I wonder how many 1 round matches still should Sharapova lose before she'd finally realise that her time is up.

What's going on with Kasatkina? After a short stint at the top she's been in continuous down spiral for quite some time. Was she seriously injured?

Yep... and the same is true for Venus.
I guess the tournaments are still trying to milk the last drop of profit from their image but it's getting really old.

It's not like they are contenders for anything big, or even small. They haven't won a single tournament in years now I think.

In interview she did not say it wAs injury, just that the season has been a disaster. This set is best she's played all season.

Kasatkina trying to get out of her slump, really unfortunate she drew Kerber in 1st round. But she's got 1-1 now!

Venus didn't win anything in 2017 but she had a really good year. Actually led the tour in prize money. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_WTA_Tour

What the matter with Kerber? She hitting topspin rollers now! Kasatkina giving a break back now! Terrible 3rd so far!

I know but that was 2 years ago.... Do you see her going anywhere but down from where she is now?

She has a fantastic career, she will be remembered as one of the greatest players of all times, she has everything: money, fame, etc... what motivates her to keep going when it's obvious she is not what she used to be?

Kerber-Kasatkina match kind of sucks for WTA level match. .Both makes tons of mistakes and hit the ball with low velocity!

I probably don't see her going anywhere. But if she still enjoys playing well good on her. But I don't know sometimes these ladies will make runs in tournaments out of the blue. I am not a big fan of these tournaments giving aging big stars wild cards but I guess I understand why they do. It would really annoy me if I was an up and coming young tennis athlete. But I guess thats the way it is. Ill edit that Venus somehow got direct entry into this tournament and she is ranked 49th. Riske who is ranked 38th had to go through Qualies. That just isn't right.

Andreescu v Bouchard will be an interesting one.

I have a feeling Bianca isn't ready to return but has done so so she can play her home country tournament.

She's only played 1 match since the Miami 4R where she retired. She won her RG 1R against Bouzkova, withdrew from her 2R match and hasn't been seen since.

Bouchard, well we know all about her. She hasn't won a singles match since Dubai in February. Currently on an 8 match losing streak.

Maybe Sharapova hopes that she will have kind of renaissance at 36-37 too? It's only 4 years away from now!

?! Take a look at the all-time WTA and the Grand slam record. Where is Sharapova?

It was about Venus, not about Sharapova, as far as I understand. Anyway Sharapova is in a good place, she's one of the 10 players who have a career Grand slam.

You are correct. The comments were about Venus but for the most part they apply to both - Sharapova and Venus. I don't see Sharapova playing tennis much longer anyway (she has other things going on outside tennis and she's 32 already) so why bother sticking around if she cannot be competitive? She has more to lose than gain from doing that unless she desires to prove something to herself .... which would be a different thing.

Because of the meldonium scandal people really underestimate Sharapova. She has more GS than some other great players that played during her time. It is really hard to imagine that she did better than Clijsters or Davenport in this respect, or any current WTA player bar Serena and Venus. She's vain, so she probably wants another big title just to prove that she still can win, but it will never happen.

The other thing which is crazy is of course the fact that she's just 1,5 year or so older than Kerber.

Yesterday was the best I’ve seen Maria play in a long while. Once they got to the 3rd set I was sure that she was going to fold quite easily but she fought very well. She obviously has been working on her cardio since she can’t use Meldonium anymore. I don’t think she’ll be the threat that she was in the past. She’s older, a poor mover and opponents won’t fear her like they used to. She still is a fighter and that will bring her some success but nothing like the “good ol’ days”.

Did anyone still here watch the full DK - Kerber match last night? Tennis channel switched to it early in the third. While it was a super competitive, fun to watch effort, jeesh, neither player looked to be in good form, to say the least. Great, much needed win for DK. Always love seeing her win. But, am I right on the 3rd set level of play?

Poor quality set. Basically, each player gave rally balls to their opponent until one of them missed. Watching Kerber play triggers me. She has such strength and power in her lower body and she refuses to use it for her serve. It's maddening. She just rolls in a half-assed serve to start the point and gets away with it. Ridiculous.

Watching the Azeranka-Giorgi match now! Giorgi is what Azarenka was 6 years ago! Azarenka does not have the power anymore on her groundstrokes and makes much more UE now! But Giorgi self-destructed away the 1st set anyways!

Both used lots of topspin moonball type groundstrokes and Kerber net volleys we’re almost UEs! Ugly match from both players!

Only watched the 3rd set between Kerber and Kasatkina but rather ugly tennis by both.

In another news, Venus is out in 1R. Honestly I thought she might get past CSN which is not in a great form herself, but .... This only tells in what kind of form Venus is and confirms that the WC was a pure business decision.
