Technically, the "curse" was not broken in that the observation was that an Australian had not won an AO singles title in a very long time; Hewitt was only a one-time finalist in 2005, while Stosur only made it to R4 in 2006 & 2010.
No, just no. I was referring to her constant failure down under, not her inability to win a slam in singles in Melbourne but more her inability to win A MATCH in singles in Melbourne (she hasn’t since 2015).

My examples were purely tennis club people.

In terms of male non-tennis friends, the only female player that they appear to have a definite view is Anna Kournikova! And she's long gone but her name still registers.

Female friends- Williams did strike a cord in terms of equality, but the 'mum' thing really grated.

Williams imploding at the US Open brought her back on the radar of people who have next to no interest in tennis.
Yeah, sure, even I had tennis following /playing friends in mine. Here, Sharapova has name recognition if not necessarily for tennis reasons but only tennis followers keep track of names like Kvitova or Azarenka. Interest has gone down a lot in the 2010s.

I am not from Yorkshire or Northern England, East Midlands actually from one of the leftist towns in England, you generalise too much, Yorkshire is a very varied county in every sense, some of the richest and poorest towns live within its borders in England. As for the Daily Mail I wouldn't buy any newspaper, they all have an agenda but they do good as well as bad, they have flushed the speedboat killer out this week for example. Match fixing when they play each other and the damage that has done to the game at large. I wouldn't live in London for a pension thank you.

I have not said that Williams has not been an extremely talented athlete and it is a great shame they didn't follow the proper path, maybe their dad had too much hold and it really would have been interesting if the natural course was allowed because Venus was the better player at the start. I don't like them like I don't like Liverpool FC I want them to lose every game but I don't hate anybody.

How can you say they are extremely talented when at the same time you accuse them of taking PED's? Since when do drugs make athletes accurate?

But anyways they did take the natural course. Up until 2008 they were pretty much equal with their no. of slams, Serena was just mentally stronger. It shows when they play against each other and when they play against others. And then Venus became ill, which you've also called fake.

Showing his lack of knowledge, Brexit is a complex issue 55% of the English vote went Brexit and more down the Eastern side of the country taking out London than the Western side. When you talk like that Liverpool and Manchester are the most deprived places in England, all the Education, employment stats demonstrate that and they voted stay so there are a lot of contradictions and none of the politicians have a grip on it. There are good reasons people voted Brexit though and the Europeans brought it on themselves. My view I voted remain because I didn't have confidence in our politicians getting us out in an orderly manner, I was right there, at heart though coming out of an block to which we are paying a lot of money for little influence may be good long-term but then I look at how much better Educated they are in countries like Germany and Holland and think maybe play safe and let them run the show is safer, gives some protection from our politicians.

I didn't actually bring up Brexit lol:).

WDC..or TMF...or whatever alternate username he digs up...will continue to curse this world with his barbaric beliefs, otherwise known as racism. He has his hive minded supporters on this board, so he feels more than justified in spreading evil against the Williams family at every turn. Thankfully, a global tide is slowly but surely washing that evil away, and if he still has a problem with it...tough s***.

"Liverpool and Manchester are the most deprived places in England" and I am the one showing my lack of knowledge? Do my a favour. Which decade/century do you live in? They do have their share of deprived areas still of course, but both places have made tremendous strides in overcoming the challenges arising from the collapse of their industries. They are both vibrant places very much on the up. Not that the callous austerity policies of this decade have been a great help.

I agree with you on two points though. Brexit is indeed a complex issue, which makes the "have your cake and eat it" campaign by people like BoJo and JRM so nefarious. And the incompetence displayed by our politicians has been the most shocking thing about the whole process.

Anyway, back to tennis please.

As posted in the women's final thread--

Good for Osaka. Once again, the WTA sees non-big name players take the majors, proving how strong it is.

So, for certain TT members, who swore Serena "wins everything," since 2010--

  • Schiavone - FO - 2010
  • Clijsters - USO 2010 & AO 2011
  • Li Na - FO 2011 & AO 2014
  • Kvitova - Wimbledon 2011 & 2014
  • Stosur - USO 2011
  • Sharapova - FO 2012 & FO 2014
  • Azarenka - AO 2012 & 2013
  • Bartoli - Wimbledon 2013
  • Pennetta - USO 2015
  • Kerber - AO 2016, USO 2016 & Wimbledon 2018
  • Muguruza - FO 2016 & Wimbledon 2017
  • Ostapenko - FO 2017
  • Stephens - USO 2017
  • Wozniacki - AO 2018
  • Halep - FO 2018
  • Osaka: USO 2018
  • Osaka: AO 2019

That's 16 women, 25 majors. The WTA is in fine shape. New champions always rising to the top.

It all is still about Serena, who won other 9 . She's so big she expropriated women's tennis completely. WTA will collapse once she'll retire.

Well done to Osaka, who played well and showed great heart in overcoming what happened at the end of the second set.

I wanted Petra to win, but Naomi is a deserving champion and was the better player on the day.

Happy for the winner.
Disappointed for the runner up.
A good women's tournament in both singles and doubles.
Sportmanship the winner.
A good look for tennis in general.

Osaka deserved her win, although the veteran nearly took her out a couple of times. Still, Osaka has the right support and inspiration, so she will certainly do well at the majors going forward.

Regarding the rest of the year: It will be a great day for all professional sports history if Serena wins major #24.
