.
Well playtime with Fed hasn't happened enough for the younglings so Stuttgart should be a nice change of pace. I like Shapo's chances here and at Eastbourne. Fed will be working off the rust plus is playing Stuttgart for a massive appearance fee so he could go down to any one of those seeds all of whom have credible grass games save Chung. Fritz, Paire, Mischa, and possibly Dustin Brown may be dangerous floaters. Best field Stuttgart has had on grass for sure. Should be a dandy.:p

There are two slots reserved for SE's but the only ATP level being competed is RG and Chachi is already in MD DE section so those slots should go to the top two alternates, no?

Yes. Makes sense to me. MTF has gone down hill with these entry lists as they used to list alternates and actually maintain the OPs with half a brain. Now they never update the OPs and it seems to me that the qualifers are in the alternates list always, but some other players may not be.

The source is the official players acceptance list and I was getting hits on these, but not tonight. I'd prefer to correct these for our tournament threads, but the sources for all these schedules is a mystery to me.

tennisteen.it has the SEs removed with Simon and Troicki added to DE for a group of 21, then 3 WCs and 4 Q's.

that actually seems like a pretty decent list of players and I could actually see a few of them giving fed trouble if he is off his game. I suspect a bit of rust in the first few matches and unlike last year (yeah I know hc and grass are not the same) he went into the grass season winning the sunshine double so who knows where he is at the moment with his game.

I don't think kygrios and fed have ever played against each other on grass.

Let's hope those two losses woke him up! I agree there are a few players that could trouble him. Kohly always give him a good fight. Not sure how Kyrgios is at the moment. He played doubles on grass this week but he lost in the first round.

Dunno if that elbow is ready to play singles.

Updates to field:
Bendych:eek: has one wildcard and two remain

Rublev is stuck as the top qualifer presumably due to late entry and is ineligible for direct entry to the main draw unless he gets wildcard. Dustin Brown (@DreddyTennis45 ) has made qualifiers, but might get wildcard. Kokkinakis has made the qualifiers.;) Chung, Ferrer, Monfils, and Cecchinato are out.

bolded players are out

too bad Rublev has to go thru qualifying. He lacks matches due to his long layoff. Hope he makes it. I am curious to see if Nick K. plays as well.

I am so excited to see green grass rather than red clay.

Go Shapo and Roger!

I'd love to see Rublev in the MD too. Hope he truly has his back injury behind him and gets momentum going again.
идти!

As mentioned by others, Chung, Ferrer & Cecchinato have withdrawn from Stuttgart:

PS. Is the forum acting up for anyone else, or is it only me?

Youzhny will be there. I wonder if he and Fed are friends? They're both old now. Federer has a tendency to lose to old players as they're about to go out the door. Plus he's a good grass player!

I guess Youzhny has to go through qualifying. Let's hope he stays far away from Fed!

I'll always have a special spot for Dr Youzhny, ever since witnessing courtside his moment of madness in Miami where he injured himself by hitting his own head with his own racquet. Needed to get a plaster on it, then went on to win the match ...

Federer needs to reach the final to be #1. Barring any unnecessary theatrics he should be able to get it done.

I don't know if Federer should go all out here and in Halle. Better to defend his title at Halle. At his age, two tournaments before Wimbledon might be too much. Don't want him to get tired.

Zverev might not play Halle, so Fed doesn't have to worry about being challenged on grass until Wimbledon.

I say scoop up the points while you can. Couple of extra titles, might push him past Connors when all is said and done.
