The thing I loved most in a somewhat scrappy final (understandable) was the hug the two guys shared after the match. It came straight from the heart and not for the cameras. Two folks who know they may not contest another masters final in their career (let alone win one) and Fognini could well feel the pain of his fellow journeyman. As respectful as the Big Four have been to each other, you still don't get to see this because there is still a rivalry and an edge at the end of the day. The camaraderie between the two brought Ivanisevic-Rafter to mind for me. Last chance to win Wimbledon for both and one of them had to win as much as both deserved it. At least this was a straightforward affair, so Lajovic can go back feeling happy to have been a runner up than agonising that he came so close to winning a Masters (because he didn't).

I agree the hug at the net was a nice touch and seemed totally genuine. But Fog is #12 in the world and hasn't been a journeyman for 10 years. Lajovic is top 50, not a journeyman either. A journeyman really is more someone like Donald Young or Mischa Zverev. They play everything, win rarely and might bag 1-2 tournaments in their careers. Fabster is WAY better than that and so is Lajovic.

Ahhhh, some good news for once! Stoked that fognini won, I tried not to think about the final at all lest i jinx him

Actually, Lajovic has yet to win a title. Fog doesn't exactly have a big tally of titles either. Ranking is a little misleading as the current lack of depth is pushing thirty plus/late twenties folks higher up than they previously would have been. Like Isner or Anderson enjoying career best results.

My golden standard for journeymen has somehow become Andreas Seppi for some reason. I mean no disrespect, but he seems to have the most average game possible, and made a solid career out of it.

I know Lajovic has yet to win a title, but he's top 50 and thus, not a journeyman, that was my point. :) Fog has not been a journeyman for a decade. Someone was calling Gasquet a "journeyman" here last week, but he's won 15 titles.
