I'm still not sure what the look is, but I think both of those players have it. Great match.

Great contest.

Didn't know this is already her 4th title of the season and that she is 2nd in the race now. Go Petra!

So happy that Petra won the title. Can’t think of a more deserving player than her.

Forever stunned at how she recovered from her terrible stabbing, she’s truly an incredible player.

Also well done to Bertens who’s had a great clay season so far. I’m disappointed I missed what seemed like quite the epic match! Almost 3 hours long!

Onto Rome now. I’ll do a thread up a bit later :)

Well done Kvitova. She's won quite a few titles this year.

Congrats to her on becoming the first female player to win 3 titles in Madrid (prev 2011 and 2015). Seems like she is fully recovered from her stabbing ordeal last year! :)

I'm impressed with Kvitova. She's slimmed down, moving elegantly and running way better than 4 years ago, she is much lighter on her feet, she isn't playing quite the same game anymore but she has adjusted, is more tactically sophisticated, playing different strokes and is going for controlling the rally now while reserving the winner. Beating Kasatkina easily is a big indication of her shift.

This is the sort of tennis match and great battle WTA needs to promote.

Kvitova's going to be number one this year.

But she wasn't stabbed. She had her dominant hand sliced open while defending herself from a knife intruder. And why haven't they caught him yet?

You know what that "certain look" is and what tends to be appealing globally. It's not rocket science. The WTA wants players who can win consistently, players who have charismatic personalities, and players who have some type of outward physical appeal. Sharapova has all of those things. Don't play dumb now!

Having a corporate mindset as I do is the only way to talk realistically when you're talking about a huge business(which tennis is first and foremost.) Thinking about it in any other terms is a waste of time.

You can't have everything you want you know!

That's been the problem the WTA has been having. Sure we've had slam winners outside of Serena/Sharapova in the past few years but do you really think Muguruza/Kerber/Azarenka/Kvitova bring in the numbers? (and I say that as somebody who likes most of those players but unfortunately they aren't huge draws for a variety of reasons.)

It's a problem for both the WTA and ATP, i.e. being fortunate enough to have players like Federer/Nadal/Serena/Sharapova, players who not only show outrageous consistency over years but attract sponsors and fans alike and having to deal with the pressure of finding new versions of those players.

Oh, right, the *nudge, nudge*, *wink, wink*, you know what the look is... I can't let my wife find out look. Is that what you mean? I seriously don't know what the look is, can you define some of the characteristics of this look? Is there a predominate hair color, nationality, height, eye color?? I mean, since you deal in marketing, you must be able to define these metrics, that's what people in marketing do. Whip out your spreadsheet and get to work, it's Saturday!!

That Sharapova, attractive with blonde hair, light eyes and over 6' would be a marketer's dream as long as she was winning titles consistently, was a no-brainer. Is that specific enough for you? ;)

You asked me what the marketer's dream is and I answered. You "know" what it is and yet for some reason, you wish to be in denial. Suit yourself. If you want to think Suarez Navarro is what sponsors go crazy over, fine with me. I live in the real world where Sharapova/Wozniacki/Ivanovic type players are what the sponsors want.

Sponsors sell their product but WTA sells tennis. I don't mind if there is no dominating champion as long as there is good tennis for the sake of good tennis. Suarez has the bh, put that in the store window. Pliskova has a great smooth serve and ground strokes, put that in the store window too. Niculescu has her forehand slice. Osaka has her big heavy forehand. Kvitova has lightning shots. Lots of stuff to stock in the storefront. Selling swimsuits is a separate thing, tennis players don't look particularly good in that situation, they've been built to play tennis, taking their clothes off isn't their strong suit, so to speak. When Fed takes his shirt off, he looks pretty awful with that wasted left arm and dad's bod. I'd prefer he put it back on and play. Do we even need to mention Murray?

I don't know why you eeked when I said I liked the Dolgopolov vs Tsonga mini rivalry, that was a good matchup to watch. If you were paying attention to not just FedNadDjokRayStan, there was plenty of interesting ATP tennis to watch outside the big 5. Even if the big 5 were in all the final stages, they often didn't hold my interest. Fed vs Nad for years was so abused I came to dread that matchup. We see the consequences of the sport over relying on one, two stars. We've been drinking the punch for far too long to keep staving off the inevitable, knowing there is no Fed/Nad/Djok coming up. I'd like to see tennis sports broadened so it is not so reliant on mens and womens singles, but haven't many ideas on it. Even traditional doubles isn't popular, unless Hingis was playing.

In Taiwan, the two Chan sisters get the sponsor deals for obvious photogenic reasons, not Hsieh. But if I were promoting tennis, I'd promote Hsieh's stylish, unique game.

Besides all the skyscrapers, you do need the beautiful original architectures and grade listed buildings too. In that regard, WTA should be culturing and cultivating diversity and inventive games alongside the glamour and the power. Let the sponsors pick up whatever they want to promote their stuff, that too has its place. But let us not put the cart before the horse.

The men's game and women's game need big-time players like Federer, Nadal, Serena, Sharapova, etc. to help promote the sport. It's just the way it is. This kid Shapovalov has that "it" factor and if he can keep his head on straight and win things, he can be a great asset for the ATP. What I'm saying isn't rocket science. But I always look at things from the corporate perspective. I don't live in Disney World.

I wouldn't dispute you on Shapovalov, I haven't had enough information to form an opinion. How about this; you need a a broad range of players to promote the sport, not focussing on the megastars you defined earlier (consistency, looks etc). Consider : there are as many tennis styles as tennis players, and there are as many tennis fans as tennis styles. That is what the sport should perhaps be going for. If you only have one sort of player, Fed or Sharapova, you get exactly one kind of fan. Bad ecosystem. Lack of diversity will lead to mass extinction, which is what we seem to be faced with now (on the ATP side)
