2019 ATP250 Sydney - General Discussion

Literally the only way I can get you to picture what it's like here at the moment is to get you to imagine being followed at all times by two overexcited people who, every two minutes, say some variation of "Oh my god how's that from [name of player you dislike]", "What a fighter", "Such incredible relentless spirit", "A brave, wily defender".

Focus Seppi, this lapse at the start of the 2nd is disheartening. First serve % is still crap.

It's interesting seeing Seppi looking clearly flustured out there...

It loses it's humor when the quality is outstanding. A low first serve percentage is probably the only thing Seppi can improve on.

You don't like De Minaur because of commies or his game?
I think he's easy to overrate cause he suddenly got good results last year, but for me he's not particularly exciting, the foundation for a top player isn't there, and I think he totally has the making of a perennial top 15 player and pidgeon to Slam champions.

I don't understand the hype, and I don't really care for the mannerisms.

He's literally just a reskin of Borna Coric. Complete with zero weapons and a propensity to celebrate opponent mistakes. At least Borna had some quality wins to his name.

A Coric-lite, then. Even worse. Best thing you can say for De Minaur is that he's going to make a lot of top players happy in the future when they see that he's the seed they drew.
Pretty much.

Any player who can both grind and clobber the ball when they need to should never lose to him. Zverev should go like 15-0 vs ADM over the course of his career.

His strength is his speed obviously, but he lacks power and gets blasted off the court by Nadal etc.
But if he puts on weight to gain some power, he's going to lose that speed.

Just cannot stand the commentators fingering their belly buttons while making animal noises over him

It just blows my mind that someone as talented and hardworking as Julian Benneteau can go his whole career without winning a title but De Minaur can grab one facing at best the world no. 31, and Simon didn't even want to be on the court.

There is something there with ADM. It seems like he doesn't have weapons but he is already winning ATP titles at 19 years of age. The guy has so much time to work on his game and develop. This is not a finished product wich some of you make it out to be.

de Minaur-Seppi 7:5, 7:6(5)
Both had several mini-breaks in the TB, both created errors, eventually having a little better nerves Alex and getting his first ATP career title! I'm so happy for Alex! :)(y)

Never beaten someone ranked inside top 20 yet has an ATP title

that has to be a first

You can only beat the players you come up against though, so he is a deserving winner in syd

Surprised the organisers were saying 'see you next year'. I was under the impression this would be the last? In this form at least

agree. full stop, have to give credit here. speed is a real weapon both in defense and the subsequent over-thinking it causes on the other side of the net. one of the reasons djokovic does so well against nadal is his defense makes nadal press and takes him outsides his comfort zone. how many times have we seen players bail after 10-15 shots against nadal and try something crazy? djokovic gives nadal that taste of his own medicine. takes skill to do it of course, and i'm not suggesting novak is mostly passive against him. but he does take away a lot of those easy error points nadal generates against most of the tour.

Very undeserved time violation warning for Seppi on set point. He was waiting for the crowd to finish. Glad it's not Carlos on the chair. I wouldn't even be on his side if it was him. Lol
Crazy.
Umpire with no clue of what is a momentum in a tennis match. Crowd making noise, Seppi just saved 2 set points, and ref calls time violation warning. What's up with this umpy?

A combination of being an extremely scrambly, grinding player, celebrations after unforced errors that would seem more fitting for actually winning the match, and on top of all that the Commentators.

You might not think it's so bad, but in Australia I don't just have to suffer this kind of blind patriotic fervor during his matches. Every tv break I get to watch Adobe after effects videos of De Minaur shouting while his racquet catches fire. The entirity of the Australian media is shoving this kid down my throat 24/7, talking about him like he's not only a future world no. 1, but already the most exciting thing in tennis. It's enough to make anyone sick.

The Demon has a new weapon especially on these Australian surfaces that take flat shots so well; the walk through forehand. Already hitting close to 150kph the great thing about it is he doesn't have to hit a winner. His quick timing gets the ball heading back to the opponent early so even a hard one down the middle will often open up the point rushing the opponent into a bad shot.

Three weapons now:
1. Speed
2. Tenacity
3. Forehand

Close enough to Hewitt to start thinking about slams as the Demon is now a very fine player off clay.

He's getting a little more out of his 1st serve and his average forehand rally ball. I remember him talking about these aspects in some interview not so long ago, looking for improvements in those two areas specifically.
