Iga has speed and good reflexes - lots of good nervous energy, but she's making too many too many errors, particularly hitting balls out. Shows a lot of promise if accuracy improves.
Didn't Naomi actually make more UEs in the 1st set than Iga. But a few points more overall (prior to the TB). More DFs from Iga

Naomi'game is not the best but nevertheless I hope she wins this one as she is in a much better position to give Serena a run for the money and eventually take her out.

You're probably right about the UE count in this match. I was thinking more of her needing to improve shot placement accuracy to make it to the top levels, say the top 20. She does show promise to get there within a couple of years - hope she has a good coach.

Naomi on a hardcourt is the worst possible opponent Serena could face at this stage in her career. Even more so considering the way she moved tonight and against Mertens.

I just watched the highlights from Bencic - Svitolina match and noticed that Bencic completely changed her outfit DURING the first set - somewhere between 1-4 and 2-5. I find this very strange. Any idea why?

Would be nice to see Serena win a tournament in the lead up to a slam. Seems her attitude has been to just rock up without match play and expect to go deep or play one match and then withdraw.

Beating Osaka would be huge, very excited for the match. That one might need a match thread though to make sure this thread doesn’t get hijacked by trolls.

Serena hasn’t played/won a final outside of a slam since the Italian Open in 2016!

Her last non slam hard court title was Cincy 2015.

This is also the first time she’s won back to back matches at a tournament since Indian Wells last year.

Crazy.

Could easily see any player winning their QF matches:

Kenin v (6) Svitolina
(3) Pliskova v Andreescu
Bouzková v (4) Halep
(8) Serena v (2) Osaka

Would be quite surprised if it does end up following the rankings and has Svitolina v Pliskova and Halep v Osaka.

Osaka better be motivated to win tonight and give all she's got on the court because I'm pretty confident Serena will be motivated as hell to beat the crap out of her. Her form may not help her this time around but pretty sure she'll do everything in her power to win the match.
No one who beat Serena in a GS final, especially robbing her from achieving the record she's chasing, should expect any mercy from her in a subsequent encounter.

I would love to see Serena win tonight. But Osaka is basically young Serena, she does everything better at this point. With maybe exception of net play.

Iga's current game reminds me of Osaka's old game. Lots of gutsy big winner shots and UEs - especially the UE. Naomi then cleaned up her UE, but continue her aggressive style play and the rest we know what she won.

Hoping to see the same happening for Iga. Promising young player.

The way Svitolina is playing it will be hard for Kenin to get the last break back before Svitolina is serving for the 1st set!

Andreescu is just all over these Pliskova serves, insane considering she’s ‘meant’ to have one of the best served on tour.
