I said the NEXT time they play. Okay then, the next time they play, I want you to say Nadal has this in the bag because Tsitsipas is a mug.
Tsitsipas being a mug doesn't mean Nadal has this in the bag. There were lots of times when Nadal lost to absolute mugs.

Fed loses a match. He's 38

Nadal loses match. He's injured.

Djokovic loses a match. Must be cheating on his wife.

HATER ALERT! You got one out of three right. Here's the truth:

Federer loses a match. Doesn't count, because he's older than Father Time.

Nadal loses a match. Doesn't count, because he's an injured Bull who was, anyway, the moral victor.

Djokovic loses a match. Does count, because he is an evil villain who must be cheating on his wife.

I imagine it's a done deal if Nadal makes the final in Paris. Can't see him losing early in London even though he doesn't enjoy himself there.

If Nadal reaches the final in Paris and loses to Novak, he will lead the rankings by 880 pts. Although that seems like a huge gulf for 1 tournament, in practicality all Novak needs (in addition to an undefeated title run himself of course) is for Federer to beat Nadal in London.

Scenario 1: Fed/Novak in same group - Novak 3-0 wins group, Fed 2-1 runner-up
Fed beats 3-0 Nadal in the SF, Novak wins title

Pts: Nadal: 600 Novak: 1500 - Novak wins #1 by 20 pts

Scenario 2: Fed/Nadal in same group - Fed 3-0 wins group, Nadal 2-1 runner-up
3-0 Novak beats Nadal in the SF, Novak wins title

Pts: Nadal: 400 Novak: 1500 - Novak wins #1 by 220 pts

So things don't look too bleak for Novak actually if he takes care of business and just wins out. I think most would agree that Federer would be favored over Nadal on the indoor hardcourt of London.

Thanks. I assumed that after reaching Paris final Nadal would just need to get through round robin to assure himself the YE #1. Not that bleak as you said.

Got to win two more matches in Paris first though. Djokovic was great today but you never know with him in BO3 these days, and that little cold or whatever he has is annoying.

For sure, I don't think Djokovic's day-to-day form in Bo3 is a lock by any means given how many poor displays we have seen from him this year, but if the favorite wins every match for the rest of the year, Djokovic will be #1:

Djoko>Dimi, Nadal>Shapo, Djoko>Nadal in Paris
Djoko undefeated, Fed only losing to Djoko, Nadal only losing to Fed/Djoko in London

Now I would still favor Nadal to finish #1 though, because even though the the pro-Djokovic outcomes are the favorites in each individual match, he needs all of them to break his way to get #1 and cumulatively the match underdogs would be favored to score at least 1 win.

Federer loses a match: doesn't count, he is old.
Nadal loses a match: doesn't count, he is injured.
Djokovic loses a match, doesn't count, he was not at his best.

Wow I didn't realize that. It's still a tough order though. Novak has spoiled his fans after fall runs like 2013, 2014 and 2015 where it's expected for him to pull the rabbit out of the hat time and time again. It would be epic if he could pull it off though.

So, if Djokovic wins all matches, and Nadal wins all others, it's actually Federer the deciding factor who gets YE#1

In essence yes and after Nadal's withdrawl today this is even more true.

There was a fringe case possible where Nadal could lose to Fed and still finish #1, but now that he is only getting SF pts instead of F for Paris, this scenario would now lead to Djokovic being #1:

Fed/Nadal are in the same group
Fed beats Nadal but then himself loses to someone else and hence Nadal still wins the group with a 2-1 record
Nadal wins his SF and then loses the final to Djokovic

Points: Nadal: 800 Djokovic: 1500

The TLDR now is: Djokovic just needs Nadal to lose 1 match in London between the RR+SF to be in control of his own destiny
