Logically speaking, makes sense to have Osaka as #1 with 2 slam titles to her name. Pliskova looking to regain the #1 ranking two years after she last held it. Crazy thing is she’d be #1 not only without a slam title but also a slam final in the last 12 months.

Naomi with 2 slam titles in the past 12 months is certainly a big plus for her. But it seems that she's not done much since January. (Quite odd that she's only got one other WTA career title to her name). Not done very well in the past two slams and her best weeks for 2019 have been her QF finishes at Madrid and Rome.

Even with her AO title this year, she is only #6 in the WTA Race. Karolina OTOH has had a better 2019 overall. Has won abt 80% of all matches, I believe. She is #3 in WTA Race points -- behind Ashleigh and Simona. Only a SF finish at AO this year but she's done a bit better at the other two slams than Naomi. Also grabbed the tile at Rome and a Finalist at Miami. 2 other QF finishes at PM/P5 as well.

While she doesn't have any slam finishes in the past year to "legitimize" or bolster the #1 ranking, she certainly has enough match wins to legitimize the ranking.

Not surprised Wozniacki lost. Not sure how long she has on her career now especially with the arthritis diagnosis. As a fan of hers I’m just happy she finally got that slam and back to the #1 ranking.

She might be top 20 in the rankings but she’s #48 in the race rankings.

Man, I had to bounce after the first, that is a real bad result. I think most of us agree she’s probably gonna shut it down soon. Baby time.

Surprised at the lack of poll votes for this thread. Not too many willing to go out on a limb?

Even though she had a bit of a scare in R32, Simona is still the favorite in outrights betting odds. The odds have her followed by Serena, Karolina, and Naomi. The odds for those three are pretty close together but somewhat behind Simona and ahead of the rest of the pack.

Will have to see if Simona finds her game again, later today. She seemed pretty rusty against Jennifer Brady. (Looks like she had laid off for 2 or 3 weeks after her Wimbledon win). One or both ankles taped up and she did call in the trainer once or twice to deal with leg/ankle issues.

She had a bit of a warmup with Leylah Fernandez in doubles. But that was about it. To her credit, Brady played extremely well, possibly her best ever, to give Halep a hard time in R32.

I think so too.... Even if she sticks around for a bit longer, I don't think she's a threat on the tour anymore and since she won the elusive GS, she seems to be content and switched focus on her private life.....

If her ranking drops significantly next year, she will still probably get WCs to some tournaments here and there, just like Sharapova and Venus, to sell some extra tickets.

The guard is changing in WTA. The old guard is obviously winding down (Serena, Venus, Sharapova, Azarenka, Wozniacki, Kerber and some other old timers) and the new guard is coming up - Barty, Osaka, Bencic and a whole bunch of teenagers.....
There is a solid crop of players like Halep, Pliskova, Kvitova, Stephens, Muguruza, Svitolina, etc that have been at the top for some time and still have a significant say (give or take) and still in the game to make the transition between generations.

I think this trend is much more entertaining and better for the sport than what's happening in ATP where 3 guys have been ruling for so long and two generations of players are fighting over the crumbs left over from the royal table when it comes to titles.

Andreescu-Bertens underway but they may get rained on ( I'm 10km north-west from the site and it's raining now).

With a lot of talent in Women's game right now (Not necessarily producing best games) even R3 provides a lot of promising matches.

I agree. I'm actually enjoying WTA more than ATP right now. Of all the matches, I swear you can throw a rock and you'll hit a highly competitive, enjoyable match. I watched Bouchard/Andreescu yesterday and I really enjoyed it. Both are in good form, were playing well, and really making good decisions. High quality stuff.

One observation....I was expecting a lot more noise and support from the stands for Andreescu given the Romanian contingent is already there for Halep's match, topped by some from the Canadians.
But I guess the Romanian crowd's allegiance is with Halep for the most part.

Andreescu indirectly helped Halep to keep the #4 spot (still contingent of Svitolina).

I think is doable for Andreescu to take out Pliskova. It would be nice to have two youngsters in the SF if Kevin defeats Svitolina.
