Another day, another Premier Mandatory.

First Premier+ title of the clay season (although the WTA really need to hurry up and promote Stuttgart up).

Massive draw.

Seeds are: Halep, Wozniacki, Muguruza, Svitolina, Ostapenko, Pliskova, Garcia, Venus, Sloane, Kvitova, Goerges, Vandeweghe, Keys, Kasatkina, Sevastova and Rybarikova.
Wildcards have gone to: Arruabarrena, Garcia Perez, Kostyuk, Puig and Sorribes Tormo.
Azarenka is using her protected ranking :D

Most of the unseeded players are dangerous but here's ones to look out for: Makarova, Stosur, Pavs, Mertens, Kontaveit, Domi, Kuznetsova, Suarez Navarro, Sharapova(!), Osaka, Mladenovic, Barty, Bertens and more!

A lot of withdrawals: Serena was given a WC but withdrew. Apparently she definitely will play Rome next week. Other players out of Madrid: Bacsinszky, Bellis, Kerber (what's happened there?), Radwanska, Safarova and Siegemund.

Halep is the defending champ in singles whilst Chan/Hingis were the defending champs but Hingis has now returned.

Halep and Woz in contention for #1. Wozniacki must reach the SF to have a shot at regaining #1. If Halep makes the final then she'll remain #1 no matter what.

Should be an exciting week of tennis.

So, who will win Madrid? Done a poll, didn't know who to bump from the top 8 + Kvitova so I haven't put Sharapova in there. You can whinge at me if you really want.

Lots of juicy 1R:

Halep v Makarova. Makarova is the queen of top 10 wins and she did beat Halep last year so that's one to watch.
Stosur v Pavs.
Pliskova v Vesnina.
Muguruza v Peng.
Venus v Kontaveit.
Garcia v Cibulkova.
Martic v Kuznetsova.
Rybarikova v Konta.
Strycova v Suarez Navarro.
Svitolina v Cornet.
Sharapova v Buzarnescu. (Buzarnescu currently in the Prague final whilst Sharapova is a 5x slam champ of course)
Osaka v Zhang
Coco v Kiki
Woz v Gavrilova

Possible 2R matches are even better:

Halep v Mertens
Sloane v Stosur/Pavs
Pliskova v Azarenka
Kvitova v Puig (Olympic SF right there)
Garcia/Domi v Kuznetsova/Martic
Ostapenko v Sharapova!!!!
Kiki/Coco v Osaka
Woz v Barty

We'll see Mladenovic drop down the rankings quite a bit after that 15 match losing streak she had. She's the defending finalist in Madrid so has 600 points to defend.

Bouchards ranking will plummet after this week. She's at #118 in the world with 565 points. 215 of those points were from the Madrid QF last year. She's not even in the draw so she'll drop all those points and go to about #170. That's Bernard Tomic levels of bad..

Gone for Muguruza to win but Kvitova is a close 2nd.

Halep's draw is brutal so I can't tip her.
1R: Makarova
2R: Mertens (who's in the Rabat final)
3R: Keys
QF: Sloane/ Stuttgart champ Pliskova.
SF: Muguruza/Kvitova
F: Ostapenko/Svitolina

If Muguruza can get past Peng then she should make the QF as Garcia Lopez/Vekic 2R shouldn't be an issue and 3R Kasatkina is out of form. Her QF opponent Kvitova is my biggest worry but it depends which Petra shows up. If it's Madrid 2015 Petra where she easily beat Serena then she's got it but who knows with her.

Kvitova's draw is alright:
1R: Tsurenko
2R: Puig/Diyas
3R: Venus
QF: Muguruza
SF: Halep/Pliskova
F: Ostapenko/Svitolina

Pliskova's draw is too brutal for me to even try and justify her.
1R: Vesnina
2R: Azarenka
3R: Sloane/Stosur/Pavs
QF: Halep

That's a crazy first 4 matches. If she gets through that, that's incredible.

Svitolina has a tough draw too:
1R: Cornet
2R: Strycova/Carla
3R: Rybarikova/Konta (lol)
QF: Garcia/Kuzy/Goerges
SF: Ostapenko/Sharapova/Barty/Woz/Coco
F: Halep/Pliskova/Kvitova/Muguruza

I think Ostapenko will be the one to make the SF from the bottom quarter but it's such a tough quarter to pick.

The bottom quarter is absolutely loaded: Ostapenko, Sharapova, Osaka, Mladenovic, Coco, Sevastova, Bertens, Barty, Gavrilova and Wozniacki.

I can see any single one of them making the SF.

Sharapova's a former champ, Osaka is the Indian Wells champ, Mladenovic was the finalist last year, Coco made the final in Stuttgart with three top 10 wins, Sevastova was a SFist last year, Bertens was a QFist last year and a RG SFist, Barty and Gavrilova a little less of a chance but who knows. And then there's Woz who as the 2nd seed you'd tip to be the fav but her clay record isn't great.

It's a minefield.

Petra will be tired. Not sure to even pass the 1R. She played 5 matches already in Prague.

Same with Mertens, who might be winning back to back in Rabat. Good news for Sharapova to play Buzarn who is in final at Praque.

Kvitova?

She might pulled out or will lose early

The one thing with Mugu is that she has never played well at this event. I will be watching all of her matches though.

The finalists in Prague face an extremely tough immediate turnaround for Madrid, as they are scheduled to play after 24 hours tomorrow:

7:30 am EST
Buzarnescu - Sharapova

4 hours later
Kvitova - Tsurenko

Gonna watch some of Kontaveit vs Venus. I have feeling that Kontaveit will hit too big for her, but who knows.

Well I didn’t see that coming for Ostapenko... She better get her **** together by the French Open or her ranking is going to hurt.

Watched Garcia’s match and she was playing very well against Domi.

Not shocked to see Venus lose to Kontaveit. Venus has skipped the last 2 Madrid tournaments and hasn’t done well there in a while.

Kiki beating Coco was a toss up but wasn’t expecting that scoreline. Mladenovic the defending finalist and likes clay so that’s always something to watch.

Anytime I see Gavrilova she's losing, but she's always ranked in the 20's. Where do these points come from?

Halep is destroying her opponent at Madrid as usual.

And I miss Konjuh real bad.

Sharapova and Buzarnescu warming up.

Dumb question: during the warmup they practice serve and the other player actually returns the serve. Is that new? I recall people always warming up their serve without any balls being hit back.
