Congrats to Fed in vulturing an extremely bad IW. Continues to get soft paths in basically everything

The only chance Thiem has is if Federer tries to rally with him too often. I'm thinking Fed has more than enough variety for Thiem 6-3 7-6

They can’t be that soft. He hasn’t won a Masters title in a year and a half nor made even a semifinal at a slam in over a year.

Maybe because that's because he's both fallen a bit off and because he's got tougher opponents in the ones he doesn't win and the ones he did were extremely weak?

Right. I’m not saying he didn’t get a weak ass draw here, but he certainly hasn’t been vulturing “basically everything”. The opposite is more the case.

Shouldn't have used the words basically everything

Federer will have too much variety for the kid I feel. Like tennisaddict said, he'll have to mix it up like he did against Stan.

He'll win in 2 if he does that IMO. Still not convinced the match actually means that much for Thiem even if he wins though, and it obviously doesn't mean all that much for Federer (he's won a load of these as it is). Don't see it translating to a slam win any time soon for Thiem tbh. I only hope Federer wins because I don't rate Thiem on a HC.

Not sure how many people actually seriously said that though. Del Potro is obviously better than Thiem on a HC. It's not close IMO.
I would never take anyone who said that seriously.

But I wouldn't take anyone seriously who says a 37 year old would "vulture" any tournament, which was the point I was trying to make to BrokenGears with his silly dig at Fed. It's all ridiculous.

Yeah, end of the day Fed should win, but he's 37 so it basically cancels out.

It's not a silly dig at all, it's perfectly legitimate and hiding behind the age excuse doesn't mean its ok for Fed to get easy opponents

I mean when is his form going to fall off I remember Agassiz losing in the third round of the US open and saying that enough was enough and he was 36 years old

Nothing is a given for old man Fed. Thiem actually played a great match against Raonic and has played quite well on this “almost as slow as clay” hard court tourney. And Fed moves like an elephant at his age.

I am picking Fed in 3. I think that Thiem will outplay Fed, but will choke away some key points to allow Fed to take home the title. If this were 2017 IW Fed, then Fed would demolish Thiem. But unfortunately, this is old man Fed.

This match has coinflip written all over it for me.

Where? You mean RG? Or just masters?

For me, lots of players can take out Roger on clay. And Thiem is one of them.. if Thiem can beat Rafa in Bo3, then..
Thiem wins the occasional match against Nadal because Rafa cannot play all clay tournaments with the same intensity anymore. I don’t want to say he tanked the matches, but he took Rome not fully seriously in 2017 and Madrid isn’t his best clay masters anyway. The other losses were in 2015 when he was in a slump and lost to many players.

But Nadal would never lose to Thiem at RG. Also I think Federer has a good match-up with Thiem despite his 2016 losses against him when Federer wasn’t really in form anywhere.

We will see what happens on clay, but I don’t think Federer will be very much inferior compared to the other surfaces. In 2015 when he took clay seriously the last time he lost to RG winner Wawrinka and to Djokovic in Rome. No shame about that.

Federer was scheduled to meet Nadal in the semis and Djokovic in the finals. He turned up for both semis and finals, they did not, how exactly is it vulturing?

Then by definition, Rafa's USO 2017 draw or Djokovic's USO 2018 draws were strong?

Fed's draw here has turned out to be easy. No arguments here. But he still has to beat a guy 12 years his junior tomorrow. Let's hope he pulls it off.

I don’t think Fed will have an easy match at all. Thiem played a solid, controlled match today. Unforced errors were kept to a minimum and his shot selection was much better than it has been.

After Fed got his 100th I felt satisfied. Would rather see him give us a few more matches to remember than cruise to more titles.

Nah, if Fed can't even beat Thiem in a HC masters final, then he really doesn't deserve to win any big titles anymore.

Thiem is the best opponent Federer could have hoped for in a HC masters final.

If it were a true HC then yes.

So I'm not sure Thiem is the best opponent seeing as it's slowed right down. Suits his game style more than a few other guys, as we've seen with the results.
