If it were a true HC then yes.

So I'm not sure Thiem is the best opponent seeing as it's slowed right down. Suits his game style more than a few other guys, as we've seen with the results.
IW has always been slow an Fed has won this event 5 times so far. IW suits Federer even more than it suits Thiem.

People assume that just because it's a slow HC, it means Fed is helpless on it, forgetting that IW is actually Fed's second best masters event.

It has been slow for a couple of years, with this year being even slower.

I never said anything about Fed being hopeless on it, did I? I said out of all the opponents don't think Thiem is a walkover, this surface suits him.

And I'm well aware of Fed's success at IW.

I'd suggest you learn how to comprehend statements correctly instead of making assumptions that have no correlation with the original statement!

I don't see why Thiem is suddenly more favored just because it is a slow HC. Federer has actually done more at this even since 2017.

Fed in 3.

I think Thiem will eek out the first set then choke it all away.

So a 37 year old is still required to beat the #1 or #2 player in the world in order to be a legitimate title?
Uh, everything he wins is legitimate, just like how all of Djokovic’s wins against old Federer are perfectly legitimate even if you have this age excuse.

Of course, one can call the strength of a tournament in question when a player hasn’t played a top 10 player, gets a literal bye to the final, among several other things, just like fans of other players have to listen to same old age crap ever since Federer started losing a bit more. And then of course, when Fed wins tournaments, it’s a huge impressive feat, the dude’s apparently like fifty playing in a wheelchair, when he’s obvs decimating his pathetic opponents

That’s how life works, Fed can retire anytime he wants. He hasn’t yet so he’s held up to the same standards of every other player, every tournament he wins can be questioned and the strength of the players he faced can be debated.

As I said, you can have the IW title, but this tournament was totally pathetic. I’m simply calling into question Fed’s ability to win tournaments with strong draws. He does so sometimes(Miami 2017), other times you have this tournament, AO 2018, among a litany of many others

IW 16 was an ok tournament, better than this IW

Mia was ass, no question. Still Djokovic played more top 10 players

Several players gave him trouble, RG 16 was tougher than AO 18 for sure.

Still tougher than this tournament so far, Djokovic actually played top 10 players

Who was going to beat Djokovic at Shanghai 18 lol. It’s not like Fed’s playing out of his mind this tourney

Several players gave him trouble, still stronger than other slams. USO 17, RG 18, AO 2018, Wimby 2018 maybe

Just take a couple of days away from the forum if you can’t handle Roger potentially winning a tournament. Your posts here are beyond embarrassing and salty as hell.

Thanks for providing nothing to the discussion.

I don’t know what’s more pathetic, you, tennispro, and True Fanerer or this tournament. Hard time choosing.

At least some members of the Fed fan base actually provide some worthwhile discussion. You on the other hand?

All I see is you whining about Fed's draw. Don't see anything informative whatsoever. I see stupid posts from you that Thiem will choke the match away as if it's really up to him LMAO. The only way Fed loses this match is if he plays bad. It rubs you so much that his game has returned to him and Djokovic is reduced to playing doubles with PETE. That's what this is really about. Be happy Novak has won the last three slams and has more success in front of him. Fed's days are numbered.

The nonsense in this thread is amazing. Has Federer returned to 2017 levels? I think not, but betterer than end of 2018 for sure. Federer may be playing well, but Thiem has been absolutely clinical in his last two matches, displaying his best speed on court to date (late bloomer it appears), and phenomenal serving and groundies. EVERYTHING is clicking for Thiem. Don't fall into the trap of comparing Raonic vs Thiem against Raonic vs Big 3 and getting killed for the most part. Raonic was the best I'd seen him in a long time and almost felt like Wimby 2016. 4th year in a row SF or better at IW and the fact that he has very easily beat Thiem in their previous two encounters means this was actually a tremendous victory for Thiem. This is Thiem's worst matchup on tour and the fact he won and made Raonic look like a pud for much of the match is a huge improvement for Thiem.

Thiem won't be choking in the final and he's extremely likely to play well. The Raonic match was not all that draining and Fed might not be ready to go into full gear after a far from secure victory over Hurkacz on Friday. Thiem in 2 since he's playing better tennis than I ever imagined he could and I can imagine a lot.;)

Thiem is a worthy M1000 finalist. Consistent top 10 player for many years now, former #4. Sure his best results have come on clay, but he's had success on hard courts too at times.

It's far from a given that Roger will win.

On the other hand, pretty much everything has gone right for him this tournament, and it is a brilliant chance to win one more IW title.

It's a shame this match is scheduled pretty late in the night. Most people who watch tennis on the tele are from Europe. Organizers should know that.
Yeah **** the rich people in California. The directors should respect us, the tv viewers from Europe

Thiem is crying now! Your predictions concerning him are almost as jinxy as srshs’ kiss of death for The Nadal.

I don’t pay much attention, but is your favourite player Djokovic by any chance? ‘cos when he wins 10 slams in a row against the current tour you’re gonna be the guy trying to keep a straight face when you claim that any of them were “strong” fields...

If Thiem does annihilate Fed then I'm all for a dominant performance which sends a huge warning shot to the rest of the tour. It's about time someone laid down a marker.

I partly agree with this and would actually like Thiem to do well, certainly better than he has until now. He is a very likeable guy with a nice looking game. But you are selling Roger short.

Dominic played very nice against Raonic, but he barely squeezed through even with a 76 % 1st serve in - although admittedly some of those were really tactical. Rao was really poor on the return and offered no real variety throughout the match (or his career for that matter). He also gifted the game in which Thiem finally broke him.

The court probably suits Thiem but he has some weaknesses which really won’t help him against Rog:
-a long swing that makes him vulnerable to rushing
-a rather average BH return
-standing too far from the baseline leaving him exposed to drop shots and change of rhythm/pace
-prone to over hitting and UEs

Now, Dominator might play great or Rog might be rusty and make me eat my words later on. However, the smart money would be on Fed in 2 in just over an hour. And that’s from me who likes Fed a lot but would love it so much more if the young guns finally retired these geezers :)

I think he wants to play the first iteration of the tournament in the new venue. Points from a good run could also help in the jockeying for seeds later on in the season.
He can win against any player other than Novak Djokovic. So I don't think he needs to withdraw.

Plus his next tournament, Madrid, is a long time away.

I have a doubt that he may play Istanbul or some other clay tournament other than MC

Roger Federer likes this court. He is selling Roger short. Roger with his variety, will be too much for Thiem on this court. Of course, with Roger, at his age, you never know what he brings to the court on a given day. But a well playing Roger on a hard court, even at this age, is too much for most of the players including Thiem.

Roger must be eyeing this trophy once Novak lost.

I keep reading this non-sense a lot recently because Djokovic is the player Federer beat the most in his career. It's just that Fed is exceptional in the sense thar he reaches the latter stages of tournaments more often than not despite playing poorly which is not the case of his arch-rivals. It has been the story of his career versus Nadal.

Tough one for me to call so I'll go with Federer. Thiem looked great against Raonic. He was playing smarter against Raonic than I've seen in the past. For some reason, I haven't seen him play a match in a long time. Federer, of course, can make anyone else play like crap and he does have the extra day of rest.

Fed has won plenty of tournaments with strong draws. The AO + Sunshine Double is just one example among others.

Djokovic has also won tournaments with easy draws.

It evens out.
