You asked me what the marketer's dream is and I answered. You "know" what it is and yet for some reason, you wish to be in denial. Suit yourself. If you want to think Suarez Navarro is what sponsors go crazy over, fine with me. I live in the real world where Sharapova's, Wozniacki's, Ivanovic's are what the sponsors want.
Sponsors sell their product but WTA sells tennis. I don't mind if there is no dominating champion as long as there is good tennis for the sake of good tennis. Suarez has the bh, put that in the store window. Pliskova has a great smooth serve and ground strokes, put that in the store window too. Niculescu has her forehand slice. Osaka has her big heavy forehand. Kvitova has lightning shots. Lots of stuff to stock in the storefront. Selling swimsuits is a separate thing, tennis players don't look particularly good in that situation, they've been built to play tennis, taking their clothes off isn't their strong suit, so to speak. When Fed takes his shirt off, he looks pretty awful with that wasted left arm and dad's bod. I'd prefer he put it back on and play. Do we even need to mention Murray?
I don't know why you eeked when I said I liked the Dolgopolov vs Tsonga mini rivalry, that was a good matchup to watch. If you were paying attention to not just FedNadDjokRayStan, there was plenty of interesting ATP tennis to watch outside the big 5. Even if the big 5 were in all the final stages, they often didn't hold my interest. Fed vs Nad for years was so abused I came to dread that matchup. We see the consequences of the sport over relying on one, two stars. We've been drinking the punch for far too long to keep staving off the inevitable, knowing there is no Fed/Nad/Djok coming up. I'd like to see tennis sports broadened so it is not so reliant on mens and womens singles, but haven't many ideas on it. Even traditional doubles isn't popular, unless Hingis was playing.
In Taiwan, the two Chan sisters get the sponsor deals for obvious photogenic reasons, not Hsieh. But if I were promoting tennis, I'd promote Hsieh's stylish, unique game.
Besides all the skyscrapers, you do need the beautiful original architectures and grade listed buildings too. In that regard, WTA should be culturing and cultivating diversity and inventive games alongside the glamour and the power. Let the sponsors pick up whatever they want to promote their stuff, that too has its place. But let us not put the cart before the horse.
