Not sure I agree. She made finals of Tokyo while dead tired after USO18 with the media/travel/etc.. Then made SFs of Beijing. Had to pullout from Hong Kong w/ injury.
She lost the 2 matches at YEC, both in 3 sets, w/ chances to win the 2nd one.

I'd agree to post-slam slumps if she was blown off the courts. But making SF/F and losing in 3sets coming back from injury against top10 players? Not so much.

The same thing was said of Ostapenko after she managed to win the Korean Open.
You can only ride the wave of the good feel you had in your strokes for a magical two weeks for so long.

Hardly the same when you consider that Ostapenko played 2 slams after her slam victory before winning the Korean Open. Give Osaka a chance. It’s barely been 3 months. We haven’t even had any slams since her win and the back end of the year is always known for being a bit of a wildcard anyway. Let’s see how she goes in 2019 before saying she’s finished. It’s not like she’s gone on a Sloane Stephens 8 match losing streak after winning a slam..

I would just like someone I like to step up for once.
It's like after Serena everybody's forbidden to win more than a measly two Slams, it's getting a bit annoying.
Someone at least attempt to make a race of it.

I am dying to see Svitolina play tomorrow. she should cream Wozniaki. Elina is so much more beautiful too.

I expect Wozniacki to still go through though.
She'll always be there unless someone wipes the floor with her.
And to be honest none of the attacking players have impressed me so far.
In a final against Wozniacki, I wouldn't trust either Pliskova or Stephens to get it done.

Well I still have some faith in Kerber. Should be interesting, I just really don’t want Svitolina to win it. I want a slam champ to take this out. Doesn’t even need to be a reigning slam champ (Sloane or Kvitová would be fine). Sorry to Svitolina, Bertens and Pliskova but I’m sick of the slamless YEC.

Pliskova into the SF’s for the first time in her career.

Battle is on between Svitolina and Wozniacki for the last spot in the White group.

I hate it when a player who won the first two round robin matches isn't safely through to the semifinal yet, especially when it's one of those I cheer for. :p

Can Svitolina qualify if she loses in straight but tight two sets like a couple of tiebreaks for example? I know she only needs one set to go through but if she doesn't take it, is there a certain number of games that would be enough for her to advance anyway?

The intensity in this match between Svitolina and Woz is off the wall. Even at such a moment, these two are playing such great clutch tennis. Svitolina's forehand cc. Woz kept coming up with shots and plays you never expected from her in 2011. Svitolina took the second set finally on her 4th sp and qualifies.

Both walk off the court for a break after that game.

And that first point in the third set with Woz relentlessly attacking the net even against that Svitolina forehand finally plays a slice volley with Svitolina running herself off the court and losing her racquet.

Great tennis.

Woz is out according to the commentator, btw.

She's playing for pride and as the defending champion she's going down with a fight.

It is hard playing when you know even if you win, you lose.

Respect Woz.

Svitolina takes the match 6-3 in the third, but Woz kept battling to the end, got three bps, saved a mp.

Neither tanked or played with any less in that third set though the outcome was already clear. They both could have thrown that set, Woz because she's out, Svitolina to save some energy.

7 three setters so far in the YEC.

That would have been a mother of all lucky escapes if Woz held in that 12th game of the 2nd set and forced a tiebreak. Good thing that didn't happen.

Never watched a 3rd set of one of my favorites so relaxed like today. :D Hopefully Eli can get at least one more win, but it has already been a solid tournament for her and a clear improvement compared to her entire 2nd half of the season.
Pliskova is groupwinner even if svitolina wins in 3
Impossible since Svitolina won all of her round robin matches.

Correction
She is group winner and might avoid stephens

Wow, that is really unfortunate for her. I hope she can manage it and keep the impacts minimal.

Agreed that it is great for her to have finally won a major, because I imagine that would be a tough mental hurdle if she had not and then got that news.

Horrible news for Caroline. Let's hope the medical treatment she receives will enable her to keep on playing (at least she can afford the best) although I now expect it's going to cut her career shorter than she had planned. At least she attained her one remaining goal of winning a Slam before this disease has had a chance to kick in! :(
Very sad news.
She still managed to win the China Open with it so it seems like the treatment is really good but of course it will just get worse over time. She definitely won’t be having a Serena or Venus career going til she’s in her late 30s but she got to #1 at like 20 so I doubt she was going to stick around for that long anyway. I’d love for her to get some more slams but I’ll always be happy she did get one.

According to Martina, the court is so slow an attacking player has got no chance in Hell to win.
Even Kim Clijsters and Sophie Amiach said the same, that it must be very frustrating for them not be able to hit through the court for shots otherwise in other courts it would have been a winners. And even Serena was mentioned as the only one who could do it. Let's see how Pliskova does it in the semis.

I would just like someone I like to step up for once.

With regard to Osaka, of course you can expect a period of adjustment and getting used to the expectations and pressures. Imagine she was no. 74 at the beginning of the season, no titles, now she is top 10, with two major titles and so many people and their mothers, including her country, sponsors and tennis tennis legends expecting her to lead from the front while meeting sponsor demands - pressers, photoshoots, and other commitments. I just hope that she deals with this in the off-season, including working on other aspects of her game: Shopping List: winning from behind when a set down, approaching the net to finish the points - get a transition game, plan B & C when her bit hitting is failing her, playing against counter-punchers and top 10 opposition. Once Osaka's pre-Beijing first serve comes back, she can always win a lot of points,.

The difference between her and Penko is the serve and playing within the margins. Penko just hits anything on sight accruing UE's and she is one of the tour leaders with double faults. Post-FO she tried, but you can only get so many UE's and win on a regular basis if you are a first-strike player. She needs to improve on that.

IF (That's a big if), Sloane decide to care, she could destroy Kerber.
Kerber wasn't playing good even when she won against Osaka.

All in all there are a lot of quality matches! Maybe because the court is so slow there are a lot of rally going on.
@EkVraNaamEnVan yeah it seems so slow, even in IW Osaka could blow Halep out of court. Stephens has big advantage me thinks as she is comfortable at penetrating the net than some of the players. Other one is Svitolina as she's also a really good all around player.

Just like Goerges, Pliskova is a fan of WTA.

On Osaka
“I think the group is actually very close, because all the players are similar. I think Naomi [Osaka] didn't play that well. She pretty much was close in all her matches, but for me, the surface, is not easy for the attacking players here, because it's just a little bit slower, so they miss more a little bit.”

On Sloane
“I was not surprised,” she said of the former US Open champion’s 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 comeback. “I thought she was gonna win it, from the very beginning of the match. I think she's actually playing well here. For me, she's the best from the group, and she can, depends on her mood, but she can be very tough and very good player.”
