As a follow-up comment I made earlier, I think the WTA is totally aware that sex sells their sport. They did marketing a couple years ago where they had players do a video/photo shoot. They put on a ton of makeup and make all of these absurd poses that had little to do with tennis. It's sad but true, but they exploit that aspect of it in order to sell it. Billie Jean, what's your take? On the one hand, they want to grow the sport, but at what cost?

Not to me at any rate. It is more off putting than anything. It doesn't sell to fans of tennis but only to fans looking for that. If I were WTA, I'd concentrate on selling tennis to core tennis fans and shut the door to the other type of customer which I wouldn't want. Besides, tennis players, men or women with the body builds they require to fight and survive the brutal long tour battles, tend to make pretty poor models, compared to professional models.

I mean, as a marketeer, you have to know the values of your product. Never alienate your core customers by trying to sell to the wrong type of customer. I believe Steve Jobs knew all about this.

Yeah I don't entirely get it either. I do think she and her team made a boneheaded decision to keep using this drug after it was banned, but it was legal until then, and she was not alone in using it.

Meanwhile, Sharapova got one break back, and gives it up again in the next service game. Bertens up 4*-1

The tour needs her. Idk, but she adds excitement to the game. It's nice just to see some veterans around, especially one as big as she is.

Important time for Bertens to win some much needed points.

Next week she has SF points to defend in Rome (350 points) and then the following week she has the Nuremberg title (280 points).

I can't believe Halep will be number 1 with:
0 Grand Slams titles
0 Premier Mandatory titles
0 Premier 5 titles
0 Premier titles
1 International title

She makes Safina, the old Wozniacki and Jankovic look like tennis queens.

Are you for real? If they did that, they'd go bankrupt! They want women players who are globally appealing. It's a business and a big business ffs! You don't have to like Sharapova but she's a female player who doesn't look like something the cat dragged in and she puts arses in seats. That's the name of the game.

The 4 ladies in the SF are going really well lately.

Pliskova on a 9 match winning streak after winning Stuttgart and now in the Madrid SF.
Kvitova also on a 9 match winning streak after winning Prague and now in the Madrid SF.
Garcia has won 7 of her last 8 matches after making the Stuttgart SF and now in the Madrid SF.
Bertens has won 10 of her last 11 matches after winning Charleston, losing 1R in Stuttgart to Pliskova and now in the Madrid SF.

It is a huge marketing mistake to sell to people who aren't really your customers and to try to be everything to everybody without being original. Companies who do that usually wind up out of business.

It is unusual players like Suarez, Hsieh with singular styles and personalities whom they should be promoting alongside their big stars.

Ever seen Sharapova model next to professional models? Of course, it works the other way, Miranda Kerr wouldn't look good playing tennis. If you are selling swimsuits, sell swimsuits; if you are selling tennis, sell tennis, but you have to stick to the nucleus of your product.

We are usually in full and complete disagreement.

BTW, how is the Zed/Lendl thing we had a word on working out? Lendl knows he has good advice to offer and he know the value of his advice. He doesn't need to waste his time and energy, a limited resource, trying to pillow fight this California surfer dude with his golden mop (and none too much underneath it) into being convinced of doing things his way. He will take his counsel where it is really appreciated.

No, it isn't. Tennis is a global sport and it's entertainment like the movie business. They have to have appealing players to promote the sport and appeal to populations internationally. You're talking like it's some mom and pop business. You've got it all wrong about how the marketing should work IMO. Thankfully, the ATP andWTA knows what to do(if they could only get winning and appealing players!) and won't listen to your cockemamy ideas about tennis marketing!

Suarez as in Suarez Navarro? She's unmarketable unless you are catering to a conference made up of androgynous individuals! As for Hsieh, let her win some big tournaments first.

Yes, and she looks pretty good to me. Compare her to some of the bow-wows on tour.

If you are selling swimsuits, sell swimsuits; if you are selling tennis, sell tennis, but you have to stick to the nucleus of your product.

Again, tennis is entertainment. It has to sell and promote its players who have the ability to win big titles and who have the package of charisma, a certain look, etc. If you were in charge of the ATP, it would go out of business in a month!

How do you know Lendl won't work with Zverev? Did Lendl and Zverev tell you their future plans? Zverev is precisely the type of player Lendl would work with. Let's see what transpires.

I don't get your point about the appealing thing. Do you mean swimsuits? Underwear? That kind of thing? We seem to be at cross purposes here. Do you mean that to sell tennis, you have to sell non tennis? You might end up selling everything but tennis. The only thing worse than Sharapova modelling is Wozniacki singing. Do you want more of that? They should definitely stick to their day job. Imo the reason why Sharapova, pre 2016 at least, had star power was her court fight, not her looks. She was just interesting as a player, even if you weren't rooting for her or if you didn't like her style, she could make a match interesting, at least in those days.

Androgynous individuals or otherwise can also appreciate Suarez's tennis and backhand. I really don't mind if players don't win big events. That isn't all tennis is about. A few big stars in the FedNadDjok way winning for long stretches so tt can argue over who is greater. There is much more to see than that. In the FedNadDjok days, I was more interested in the Dolgopolov/Tsonga matchup. For instance I don't think Hsieh is the kind who has the physical capital to dominate a whole big heavy event like a Premier or Mandatory. She is very talented and unusual, but doesn't have the endurance and power to match it. Or else she would be nearly unplayable. A player like her will however on occasion play a number of good matches with lots of good tennis and will upset a big player or two, which is what I hope to see, regardless of whether she wins or not.

About Lendl/Z, I never said that Lendl wouldn't work with Z, only that I don't think it is worth it for Lendl. As usual, we exchange our views, disagree, and see how events unfolds.

Pliskova's coach told her, she should play faster, that she is only pushing and waiting for errors and that is not a way to win this, that she should be more agressive
