90% of players his age had four (or three, depending on your appreciation of Murray) ATG type of players completely dominating GS events for more than a decade, an entire generation of players getting lost with lackluster achievements due to that domination, and the whole media expecting for them to be that one player to finally (!) end the domination those four (or three) players after all those years?

Nah. They had it tough, but not this much. And that's without mentioning the changes the game has had, which have made older players have an advantage they never used to have in the past.
