Who will win the AO?

Ok my grasshoppers, we are now down to 3 players vying for the #1 spot. Simona has dropped to 3rd in the live ranking. We started the AO with 11 possible and now down to the last three. The live WTA rankings, as they stand now, have Naomi at #1, Petra at #2, Simona at #3 and Karolina at #5. Danielle Collins is the only semi-finalist not in contention for the #1 slot. Serena, with her loss to Karolina, remains outside the top 10 for now.

Iff Karolina P beats Naomi O in the SF round, she moves up to #3 and Simona H ends up #4 (instead of #3). Karolina must then win the title, for an additional 700 pts, in order to take over the #1 spot. If Naomi wins her SF with Karolina, the only way that she loses the #1 ranking is if Petra K takes the title.

I found, when l lived and played tennis in London for 15 years, that Serena especially really divided opinion to extremes: people either loved or disliked her. There was little middle ground. I've never known a club player that is just 'meh' about her.
That's true, to a point, on here.
I think Venus, being of a seemingly gentler nature, doesn't incite such extremes.

I don’t see no negative extreme side to Venus.

Plus she reached 8 Wimbledon Final’s from 2000-2010 and won 5 of them, so a lot of her popularity came from Wimbledon over here.

I've visited relatives there over the years, and just getting around, I've found the Williams sisters to be very popular, transcending the sport as they have all over the world. That cannot be said of many other name players.

People here don't like them in the UK? Well I disagree, I won't be surprised if you are from some small village in Yorkshire. I bet you're a daily reader (and commenter) of Daily Mail right? Starting to build up a picture here.

I am not far from Yorkshire actually, not a village though, Daily Mail is a great success story and one of the few that gives Tennis outside Murray a fair wind. If you disagree and think they are popular here you are wrong. The match fixing did for them here as a major pull, that sort of smell is seen really badly. Fair play is held very dear. Even a big sport like Cricket here has never really recovered from it's fixing scandal, just a complete no here. Federer is a massive overseas sporting draw, Williams not so.

Not surprised you're not 'far' from Yorkshire, knew you was from Northern England straight away. And lol you like Daily Mail as well? Even more disgusting than I thought. Anyway, you should come down south to the city and leave the village you live in and then see for yourself.
No match fixing is done for them here, if they were the best grass players of this century I'd rather see them in the final than in Round 2, you want the latter because you don't like them, not about capabilities.

I just chose a random area of Northern England. Someone that dislikes both Williams sisters as much as him is obviously from the northern part of England, for obvious reasons.:)

The worst part isn't that actually, he also reads Daily Mail, LOL.

And, for the record, I absolutely agree that the Daily Mail is a disgrace of a newspaper (although he's right that the sports coverage is good).
I've long held the view that the DM is read by people that think they are too educated to read The Sun. They're not. They all belong to a similar mindset, the difference being the amount of syllables they can cope with.
And that is nationwide.

They have no evidence or reason to accuse them of anything, save for the true reason they always deny--that denial is always the self-exposing act of the guilty.

It’s not so much Daily Mail I hate, but it’s the comments I read, beyond disgusting.

The worst thing about Daily Mail is their exaggeration. Every winter is apparently ‘going to be’ the coldest on record, lol.

And the example you give, if that was the worst of their journalistic integrity I wouldn't begrudge buying it occasionally.

I imagine most online comments for any media outlet have similiar points of view. Also JDoe is an American so presumably he doesn't actually buy the paper.
Which paper do you read? The Guardian?
 
I predict Osaka wins the AO and becomes the new #1. Maybe we finally have a young one ready to step up and dominate the tour.

And I don't read as much as I used to but it was The Guardian and News of The World (until it ended).

That sounds exactly like certain Talk Tennis members, only their level of ever-increasing hostility toward Serena makes that quote look like a compliment.

At one time, I believed Azarenka (at the point when she was winning majors), then Muguruza (now 25) would be more dominant, but that did not happen (yet for Muguruza, in any case). While Osaka at 21 is young enough that her winning say, 2 majors per year would make her dominant (if the other two majors were won by two different players), it seems many players certainly have the talent to win majors, but are they destined to become "that" kind of sport-changing force? Only time will tell, starting with this AO final.

I hope not. Osaka can be no 1 in Doha/Dubai.
Kvitova can take no. 1 spot until she drops around 1400 points (Doha + St Pete).

Basically I want both to become no. 1 and most likely scenario is if Kvitova grab first and Naomi grabs it leading to IW.

Don't knock the North of England. Some lovely people up in Yorkshire, and here in the North West as well. Plenty of Daily Heil readers in the South of England too, btw, and a huge Brexit vote. Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds all voted remain, btw.

I haven't watched her. However, I watched Kvitova in person in the 2014 Wimbledon final; she was just jawdropping. I notice she hasn't dropped a set here. I'm not going to bet against her when she reaches a GS final in that kind of form ...

Hope so. Serena had not dominate the circuit before she turned 20 although she did win one when she was 17 (Almost 18).
 
Not sure if the commentators just gave something away (we pretty much all suspected anyway) that Stosur/Zhang are dating.

One of the commentators was saying how Zhang was going to retire during the 2015 season but her partner (make of that what you will) convinced her otherwise. The other commentator says that Stosur was the one who gave her inspiring words to give it her all and to play her best, quickly tries to change the tune of the conversation though. Stosur and Zhang were not doubles partners back in 2015 so she wouldn't be using the word 'partner' as in doubles partner in that context.

Naomi has had to face some higher ranked opponents, altho' she had been spared having to deal with Simona or Serena. Petra OTOH has been pretty dominant in her matches. Handing out breadsticks and a bagel in all rounds except for 1R with Rybáriková.
