Nishikori-Medvedev 6:4, 3:6, 6:2
Nishikori lost one of the his breaks, but Medvedev lost his service again (even a clean game) and Kei won the ATP tournament after three years!

Good start, Nishi will probably play 5 3 set matches in Melbourne, and then in SF lose to Djokovic or Federer, 1-6, 3-6, 2-6

Good match with some very nice crisp hitting.

The conditions is Brisbane seem more in line with what we will get at AO compared to what we saw in Doha IMO

Putin’s supposed to be low key sexy, you know.

Meanwhile, #lostgen antithesis Milos Raonic has not won a tournament since Brisbane 2016. However his final loss streak is only 6.

Wow, am really impressed by how Medvedev played. He's going to be handful for everybody moving forward. When I saw him a couple of years ago (circa the infamous default vs Young at Savannah) I thought that his style was too "flail-y" to be consistent. Now, I honestly think he has a better BH than all the new guys except Zverev/Coric and he looks like he can absolutely vaporize the ball on the forehand when it sets up high enough.

I feel like I overlooked him in the juniors because he never cracked the top 10 there. Evidence enough that some styles of play require more physical/mental maturity before they can come into their own and truly maximize their potential.

Congrats to Nishikori on finally breaking his duck of losing ATP Finals and winning his 1st title in almost 3 years (since 2016 Memphis)! He wins title #12, 6th at 250 level and becomes the 2nd top #10 ranked player to win an ATP title in 2019 (following Anderson in Pune).

Clearly nobody beats Kei Nishikori in ATP Finals 10 times in a row!

Saw the results. I am so happy for Kei that he finally put an end to the losing streak in finals. Hope he remains healthy and goes deep in Masters/Majors this year.

The point of the thread is to post Putin gifs, not discuss Medvedev, silly.

He to me is kinda like a Cilic type of guy. Very dangerous and could grab a big one if conditions are right.

What are the chances of the ball falling out of your pocket in the middle of a rally twice during a match? You only lose a point if it happens twice, first time it's a replay. I think it should just be the one time....

Anyway, congrats to Kei, he was figuring out Medvedev's serving patterns a lot more comfortably in this match. Great 3rd set especially, depth to the Medvedev forehand causing all sorts of problems...

Which player had the ball fall out of their pocket?

Hard to tell, because against the real top guys - the big 3/4 - Kei just hasn't had the firepower. He can certainly demolish anyone below that level when he plays well.

But now Fed's old, Nadal's maybe injured, Murray's just starting his comeback.... if Djokovic falters Kei could certainly grab his chance.

Nishikori should have a decent chance against anyone but Djokovic. Can't see 2014 us open repeating after their last 10 or so matches.

As long as Nishikori doesn't have to face Djokovic and he doesn't waste too many sets a long the way, his chances should be almost as good as any other non big 3 player. For reference, he has only lost to the champions at the last 4 hard court slams he has played.

Long awaited title win.
Tense match for Nishikori fans. At 0-3 in the first set was afraid of yet another loss.
He can go far at AO with a good draw.
