Halep just lost the first set 6-3 to Duan Ying-Ying in Shenzhen. If she loses this match, Wozniacki can become #1 with the Auckland title on Monday.

Halep scrapes through against Ying meaning she will remain #1 this week and will be the top seed at the Australian Open. Her first time being a top seed at a slam.

Stubbsy commentating the Pliskova-Bellis match. Really interesting cause she coached her for those 2 weeks at the WTA Finals. She says she was very lovely and took everything she said in like a sponge. Really wants a slam. Nothing new but interesting to hear from Stubbsy's perspective.

Yeah, Konta is hitting all her marks and serving really well. I thought Svitolina would be favored going into it... But, let's see how this second set goes.

Yeah, this second set is more even. I hope it stays this way - I was looking forward to a great match. I don't think Pliskova - Kanepi is going to provide that.

Is that fresh ink on Svitolina's left leg? I don't recall seeing that last year.

Well now it seems hard to see anyone other than Woz and Rad winning Auckland if it fines up tonight and the rest of the week as they would avoid playing 2 matches in one day as the players on the other side of the draw would have to...

Off-court MTO in Brisbane. I like the intensity of this match. Sometimes these MTOs can ice the other player and Svitolina felt like she had the momentum after winning the second set.

4th time actually.

Shame about the injury, Sumyk could have been more encouraging than telling her to stop complaining.
It's possibly the best way to deal with her?
I've seen clips of her on-court coaching where her coach has offered tactical advice and she's rejected it. On one occasion her coach told her to lift the ball more to cut down on her errors and get back in the match, she replied that "she didn't feel like it".
So maybe the direct approach is better for her?

2012 champ Kaia Kanepi taking it to 2017 champ Karolina Pliskova. Up 2-0 on the first.

Kanepi only returned from injury in June, made an ITF final, made the US Open QF as a qualifier, qualified for Premier Moscow, won another ITF title and a few other results. She fought back from the low rankings and played the small stuff, even after making a slam QF! Impressive.

Kanepi with neck, a thigh, wrist and more all taped up. She's really had it rough with injuries but when she's on, man she's on.

Sevastova through over Krunic in straight sets. Either Sevastova or Sanovich will be in the final. Big opportunity for one of them. Sevastova so quietly under the radar, top 20, back to back US Open QF's yet never spoken about.

I hope she hangs in there. Brisbane has already lost Muguruza, Kvitova, local Barty and other big names. They don't need Pliskova being knocked out by Kanepi. I don't mean any offence to Kanepi, but she's not a player your average casual fan is going to care about.

Kanepi is supposed to be playing quallies in Sydney but the commentators were saying she might be better off pulling out and resting, given she's played a lot of matches here and her leg is heavily taped.

Wasn't she announced as a speaker at a conference in the US taking place during the Open? If she's not coming, she should be upfront about it.
Yeah but she's done that before I believe. I have a feeling she won't play to be honest. Hope i'm wrong. Draws wide open if she's out though, fingers crossed for Pliskova!

I don't think she'll play either. Her baby isn't even five months! But then again she won AO last year while pregnant so ordinary rules don't apply to her.

I was convinced Pliskova was going to win last year, especially after Serena's poor showing in Auckland, so maybe it will be her year this time.

So which one of the semifinalists has shown the most? Couldn't catch anything due to the time zones.

I hope Eli won't go just majoring in minors for another year.

I haven't seen Pliskova play yet, but Svitolina is looking very sharp. Can she maintain that intensity for 2 more matches? We'll see. Sevastova has also been solid, hasn't dropped a set.

Not looking good in Auckland. Lots of rain and they still have to play QF's, SF's and the final. Looks like it'll be played Sunday which could impact anyone wanting to play Sydney. Also could be an issue as the mens tournament kicks off this week too.

Pliskova has played very well. Bit off in her first set against Kanepi but was on fire against Bellis. Svitolina was VERY lucky to escape Konta who was thrashing her in the first set and was on serve in the 3rd set before she had to retire. I'm very excited for Svitolina/Pliskova. Could go either way. I expect the winner of that to win the title but Sevastova is so far under the radar. Easy to forget.

Brisbane SF's:

(7) Sevastova v (Q) Sasnovich
(3) Svitolina v (2) Pliskova

Shenzhen SF'S:

(1) Halep v (4) Begu
Sharapova v (6) Siniakova

Auckland QF's:

(1) Wozniacki v (WC) Kenin
(4) Radwanska v (Q) Vickery
Hsieh v (3) Strycova
Hercog v (2) Gorges

Sydney's player list is looking good.

Muguruza, Venus, Ostapenko, Konta, Mladenovic, Sloane, Gorges and Pavlycuhenkova.

Wildcards to Muguruza and Aussies Rogowska, Perez and Stosur.

Other players: Barty, Kerber, Strycova, Kasatkina, Radwanska, Kvitova(?), Vesnina and more!

Qualifying is stacked! Makarova, Kontaveit, Suarez Navarro, Davis, Sakkari, Puig, Giorgi, Bellis and more.

Hobart is better than past years with Zhang Shuai, Mertens, Cirstea, Cornet etc. Fourlis and Bouchard(!) have been given a WC.

Bouchard comes through again! Yes!

Serena out of the US Open. Sad but not surprising considering she only gave birth a couple months ok.

Not surprising at all. A return for the Sunshine double maybe?

I also wouldn't be surprised if this year's AO goes to a first-time winner. Pliskova, Halep and Woz are all in the running.

I think the expectation is that it will go to a first timer. As you said, Pliskova Halep and Wozniacki but also Konta, Svitolina and Garcia. There won't be many slam champs in the draw with Serena and Kuzy out and a cloud over Azarenka and Kvitova. Only leaves: Venus, Ostapenko, Sharapova, Sloane, Muguruza, Kerber, Stosur and I believe Schiavone isn't retiring after all. You can write off Stosur and Schiavone as potential champs. The others possibly but yeah, seems definitely like it'll be a newbie.

Are only Sharapova and Azarenka former AO champs that may be in the draw? If so thats possibly a record - only two former champs in a major draw?

Don't forget about the girl you hate (Kerber) ;) but Azarenka is a question mark so could just be 2.

I think last years Wimbledon had just two anyway after Sharapova and Serena didn't play. Only two would've been Venus and Kvitova I believe.

Completely forgot about Kerber! But then so has tennis ;)
I wonder what's the record for least previous champions in a draw?
