Kvitova-Wozniacki 5:7, 6:3, 2:6
Since time the WTA Finals moved to Singapore, Kvitova has never won more than one match in the group. Slow hard surface in Singapore doesn't suit her tennis.

Pliskova-Svitolina 3:6, 3:2
Pliskova has a bad conversion of BPs today - 0/8
Svitolina has produced 3 BPs, but one of them converted into a break.

good. we need pliskova to lost in 2 sets that kvitova will still have a chance to get thru

Pliskova-Svitolina 3:6, 6:2
The previous 8 BPs Pliskova throw awayed, but in the second set brokes Svitolina's service two times in a row.

Let’s talk about why everyone is really there. $110K to show, $153K more for the 4 winners so far.

Not sure what you're getting at. Sure, the money is pretty good, but all these women have won a lot of money already anyway.
This is a highly prestiguous tournament in its own right where you get to battle the best of the year.

You seem to be underestimating the simple drive to win/honor in top athletes and overestimating the role prize money plays. These are not Tomic'es we're talking about.

Yeah, being an alternate is the gig. Nicely paid week in Singapore, may have to play one match on the third day when someone is already eliminated, then you get even more coin if you win it against a player just waiting for the semis.

This is true. with the additional kicker that they can still go to Zhuhai as well and get paid for both tourneys (see Mladenovic last year). Not sure if they're still allowed to play Zhuhai if they end up playing a match in Singapore though, but I assume not.

Elina Svitolina one set away from the semifinals.

1. Svitolina, 2-0, 4-1
2. Pliskova, 1-1, 3-2
3. Wozniacki, 1-1, 2-3
4. Kvitova, 0-2, 1-4

Everyone can still qualify.

It’s quite interesting. Kvitová leads the Pliskova H2H 3-0. Svitolina leads Wozniacki 3-1 but Caro won their last match which was in Singapore last year.

My tips are Caroline and Svitolina to get through.

Wozniacki will win this again.
Ugh.
Not sure why Ugh. It’s not like it would be a fluke this tournament unlike Beijing. All top 10 players, 3 of the 4 slam champs with only Halep missing but Woz did beat Halep to win the AO (so it’s not like she’s incredibly lucky she withdrew unlike if it was say Serena who dominates her). Even if she loses to Svitolina but makes the SF she’d then need to beat Osaka/Kerber/Bertens/Sloane and then someone in the final. Hardly bad.

This slow mud court will be the end of all the hard hitters. It is so frustrating, especially when they don't have a good transition game, they can't hit through the court, and the others have time to set-up and return their balls, everytime, tiring them out. Petra tried coming to the net a bit, but how many times can you do this when are used to the baseline? The counterpunchers will take this title methinks (Sloane, Caroline, Elina, even Bertens has a good game for this court)

Naomi and Petra say that the court is fast(er).
Elina has been amazing so far especially that first match against Petra where she only makes like 7 or 8 errors.

Yeah it's really weird to see Petra couldn't blow the opponent off court, that's why I'm thinking maybe she's powered down?

They need to move it back to somewhere with a halfway decent time exchange. This is comically horrendous how little coverage this is getting on any platform.

Kerber wasn't playing well. She wasn't as good as she was at the start of the year. Even though Osaka came back in the second, I didn't ever think she was going to win. (now in these situations, what would happen in WWSD is that when down, Serena would have that shift up of gears we are so familiar with and become a new player) Difference between these two is that Kerber is ready to fight for it however she's playing.

Osaka doesn't have a great 3 set record or a great record against top tenners. I don't know why she got so many votes over on tf. Still, I voted Kvitova and she's about out of this one too.

And certain people around here actually think these 8 truly give a sh*t about anything other than the $. This tourney is, & always has been, a sham.

Huh? From Aga to Wozniacki, they always seems very emotional on winning this.

Just because it doesn't go your way doesn't mean they don't give a shat.

Where are the Finals moving next year? Last year for Singapore

Boca Raton (1972-1973), Los Angeles (1974-1976, 2002-2005), Oakland (1978), New York City (1977, 1979-2000), Munich (2001), Madrid (2006-2007), Doha (2008-2010), Istanbul (2011-2013) and Singapore (2014-2018), Shenzhen (2019-2028)

That was brilliant and imaginative tennis from Sloane in such a hard match, she stayed tough to the very end.

I expect KikiB and WangQ will take a big step up next year in slams.

Agreed.

Even club players want to win their matches, let alone pros that spent so much time and effort to BE pros. These matches come with points, reputation, achievements, fame, $$.
Yet some tennis 'fans' think they don't care? Sure... I guess they fought their heart out to try and qualify for the last few spots just to 'not care'.

Osaka seems like a reverse version of 2017 Ostapenko: almost every single match is a 3-setter, but she loses them all.

Sloane putting a solid performance so far. Kinda surprised, but not really at the same time. Streaky is her middle name.

Osaka already showing signs of post-Slam slump.
How long it will last will be career-defining.

Not sure I agree. She made finals of Tokyo while dead tired after USO18 with the media/travel/etc.. Then made SFs of Beijing. Had to pullout from Hong Kong w/ injury.
She lost the 2 matches at YEC, both in 3 sets, w/ chances to win the 2nd one.

I'd agree to post-slam slumps if she was blown off the courts. But making SF/F and losing in 3sets coming back from injury against top10 players? Not so much.
