That's a bomb of a 2R. My tickets for the week should cover this one, I'll definitely show up

Tsonga once said, jokingly or not, that Novak had ruined his life. Well. Tsonga at his age and with his usual weight, can hardly keep up with Novak in a long match. It would be a high-quality match. But unless Tsonga wraps up the match in 3 (what odds against Novak), I see Novak winning.

At the start of the season, I looked forward to the return of these big boys from injury break, Murray, Stan, Berdych, and Tsonga. Now that Murray is out of the race, I still have high hopes for the other three, especially Berdych, who is playing surprisingly well and smart.

If Tsonga is to have a chance, at Djokovic's favorite Slam, he's going to have to just blow Novak off the court. 5 sets would give Djoker a chance to get his teeth into the match, and Tsonga can't afford that. He needs to take Novak out of his rhythm right away and not let up, winning in 3 (or a 4th-set TB) is the only path to victory I see for him.

Djokovic's loss to RBA had shades of 2016 in it, I'm not totally sold on the theory that he's going to have another 2014-15 stretch.
I wasn't aware anyone had said he will.

Novak in 3 or 4 seems reasonable at this stage, looking forward to seeing it. It's on very late tomorrow evening so perfect time to watch here.

Tough draw for both of them, but particularly for Tsonga. He has beaten Djokovic only once (not counting Paris 2011 WO) since that win in 2010 AO, and that was 4 and a half years ago (Toronto 2014). That 6-2 6-2 win in Canada is also the only time he has taken any sets of Djokovic since 2010.

I'd like Jo to play well and take a set, but realistically this is going to be straight sets for Novak.

Why so many votes for JWT?
Djoko in 3 or 4. Maybe even 5, with 6-2 or 6-1 in fifth.

Took a set in Wimbledon 2011 and had MPs in RG 2012

Looks like a lot of voting from the heart and not from the mind. JWT hasn't shown any kind of form that would lead me to believe he is ready to take down the world no. 1. At this point in his career, Nole is more likely to lose to a young ball basher that can grind with him than someone like Tsonga. Djoker in three competitive but ultimately routine sets.

Tsonga the slight favourite according to TTW.

And he's not the slight favorite anywhere else on the planet. It's highly weird to see a nearly 50/50 split in predicting the outcome of this match. Tsonga is overweight, has played almost nothing since his knee injury and hasn't been relevant in slams for 10 years. Djokovic should destroy him, even if he's playing so-so.

The final of 2008 is the second round of 2019. And people call this a weak era.:rolleyes:
Conveniently omitted is that there's 11 years between the 2008 final and 2019.

Analogy time:

The USO final of 2002 was Agassi and Pete. Eleven years later in 2013 had those guys shown up in a final (retired, broken down shells of their former selves) how would that disprove this "weak era" nonsense?

This is Novak and Jo's USO 2002 match while their 2008 match was their USO 1990 match (Andre and PETE's first meeting at the USO)

he pushed murray to 5 sets a few years ago at wimbledon.

It wasn't in a final so my point stands: Tsonga hasn't been relevant in slams in 10 years. He's had the occasional upset of one of the big 3, but he's not made a final in ten years. Yet you have 50% of the people in the poll choosing him? Dang...

I haven't seen Tsonga play in a while. No idea what his form is like. Berdych to me looks fresh and in great form. Maybe Tsonga is too but realistically I don't see Djoker losing a set.

wouldn't say your analogy is correct.

If anyone deserves this it's Joe. This would cleanse all of his demons from him from blowing match points at the French I believe and of course the Epic first final all those years ago here in Melbourne

Tsonga might serve himself to a few close sets, but that's about it. I think he could've made a deeper run with a better draw, and he'll get more dangerous later in the year, but he's just not there yet at the momen.t

yes, but this doesn't mean he couldn't make an upset in the rounds prior to the final

Djokovic to thoroughly expose Joe's movement, hopefully Jo's forehand is firing like it was against De Minaur at Brisbane to make it a bit more of a challenge.

How are there 23 people voting for Tsonga

Should be a good match but come on. Dalfans with fingers and toes crossed for the upset?

Formidable match upcoming, and I'll risk saying Tsonga in 4.
Tsonga is the kind of matchup that can trouble Djoko. Plus I feel that the 'mentality' moment favors the Frenchman. I See Tsonga more stable mentally.
It's the good part of staying away from competing due to injury. When you are not on roll, tourny after tourny, you have time to think about your game and the come back can be very positive. I mean it's full of examples of this happening.

The other guy that has surprised me with his comeback is Berdych. Nadal better watch out. I have seen an interview of Thomas, and never saw him so calm and focused, and this is reflecting very positively on his tennis.

Tsonga hasn't played many matches since coming back, and Djokovic is the won who's actually saved MP and won matches vs Tsonga at Slams.

I think I have an idea who has the mental edge here
