2019 ATP250 Sydney - General Discussion

For me, this field is a bit less interesting than ATP250 Auckland.

I'm interested in seeing how Tsitsipas will do after his breakout last season
(did pretty well at Hopman Cup2019). Will Medvedev carry his already/still good form from Brisbane/2018?

First 'official' match for BigFoe after a dismal 0-3 in singles at Hopman Cup2019. Tiafoe's 1R will be against John Millman, a real test.

How do you find out when acutal players are playing their first round matches? Want to watch de Minaur’s first match but not sure if it will be Monday or tuesday

Carlos Ramos is umpiring in Sydney! What a huge pleasant surprise! Never thought a top of the cream umpire like himself will ever come to one of the most neglected ATP tournaments. I’m keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that I’ll bump into him today or any time this week!

Taro Daniel with all the luck. With Medvedev's withdrawl he becomes a lucky loser for the second time in two weeks.
Both times with the added perk of a first round bye.

Honestly think Medvedev is the one to beat. He's red hot right now and should carry over his form from Brisbane into this tournament.

Had a great time at the tournament today. Tsitsipas was so polite and nice when surrounded by kids for signature after his practice. Rublev was very patient too but he just won comprehensively against Pouille. Tiafoe however, had a group of about 10 kids, my son included waited for him in the hot sun for 15 minutes and he came out from practice, signed about 3 and left without saying a word. I'm really unimpressed. Honestly from this I think it's safe to judge these players background and upbringing.

I was also lucky enough to meet Carlos Ramos and talked to him briefly!

Diego gladly signed for us too before his practice. His height on his profile is 170cm. I'm 170 and hes definitely shorter than me. Just an incredible player in this regard. Same goes for Nishioka. He beat Harrison in such a convincing fashion last night. It was such pleasure to watch court side. His athleticism is superb

Tiafoe loses in a typically Tiafoe way. With a totally bungled volley. Seriously, watching him do anything touch related on a tennis court is like watching one of these guys:

Fantastic performance by Millman to beat Tiafoe. Millman wasn't well going into the match but stood up better than Tiafoe who visibly tired late in the match.

De Minaur with another really challenging match against a near top 100 opponent. I'm not watching so you'll have to fill me in on how it's just too good from De Minaur that Opelka can't keep two balls in the court in a row.

What happened?

See my earlier post. A small group of kids waited for him for 15 mins in the hot sun for signatures after his practice today. He came out and signed for about 3 and left really impatiently. Safe to say he lost a few fans today

Watching Giorgi vs. Kerber match and Kerber got out of a 1st set point and got into a tiebreaker, won it. Giorgi trying to recover but Kerber seems to have the mental edge. It is 2-2 in the second set!

Nice win from Millman, such a scrappy player with good fighting abilities. From Tomic and Kyrgios all the way to Millman and ADM. That's quite the spectrum there...

It appears that Tsitsipas will enter 2019 wearing the same ill-fitting shortpants that he wore during his breakout 2018 campaign.

I knew Tpas would be nice

Wow so he is even shorter than 170!
Wonder if he is the shortest player top 100?

Did you watch?

I'll chime in. Tpas was crushing Andreozzi until 6-3 5-1... then returned 1of2 breaks when serving for the match at 5-2, but created 2MPs at 5-3* 40-15. Then Tpas was 2 points from letting Andreozzi level when again serving for the match at 5-4 30-30. Needed anther 3MPs in this game to close it out.

So Tpas was commanding most of the match, but almost allowed a fight. Good first match, but needs a bit more focus when leading, going forward.

At least he closed it out in 2 sets.
Sounds good though! Not strange lacking a bit of focus that early in the tournament
Vamos TPas, or how is this said in Greek?

That tiebreak in the De Minaur match was terrible lol.

Embarrassingly bad. And like clockwork on the last point of the match when Opelka flubbed a dead easy volley, the commentator cried out "How about the return!"

Yes. De Minaur got a return into the court four shots earlier. It was a bad return off a serve that was no bigger than any of the others Opelka had hit, and Opelka hit an approach shot right down the middle of the court. What the actual f**k am I meant to be impressed by. Seriously, look at where the return landed.

It wasn't even slice. It was a topspin bunt. Any tennis professional should have been able to put it away for a winner. But he didn't, and so we got to listen to the commentators talk about how talented and brave and inspiring De Minaur is.

Opelka would be a good tennis player if he wasn't a useless lunk and his serve was actually a weapon. At his height, he should be hitting 25+ aces per match, not 17.

LOL, it is unwatchable at times, just cringe inducing verbal diarrhea.
I wish someone would do a Roy & H.G style commentary of the Australian Open, that you can play over the top of the official coverage

Gilles will have to go through a couple of home crowd favourites if he wants to make the final. Millman in the QF and a potential SF against eithet ADM or Thompson.

Yeah that kind of commentary is extremely off putting and makes me only more likely to root against a player.

I just looked at a few matches, but his ace count is much lower than Karlovic/Isner/Kyrgios. And he plays against weaker competition.
It's 18% now, and he had higher in both his Auckland matches. 22% vs De Minaur, who isn't a weak returner.

It all depends on what you expect from him. He's not gonna win Slams. But he'll most certainly be a fixture in the top 50 and a pain in the ass.

If he wants to hang with the top 50, he has to be playing servebot TB tennis. And his serve isn't enough to get him to TBs consistently. And Karlovic and Isner both broke top 20/10.
