Federer and other male players have cursed umpires out and did not get a violation. That's why I say that game penalty was bulls**t. He gave her that violation because he got mad and emotional, and an umpire is supposed to be the coolest person in the room. Serena should have known how this has played out in years past and not fall into the same trap.

Yep. Serena lost the match when she lost her composure instead of putting her energy into figuring out a way to win.

That is true. Serena did herself no favors by getting emotional over the umpire.

She should have addressed the umpiring after the match.

She's clearly sensitive about the officiating at the open after the capriati match years ago.
Right. She wasn’t thinking clearly and it cost her dearly.

She was way too nervous in this final. She needs to start seeing herself as the underdog with nothing to lose from here on out tbh or this will keep repeating itself.

Interesting how Crissy "the fixer" is praising Serena for her "leadership" during the trophy ceremony while she was the one creating the whole situation in the first place.
She was clearly frustrated that she did not have answers to Naomi's game on the court and she unleashed to the umpair instead for applying the rules to her. Classy!

Naomi was impressive in her conduct all this time and she deserves all the praise in the world. Such a sweet, modest, respectful girl! She did not deserve to be be robbed of this moment by the drama created around her by Serena's attitude.

Serena is the undisputed champion of the sport and she should behave like one, but she didn't. After she got the point penalty she should've shut up an just focus on the match. Getting a warning for coaching did not imply she was "cheating" so her subsequent tantrums were unjustified and rightfully so sanctionable.

Journalist: “Serena, did the chairperson have an outcome in tonight’s match?”
Serena: “It’s hard to say that I wouldn’t have gotten a new level. That’s a tough question.”

Very gracious, Serena. Just what we’d expect!

Indeed, as does any sane person.

Which is worrying, as there are a few here that don’t seem to believe that Williams was behaving like a bully. Bizarrely some are even blaming the umpire for doing his job well.
Even in the case Ramos had been unfair in calling coaching, serena was absolutely awful.

Ramos maybe exaggerated for calling that coaching. From there onwards, it was Serena’s fault. He should not take being called a thief.

Ramos was a joke. I LOL at Serena too bringing up her daughter at one point during the argument to say how she would never cheat. Serena is a drama queen. I fully get that. Umpires shouldn't influence games. They don't have to take abuse, but when other players like Chris Evert are saying that it's nothing to mandate a game penalty, I don't see how one can say with 100% conviction that she deserved a game penalty in a close GS Finals. Naomi had taken control of the match and Serena was imploding due to Naomi's brilliance. If calling him a thief was the worst Serena said, Ramos should have put on his big boy pants on and just kept quiet, and let Naomi take care of the rest.

It is high time the grand slams, ATP, WTA, and ITF got together and ensure some much-needed consistency in tennis officiating: Consistency between umpires, matches & tournaments on how coaching violations, racket violations and game violations are called. There is so much variation between how violations are called by different umpires that it only leads to confusion among the players and surprise when they play a match officiated more strictly than they are used to. I certainly hope this is the last time this happens in a grand slam.

Yes, he should. Ramos was the one who started that entire chain of events. When you are a chair umpire, you should be extremely non-intrusive and just call balls and lines. The double-standard to the men's tour is ridiculous. There will be a post-review of this by the WTA and the USTA, I am sure. Ramos could have been called a lot worse than "thief". Give me a break.

Chair umpires should *never* have quick-trigger fingers. Ramos gave out warnings to Williams like candy. The guy got emotional and played a significant part in the way the match was finished. That should never happen in tennis.

All of that said... Osaka would have won anyways... Williams was not on her game.

This is total nonsense. No one knows how a match is going to end until it ends, and no one is supposed to know.

Total nonsense again, as you're trying to suggest Ramos shouldn't have done his job. Getting sensitive (besides this merely being your opinion) has nothing to do with it.

Total nonsense is your post. No one is asking Ramos to not do his job. The same people like you calling out Serena for acting like a little baby can't admit that the umpire acted like one too.

More like Patrick was the one who started this chain of events. Regardless of whether Serena noticed or not.

YEE-HAA! What a result! Williams proves what a biatch she is right to the end,has to make everything about her and take the shine off Osaka's win. Hopefully this is the last we see of Williams in a GS final and the first of many for Osaka...

Non-intrusive is exactly right.

Getting a warning for coaching does imply that as it's against the tournament rules. If it's against the rules hence it's cheating?

This is hilarious. Patrick saying he did coach and everyone does it. Serena at the same time is saying she didnt see him do anyting, but then says he was saying cmon. Cannot make this up. Hilarious

ESPN analysts are awful.

Chris McHendry arguing that Serena is right that she was targeted because she is female.

The other analyst said that Serena was so “powerful” in her words in the press conference.
Absurd.

Do people actually get paid to say these things on TV?

She was being targeted because she was a female... so that her opponent, who was... wait for it... also a female... would win?

The coaching stuff is nonsense. Its almost like the ref in pro wrestling looking the other way, when the chair is used. All these people are doing it. If thats a problem then put the coach up in the last row of the stadium.
