Kerber-Bertens 6:1, 3:6, 1:1
Bertens improved in success rate profit points after 2nd service - while in first set gained only 1 out of 8 points after 2nd service, in the 2nd set 8 out of 14 points.

lol Bertens. Welcome to Singapore.
You were saying?

Looks like Svitolina is not the only one you underestimated ;)

Really impressive by Bertens, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect after her recent losses. I do think a lot of those losses were partially due to the pressure of having to qualify though.

Kerber-Bertens 6: 1, 3: 6, 4: 6
So, in the first two days the 2018 WTA finals she didn't win a single favorite (or TOP 4 seeds).

crazy :D i thought the atmosphere of her first finals will overwhelmed her but i was so wrong lol

I'm not familiar with round robin, how many wins does a player need to win the whole thing? Osaka lost to Stephens, does that mean its over?

No, it a matrix and divided into two groups/sections and each section plays each other and then the winners of the two sections plays each other to determine the champion.

Any visual to show this? How many matches does one player have to play through the entire tournament? So 4 matches per player then the final is their 5th match?

Thought this was three matches in round robin play. 1st plays 2nd place in the other group, winner is in the finals.

If she loses to Kerber next round, she is out of contention, if not, she can still try to qualify with a win over Bertens. Irrespective of whether she wins or loses against Kerber, she will still have to play the match against Kiki.

Yes. So based on this scenario on Osaka perspective.

Both winners and losers facing each other for 2nd match.
If Osaka lost to Kerber and Sloane win vs Bertens. Sloane need to beat Kerber and Osaka won with the set margin better than all other 2 for her to qualify.
If Osaka lost to Kerber and Bertens win vs Sloane then Osaka will not qualify no matter what the outcome of her match vs Bertens.
If Osaka win vs Kerber and Sloane win. The winner of Osaka vs Bertens will accompany Sloane
If Osaka win vs Kerber and Bertens win. it's very complicated and depend on both of the last match.

No she still can qualify under scenario 1.

Yeah a bit confusing for me since I'm not familiar with the round robin style. So basically luck also has a factor. I went to check 2016 winner Dominika Cibulkova and she won even though looks like she lost both of her earlier matches. I'll figure this out eventually I guess.

She lost 2 out of 3 of her round robin matches but so did 2 of the other 3 in her group so she qualified in 2nd place on her greater number of sets and games won. Ironically one of the players she lost to in the round robin was Kerber (who was the only one in their group to win all 3 of her matches) and then she beat Kerber in the final!

Hmm so do you think this set up is fair? Seems strange a bit to me.

Well, it's been the standard format of the YEC finals for both women and men down the years. In the round robin it all comes down to how well you do against the other members of your group. You may lose matches but then they may do too and so it can come down to fine margins to decide which 2 will qualify out of the group for the semi-finals. This is clearly what happened with the WTA finals in 2016. In my opinion it does make for an interesting variation on the normal 1 match shootouts between the players.

Yeah, being an alternate is the gig. Nicely paid week in Singapore, may have to play one match on the third day when someone is already eliminated, then you get even more coin if you win it against a player just waiting for the semis.

Someone has withdrawn from Zhuhai because Wang is now in with direct entry, & Zhang gets the WC.

Not sure who yet, could be DasKa or Sevastova since the alternates here are allowed to bail without penalty.

Woz breaks! Also, thanks for the heads up that this match was going on :)

Kvitová breaks back! Nothing to see here! :D

I wish they wouldn't mangle names. It isn't Ki-vit-to-va. The commentator should ask Sharapova or Navratilova how to pronounce Kvitova's name correctly.

Woz takes the first set after a tight battle.
