I've got almost less belief n Delpo beating Nadal as I do in Thiem doing it.

The absolute WHOOPING here last yr, then in the French, and the tear your guts out loss at Wimbledon has mentally scarred me.

Exactly. Juan Martin playing well but I don’t think mentally he has it to beat nadal. Nadal will get him in long baseline exchanges and move him around. Only Djoko has the whole game and mental strength to beat nadal currently!

Rafa doesn't have a backhand?

:confused:o_O

Lol what???
Nadal's BH is a lot more firing weapon and stable than the slice BH of delpo (which will be eaten for dinner by nadal)

How many points is Nadal winning off of his bh? Most of the times he’s merely trying to hang in there pushing and only very occasionally goes for the low % shot. Definitely not a weapon.

Congrats, Nadal fans! This was an epic match and your guy won.

Thiem is not a next gen mug. The Thiem haters need to give this kid a break. He pushed the potential future GOAT to 5 grueling sets in a massive street fight.

This was a great match and I had to watch it all the way through. Congrats to both players. This match was highly entertaining.

This match might have a big play in whether or not Nadal gets to 21 slam titles. Honestly, this match felt like a championship match. I don’t think that either one of Nadal’s opponents will push Nadal this hard. I see Nadal getting #18 in two more matches. And I don’t see either match going 5 sets.

Thiem deserves credit for not being destroyed but he bottled easy smash to save MP

Bottled serving out for the 3rd set

Couldn't get a first serve in to save his life in deciding TB

Next Gen is still MUGtastic until proven otherwise.

Never is a long time

BTW, Thiem won more games and points lol
More break points, better winner-error ratio and better numbers overall. It felt like a Fed match in which he somehow loses despite having the better stats and multiple opportunities.

Rafa might want to rethink being an atheist. At this point, he must feel there's some divine being helping get out of matches he should have lost. He has better luck than anyone on tour in that regard. Hand it to him — he hangs around like a cockroach that should have been stomped out and somehow snatches victory in the end.

For Thiem it's a case of nice guys finish last. Fake-nice will get all of the kudos from the fawning commentators as usual.

Delpo already lost he doesn't know it yet. He will win first set and everyone on here be like Rafa is done. He is tired. He should retire. Then Rafa wins second set in tie break then everyone will say yes but Rafa is tired from other matches and he won't hold up look he's tired. Then Delpo will win 3rd set and people be like Rafa needs to retire he's done, then Rafa be like winning fourth set and people be like yea but he played 5 set match and is tired he can't do this he's old and weird then Rafa just wins then they say he will be to tired for Novak. And like that is it.

As close as he might come to leaving planet meme behind, but unfortunately the final point could be the greatest meme of them all. Such is life.

Apart from Nadal being dead tired from this match there is one positive.

With Thiem eliminated there's a 99% chance we won't have a Slam champion under 30 two months from now.

how much experience do these guys need ? Thiem is already 25. has been in 2 slam semis, 1 slam final..multiple masters finals.

by the time they get more "experience", they'll be old.

That match was a dead set 50-50. Nadal knows it, you could tell by his reaction at the end. He's been on the wrong end of 50-50 heartbreakers himself, most recently the Wimbledon semi against Djokovic.

I've watched Nadal lose that type of match so many times in the last 4 years. Felt great to see him win.

Terrific showing from Thiem, the balls he showed and the pace he generated.. remarkable. (Obviously) more to come from him.
Nadal only loses these kinds of matches against Djokovic.

I think you're right about Rafa but Djokovic is similar in "stealing" matches. I have come to realize it is a skill, not just luck. But it sure appears as luck.

Haha sour grapes. You didn't whinge about this when Federer trounces Dimitrov constantly...

You need like 42 years now. This is the modern game. Theim will be peak at 47.

Dominic, you were way better than I thought you would be.

And Rafa, you are just a legend for toughness in any sense of the word.

As a Federer fan who considered the tournament to be almost over yesterday I can only say thank you for this match.

By the way, after the Djokovic SF at Wimbledon I think Rafa deserves this now. Otherwise it would have been 2 very close losses in a row. The problem is, that will be no consolation for Thiem...
bravo, sir!

Don't see Nadal getting past Djokovic even if he survives Del Potro on this form.
