2018 YE Ratings Hype Thread

Well its that time of the year, 2019 league recruiting is in full swing. With Nationals winding down, we are nearly a month away ( Mon Dec 3rd? ) from discovering our rating fate.

Does everyone remember the rating "COUNTDOWN" clock last year. What a debacle. The clock expired, ratings were not published. The clock reset. Then some ratings were out but not entirely. What a great idea, until it failed. Will this rating countdown clock become an annual timer? And how about not setting the "timer" to Midnight EST. How about a normal time of the day for us east coast folks.

Any YE'18 bold ratings predictions?

Prediction: Based on tennislink's new update, they have installed a widget on your device. Widget measures how much time you spend on tennisrecord. Your final YE rating will be adjusted based on the amount of time you spend on TR. If you are a woman, more than 5 minutes a week and your rating will drop, if you are a man, more than 5 minutes and you are getting bumped up.

Sorry I'm new to all this. But if I play in a 40+ men's league in the winter, then 18+ men's league in the spring, that's the only thing that counts towards my rating right? I play MXD, but supposedly that doesn't count. If I'm not playing in any of these one-singles and one-doubles or tournaments, then I shouldn't expect anything different than what I see on TLS?

Always believe everything you see on TLS. take it to the bank.

Everything on TLS is correct except their calculated ratings.

On whether Spring is the only league that counts for your rating depends on where you play. Where I play both Fall leagues and Spring leagues count.

Praying I stay in 3.5. Tennis record says 3.4891. UTR 6.

In calendar year 2018 so far (USTA league and Sanctioned tourneys) I went 17-3 in singles (One 3rd set tiebreak loss to #1 3.5 singles player in TX, one 5-7 6-7 match against an undefeated UTR 7 at 3.5 sectionals and 1 retirement at sectionals cause my team already wrapped up 3 lines and I had to play again in 1 hr in the heat).

8-1 in dubs (1 bad loss to the TX sectionals runner up).

Think I'll get bumped to 4.0?

Come join the squad next year !
I actually am looking to join a 4.5 team in your city next year. I was pretty upset with how few matches I got to play this year. I blinked and my year was over.

4.0 is TBD. 50/50 chance I get bumped down, but I'm not sure how much 4.0 I'll want to play if it happens.

I will probably stay 4.0...I’m hoping I get bumped down only because I can play more than one league a week since I’m not over 39 yet.

I kind of believe this. I looked at my TR dynamic rating and it was 3.37 and projected to get bumped down. I go to appeal my rating to go down (denied) and then check TR a week later and I’m at 3.51

I'm sure they fix their "misses" after ratings are published so that is all that happened here. But they were off by a full 0.14 (if not more) so that is a pretty big miss.

Note I do the same corrections when I do miss with my estimates, if I have someone at 3.50 or lower and they are a 4.0, I move their rating up into 4.0 range, but very rarely miss by that much.

Are you 40 and can you get to NJ? I have a 4.0 40+ team that lost sectionals by one court. I just need one or two ringers. You just have to play the minimum in the regular season and then districts/sectionals.

Not sure if your question has been answered yet so I'll answer it.

It all depends.

New to USTA; this is my first season. I self-rated at 4.0. I'm 3-1 on the season so far playing D1. TR has me at 4.16; UTR at 6.96. No idea what to expect as far as year end rating. I don't really want to get bumped and have to find a new team.

Both of those ratings are well into 4.5 territory.

However, with only 4 matches, those rating sties are going to be very inaccurate, and USTA NTRP is also going to be pretty rough, so who knows what'll happen.

@schmke after the official ratings come out do you do bump reports with a list of everyone who went up or down in an area?

Would be a huge timesaver.

I can and have done so for a number of people looking to do recruiting and can obviously include where I have them rated to boot including. In fact, I have a recruiting report that gives a great summary of a player's record in singles vs doubles and in each of 18+, 40+, 55+, plus what their average match rating is in each of those categories. This can be a great tool to determine more about how a player performs and if they are a good fit for a team.

Yea, I'm hoping USTA doesn't put that much stock into the over-inflated rating and keeps me at 4.0. I'd probably be fine playing D3 at 4.5, but like I said, I just don't want to have to deal with finding a new team. I just freaking got on this one, haha.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Fewer matches won't keep you from getting bumped if they have you over the threshold. But it does give you a better chance at automatically appealing back down if you're insistent on staying at 4.0.

No way to tell. That isn’t how the ratings work.

Good to know, thanks. Both sites updated since my last post. TR 4.08; UTR 7.04. Captain on my USTA team seems to think we'll be able to appeal me back to 4.0 if I bump. I know I'll eventually have to move up, but I'd like to get at least one Spring season under my belt at 4.0 before that happens.

TR is just an estimate that can be significantly inaccurate fairly often, but if you really are 4.08 in the USTA calculation as well, that is outside the appealable range.

There's no way to see what your actual USTA rating is though, right? Like down to the hundredths like TR?

I looked at tennisrecord for my team today. I don't know what's going on with that site, but the ratings don't line up with my eyeballs at all. It's not quite as bad as "take the list and reverse it to get actual playing level" but it's pretty close.

If they just did it with the days ... and didn't attempt hours, minutes, seconds ... that would be the smart choice :)

If they just came out and said we are trying the best we can but we just aren't very good this so it will get done some time during the first week of December I'd have no problem.
