    Hi All,

Does anyone know if there are any 2018 plans to have the Borg vs. McEnroe movie released in the United States?

    Best,
    John

idk but since it's an indie film my guess is it will skip the theaters & go straight to cable/netflix at some point..

Neon currently holds distribution rights in the US. No date announcement yet. They have released films such as Colossal, Ingrid Goes West, and I, Tonya within the last year, all on a limited amount of theaters. At best, they will do the same with Borg, at worst they will just release in LA, but simultaneously have it available on VOD(which actually would reach a wider audience than just playing on limited screens)

    Hi Moose,

I appreciate your insight. Ideally, I'd love to see it in the theaters as I always try to support any Tennis movies, in hopes that more will be made. Ultimately, I hope in time I'll be able to see it, in theater or otherwise.

    Thanks again!,
    John

there is a new documentary on John McEnroe called "In the Realm of Perfection" that just premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, and is getting pretty good reviews.
It includes rare footage that a French filmmaker took during Roland Garros in the 80s. The film ends with an extensive look at the 84 Final. There is a short trailer on YouTube.

Borg McEnroe is getting a theatrical release April 13 in the US. Sort of surprised.

Most interesting, and thanks for posting. Where had you heard that info? I ask, as I wonder if it will be a nationwide release, or if it might just be a limited release. Either way, after quite a delay from releases elsewhere, I too am very surprised.

I spoke to someone from AMC Guest Services and they confirmed that it will be a nationwide release.

Excellent news! I'm looking forward to seeing it, not only because I am a McEnroe fan, but also I like to try and support tennis movies. Plus, it does not hurt that the film is based on such a iconic match. Thanks for posting to let us know!

I'll probably go see it myself but chances are it'll be an excruciating bore. The one good thing about the otherwise pedestrian biopic Battle of the Sexes was its refusal to shy away from how BJK's affair with her hairdresser (in real life her former secretary Marilyn Barnett) exacted its toll on her loving, understanding husband, unlike many LGBTQ narratives (including ultimately this one, I should add) which tend to focus on the one central victim whose transition and/or inevitable transformation overwhelms any other concerns. And the worst part about it, unsurprisingly, happened to involve scenes of actual (amateur) tennis which I can't imagine was palatable to anyone.

Generally speaking the best sports movies (if they are to be classified as such) are those where sports play a decidedly minor role. I just don't see how Borg vs. McEnroe has room for even a little of the good when its very title seems to promise a lot of the bad.

    Hi TTWarrior,

I believe you've confused a couple of my posts.

Borg vs. McEnroe is a movie, and then later this year there is a separate project, indeed a documentary, titled In the Realm of Perfection.

    Hope that helps,
    John

So much for the wide release, it's not playing at any major theatre in LA (playing at an AMC in Torrance) I think VOD would have been a better strategy, they are going to lose money on this.

its also playing in west hollywood, but yea only 2-3 theaters in los angeles area...

    from wikipedia:
    Box office: 16.66 million USD
Budget: 65 million SEK ($7.5 million)

so i guess its considered a success, considering theyll make even more $ when its released on demand, dvd, etc...

i havent seen it yet but from what it sounds like, as long as you go into it knowing its not
fact based documentary of any sort, and more of an embellished story made for film the better...
i think casual tennis fans might like it better than hardcore ones since they wont be yelling at the
screen things like "borg wouldnt say that... or mac didnt sound like that...or play that way...." lol

Just watched this on comcast cable on demand. Borg’s junior story was interesting. The matchplay not so much. Would have rather watched the actual match.

Looking to find out if Borg-McEnroe was released on Netflix, I found this documentary: Boris Becker—Der Spieler.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt8225174/?ref_=nv_sr_2

Pretty interestIng take on Becker’s history, youthful playing, Wimbledon wins, Davis Cup career, ups and downs, injuries, poker playing, bankruptcy, health, and present.

Lots of interviews, including his sister, mother, coach Bosch, manager Tiriac, first wife, present wife, Steeb, Stich, and of course Becker himself.

By the end I had more respect for Mr. Becker than when I started.

I too was hoping for more from the USA release, but feared otherwise being that it is some 7 months later than the initial premiere.

Since it is not playing too closely to where I live, the Comcast On Demand option sounds interesting.

However, at this point of waiting, I might just wait until it is released on disc, and purchase it then.
