I'm sure people will be talking down Rublev's performance, and focusing on Federer, but that was easily one of Rublev's best matches I've seen. He dominated with the off forehand.

Moved very well too, some great gets throughout. Even hit some nice volleys. Federer was obviously lacking but if Rublev was slightly less sharp the match could have been very interesting.

Rublev has been impressive and has resembled the better player today, very impressive performance.

it would surprise nobody if he beats novak/karen in the semis and wins the whole thing. his intensity is great to see and he has a very good approach to his game.

On the contrary, it would surprise almost everybody.

BTW, Nole is only 56 weeks away of Roger’s record of weeks at #1.
That’s is one year and 4 months from now.

Can't say I'm really surprised. Fed was out of hit most of the match, lacked conviction. Even in his 1st match, his performance was very average I would say. I don't think he's carrying any injuries as he looked OK physically. I do wonder if that Wimbledon final is still in his head.

Does anyone know if Federer had to pick his kids up from soccer practice by 5? Because he sure played like I do when I've somewhere to be by a certain time...

So, Nadal cops it for winning a title because he didn't have to beat Fed or Novak for it, pounded on a useless next gen dud etc...

Today fedr loses to a nxt gen dud...

Maybe Rublev choked on a sandwich that had Swiss cheese and now has devoted his life to ruining things from Switzerland?

I thought Fed was the father of fast conditions, and that he lost Wimbledon only because it played slow?
I've seen the pages long b.s. you spew. I'm not interested. He's 38 years old and players aren't always in their best place. Fast conditions will expose that.

Well this is annoying, I saw a little bit of the 2nd set and Rublev was peppering Federer's backhand and Federer couldn't deal with the barrage, he was making a multitude of errors also.

Federer has more time to prepare for the US Open, you just have to look at it like that, he's not someone who gets into a slump he'll bounce back as for Rublev, congrats to him, he's moving back up the rankings and he has the game to cause damage. Medvedev, Khachanov and Rublev, a dangerous Russian trio of younger (23/22) players.

he needs a damn good draw for the USO.

This is a real low for Federer, he lost to a guy who was bone without a clavicle.

Yes, he was off in his last match, too. Better to be off here than at USO, but sure hope he finds his form in time!

It probably has a bit to do with the Wimbledon Final sure, but about 80% of it is just Federer being old (and I mean extremely old) and having off days in Masters events. And that isn't specific to Federer. RBA was beating Djokovic earlier in the year in Masters event until he got beaten pretty easily at Wimbledon. Lots of people lost their minds when Fognini beat Nadal at MC and another RG title later, Nadal was laughing his ass off.

Of course, Federer isn't going to come close to winning the USO, if he made the SFs I'd be impressed, but it's still not like a loss in Cincy matters to him at this point.

For sure.
He's had his share of "bad defeats" in his career, but I think it's easier to bounce back from those when your younger.
This is entirely speculative on my part, but I think this one will sting for a while and I'm not sure how he can bounce back at 38 knowing that perhaps this was his last chance.

Big picture wise, a loss in Cincinnati means little. Even if he was to win the title, Rafa is still seeded #2 at the USO and Federer will still be #3 so it doesn't change anything.

I gave up reading anything into these defeats a long time ago; the Big3 fine tune their season to perform peak at the GS.

I don't think Fed losing a match is shocking as much as the way it happened was. If anything you'd hope he at least would get more matches in before the USO

Wow! That soon!
It’s going to really happen! I wasn’t aware he was that close.
Yeah. If Djokovic maintains the #1 ranking, he would reach 309 weeks at the start of 2020 Wimbledon.

The 2019 points don't drop until July 13th, so he would end up at 311 weeks if he loses the #1 ranking immediately after Wimbledon

Federer won just 42.7% of the total points today. That's his lowest mark since he won 41.6% of the total points in the 2016 Aussie Open SF vs Novak Djokovic.

Yikes.

He's currently 4 weeks behind Connors, 6 weeks behind Lendl, 22 weeks behind Sampras and 46 behind Federer.
Incredible
The way the tour is these days he might go way past that in the end. He still got some more years to be on tour. He has time to lose the ranking and get it back again also.

This is how I see it. It's a lot easier to bounce back as a young champion than perhaps your final opportunity against one of the most challenging opponents. Federer is a smart guy and knows that aren't many more chances. That defeat has to have sat on his mind more than any other. I don't see how it couldn't. It should surprise nobody if Federer just never recovers from W 2019.

However I would never expect him to lose to Rublev. What the hell happened?

i think it was rublev that was tearing up. regardless they still hold fed as a benchmark so to beat him means a lot to people. i am so looking forward to another round of "changing of the guard"
I saw that Rublev was in tears for sure. But when they showed Roger as he was walking to the tunnel, it looked like was crying, and then he passed the fans without signing anything, while one of the fans clapped him on the back as if to comfort him. Maybe some pent up emotions after the Wimby loss are pouring out now.

Interesting how Rublev will hold up after two significant victories. He's clearly very passionate. Hopefully he doesn't let up.

policing who and why someone roots for someone is far more annoying than someone who likes an individual player. its not the worst thing to like 1 single player esp if these people are acting giving to the sport by paying for tickets as well. not to mention some people do like someone due to style of play adn well might not find most of the tour interesting barring 1 or two.

i dont think fed ever signs when he loses. at most he will fav to the crowd and that's it but he is pretty quick to go to the locker rooms
