A very nice 28-man pool of talent for one of two ATP250 tournaments this week as grass court season begins. World #6 Stefanos Tsitsipas and #14 Borna Coric are the top seeds with an appealing mixture of youngsters (de Minaur, Tiafoe, Garin) and veterans (Verdasco, Goffin, Gasquet) rounding out the seeds.

In addition, a teen (Jannik Sinner) and Davidovich Fokina (20 and former Wimby junior champion) add some talented youth to the mix after qualifying.

Who ya got and why?

Discuss or disgust.

Sinners rejoice! Jannik barely made qualies as an alternate but then beat two seeds (Lacko and Fabbiano) to make main draw. How long can he stay undefeated on grass? Plays Jarry 1R on Monday. 3-0 career grass master? It will be a great tuneup for Adonisipas!

Strong serving on the grass in the first set of the tournament led to a 7-6(2) TB advantage for Taylor Fritz over the young (20) Austrian lefty Jurij Rodionov. 18 aces combined, 11 for THF.

Fritz took an early lead in the second set and held throughout the set and match for the 7-6(2) 6-4 win. Taylor tough stats...14 aces and survived all 7 break opportunities his younger Austrian created.

Garin has advanced to 2R with a straight set win over qualifier Caruso. For the #7 seed, this was his first career MD grass win to go along with his perfect 6-0 record at Wimby qualifying.

Goffin starting to get closer to his best level. Playing very nice tennis at the moment.
That score line vs a talented kid with experience on the surface (Wimby’17 Boys champ, two straight-set qualies win) says George McFly is peaking. May win a set vs the Air Bear.

Don’t know what to make of this result...Did ADF wake up feeling like Berdych?

Why is Tsitsipas playing? His ranking is already so overloaded with 250s he'd need SF just to pick up points, and even if he wins he won't go up in ranking.

Pretty simple. He wants two tournaments to be as ready as possible for Wimby. Grass season is too short so playing a 250 with a 1R bye won’t wear him out before Queens and SW19.

I think he committed to this tournament in 2018 when he was like 18th or some **** and just has refused to pull out cause the money is probably too good to resist + doesn't wanna risk crashing early in Halle/Queens and not playing enough ahead of Wimbly?

I want Gasquet to defend it but he's still not in pre-injury form, which of course was post-peak Gasquet. I hope he makes a deep run at least.

I don't think he's really thinking about it. As Zverev put it "he plays every week".

Who is the Air Bear?

I watched the first few games of the first set and planned to follow some of the second set, but when I tried to do so a short while later, the match was already over. ADF seemed very impatient. Like a lot of today's players he hits the ball very hard and tends to go for a winner too early; as a result he often makes an error before he has given himself time to work himself into a point. ADF has some tactical nous, however, and likes to bring his opponent forward by drop-shotting and then lobbing when the other player is at the net. But the Spaniard tends to overuse this tactic and that robs of one of its elements: surprise. He still has lot to learn and change if he wants to be a future force in the sport.

I think the 4 seed at Wimbledon is possible for him if he picks up enough grass points this week and next. The difference in the Wimbledon seeding race currently between the 4 seed (Anderson) and 8 seed (Tsits) is less than 500 points. Thiem, Zverev, and Nishikori are the others in that pack.

Oh that's actually a good point.

Who is the commentator on TennisTV for the Tsitsipas Jarry match? He is unbearable.

Every sentence he speaks is ended with an inflection and he seems to find amusement in messing up so many players names.

He is literally saying Nicholas CRABBY.

Sooooooooo bad

I’ve heard him before and I agree he’s awful. Tsitsipas just dove and landed hard on his shoulder lol

Cheating in the tsitsipas match. Everybody in the stadium knew jarry double faulted to get broke but the faulty challenge system shows the ball was in somehow?

Tsitsipas looked lack luster today. More of a bad loss for him than a good one for Jarry but congrats to the Chilean anyway. Good day for Chile with Garin also winning his match.

Tsitsipas didn't train on grass courts until Tuesday. On Monday, he was still in Monte Carlo according to his Instagram stories. Maybe he thought he was going to destroy the field even with no training ?

This week looks like pretty much a write-off for most of the top players who are in action. I suspect they're just trying to get their feet wet on the grass and we'll see some better tennis from the big guns at the two 500 events next week.

Croudy Bar? )) Tsits must have been thinking about getting back to his new car, Julius) I saw him showing it off on youtube a few days back. So I had my presentiments)

Disappointing defeat for Tsitsipas. I guess there was the wind, the transition to grass isn't easy, and the match was close anyway ... Still, would have been nice to see him build some momentum here.
