Looks like Tomljanovic will get that win over Mladenovic after all :-D:-D:-D

For those that don’t get the reference, Mladenovic thrashed Tomljanovic at the Fed Cup final a few days. Mladenovic is dating Thiem while Tomljanovic is dating Berrettini. So basically she can count this one.

Funny.

Nice points for Berrettini and some cash. It ultimately doesn’t matter for Thiem as he’s through and I guess he didn’t care about the lost points.

This is classic Thiem; this match is already over. GSM Goatteo.
To be honest, Thiem has struggled with Berretini the last three times he's played him. He even nearly lost to him in Vienna. He's through to the SF anyways so probably was hard to give it his all in this match.

Not surprised Berrettini won. Even if it weren’t a dead rubber, Big Bear has a massive serve that Thiem wouldn’t like on this fast indoor surface, and he doesn’t get as much ground stroke rhythm as against Fed or Djokovic. But maybe he also just didn’t want to waste too much effort on this match to save himself for the semis and beyond.

Historic win for Berrettini, who just became the first Italian ever to get a win at the Masters.

Sure, it was kind of a "dead rubber", but he does seem to have the Austrian's number: now 2-1 H2H in the last month alone, and he really shoulda won in Vienna too... The way things turned out, he's got to be feeling he actually could have sneaked into the semis. Still, a great way to cap an even greater season - despite being clearly far from top form, as he mentioned in the on-court interview...

(Davis Cup is next: anyone else feeling a lil under the weather? We got a kid up in the mountains who I'm sure could quickly pack his bags and catch a last-minute flight...)

No discussion or remarks during practice, but Thiem kind of holding his left knee cap some in practice. Probably physically didn't want to hit top gear.

Its amazing to me really because in 2016 he always gave his all in matches. By 2017 we pretty much see Thiem at 90% most of the time except for big matches. I'm not sure if this is mental or deliberate tanking now, but I don't like it.:mad:

Berettini may lack experience but he is a top 10 and just 23 years old.
Kudos to him for his clutch play which has his Recent Elo pumped up to 7 and even higherer a month or so back. Reality is Matteo is like 37th in points won on hard courts so he's definitely a weaker link here. Tsits believe it or not also a bit weakerer than the WTF field by Recent Elo and Points won. :unsure:

WTF interesting because at this point maximum Big 3 in SFs is two and they will have to play each other guaranteeing an interesting Final between young and ancienterer.:p

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but does anyone else think that putting Nadal vs Tsitsipas first is kind of idiotic from the organizers? What sort of motivation would Medvedev have on his match against Zverev if Rafa wins first against Tsitsipas? If Medvedev would play first, he would go into that match knowing that he could still make the semis.

Well let's hope it's not an injury because that would be a terrible end to a great tournament he has had so far.

Could still be final without big 3 in theory of Nadal doesn't make it to the semis, @Meles

Well if Zverev wins, Nadal will pull out. That's worse scenario for organizer.

Beats Fed and Novak, loses to Berrettini...

I suspected that would happen. He tries to overpower his opponents, which works with old guys like Fed or Djok but may not work against other young guys who's just as powerful as himself. When he cannot overpower the opponent, seems like he gets rattled mentally.

now that Federer has done RAFA a favor today ,, Will RAFA do Roger a favor and tank his match If they play this weekend?

I believe they're hoping Nadal somehow comes out and they play him in the first SF Saturday vs Federer(could have been Djoko) on Saturday. This allows the old goats maximum rest before the final. Another example of the fraudulance of success making life easier at the very top. They've massively sped up court conditions in general for the whole tour this year to prop up the older players. I suspect this is one of the issues for LostGen as they spend a whole career in slower conditions and just harder for them to adapt. The younger players a bit more maleable for change.

I'm not advocating that in the name of fairness tournaments slow down their court because usually more money for them means the sport is more successful and building for bigger things. Lets just recognize what is going on.:sneaky:

If AZ wins today vs Medvedev he's through.
AZ, Nadal, Tsit would be in a head to head circle in that case
So sets would come into picture
tsit = 5/2
nadal = 4/4
zverev = 2/2 (at present), would be 4/2 or 4/2 if he wins.

if zverev loses to med, Nadal becomes first in the group due to h2h vs tsit and he faces fed (who is 2nd in his group)

So Nadal and Djokovic have both fallen in the round robin four times now (though in 2017 Nadal pulled out after just one match). Fed’s played here 17 times now and only once fallen in the round robin. Nuts.

A mere 1-title lead over Novak doesn’t really seem representative of their respective achievements here to me. Maybe Fed will rectify that on Sunday.

I agree but Federer blew it a number of years. He should have won it in 05 against Nalbandian and I still can’t believe he lost to Goffin in 2017. Fed playing anything decent tears up Goffin and Dimitrov.
