Loaded top 10 players in Brisbane (Muguruza, Pliskova, Svitolina, Garcia (retired on 1R), and Konta)
Shenzhen has Halep and Ostapenko with a twist of Maria
Auckland has Wozniacki but watch out for Goerges and A-Rad.

Happy new year and let the tennis begin!

Was hoping Caro Garcia would have a good start to the season in Brisbane but that wretched lower back issue seems to have started up again. Looked like she was doing good prep work in her pre-season training. Hopefully it will settle.

Looking forward to Ash Barty's first match of the season on Monday.

My girl Konjuh smashing Bertens yesterday. I hope it will be her breakthrough year and having similar if not better like Ostapenko in her 20!

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been posting, volunteering at the tournament again this year so it's keeping me pretty busy.

Really enjoying it so far, sad that Sloane and Kvitova withdrew as I was looking forward to seeing them but still heaps on offer.

New year new Mladenovic. Wins the first set 6-1 over Sasnovich.

Looking to overturn that 12 match losing streak. Funnily enough, Sasnovich was one of the opponents she lost to during the streak.

Mladenovic looking so solid and outplaying Sasnovich even though Sasnovich beat her just a few months ago. She did have to come through 3 qualifying matches.

Speaking of losing streaks, Konta is up next on the main arena up against Madison Keys. Konta has surprisingly lost 5 in a row, looking to overturn that against the US Open finalist.

Big turnaround. Mladenovic now lacking confidence and about to lose the 2nd set, obviously the 12 straight losses are on her mind. Sasnovich meanwhile is such a fighter, can tell she thinks she's still in this even though she lost six straight games in the first set. What a trooper.

And Sasnovich wins the second set. Kiki has gone AWOL.

Sasnovich wins. 6th seed Mladenovic is out and she's now on a 13 match losing streak.

Keys wins the first set over Konta 6-4. Crazy that Keys v Konta is a 1R. Could easily be a slam semifinal.

Konta just far too good.

Beats Keys in a fantastic match, wins 4-6 6-4 6-3. Turns around her 5 match losing streak and cements herself as a real threat at the upcoming Aus Open. She's made the SF's there before and that performance was fantastic, watch out.

Keys played very well, her wrist is better then it ever was but Konta was just too good.

Tomjlanovic v Konta is a great 2R. Ajla easily beat Aiava yesterday and is looking good after being out for quite a while with injuries and surgery.

Oh cool, apparently that's tomorrow night on the main arena which is when I have my tickets so i'll get to see that live.

Kontaveit blistering the ball and races past Watson 6-0 6-3. Finished the year very well and is on track for a good 2018.

It would be pretty classic if the player that Seven has been hyping to high heaven with constant 15 second action clips goes out in the first round.
They'll have next to no Aussies left, they'll have to start hyping Ajla up even though she's still under the Croatian flag at WTA tournaments.

Ash only has a handful of losses to a player outside the top 25 in the last 12 months. Barthel at the AO, Ostapenko in Rome and Sloane(!) during the US Open.

Tsurenko makes 4 in a big upset.

Anyone see Halep? Is she change her forehand or something? Some power from what I see in the highlights. Still can't drop shot and planted on baseline tho.

Didn't know about Jankovic, quite crazy when you consider 2 years later she was number 1 in the world.

Alexandra made a couple of mistakes in both sets but it back on serve in the second. Krunic has alway been a player that you have to beat! She does not fold, usually! A Justine Henin type of player that will keep coming!

Better now than in Melbourne...dunno what to think of these cramps though, or the fact that she gave up break lead in set 2 (twice i think?).

I didn’t know Mizuno made tennis shoes, is Krunic wearing running shoes?

Yeah, she was up two breaks in 2nd set. But she looked very sluggished.

Having said that, Krunic played some amazing competitive tennis. Really enjoyed Set 1 and a half.
