Thiem has time on his side surely, he may need to avoid Nadal in the end (one can only hit so many jumping backhands from shoulder height), but figure it's likely he'll get one of these sometime later.

Rafa much more beatable on non clay if it’s not his A game that’s definitely true. That said even still it’s a short list of people that have actually capitalized on that and usually it’s been Fed or Djoker doing it not the rest of the tour.

I'm interested to see Nadal's run at Wimbledon this year. See if 2018 was an anomaly or if he's "back" on grass. That's my immediate post RG thought.

absurd how some people here are criticizing Thiem, he had to play 4 days in a row, Djokovic in the SF and there was the clay GOAT waiting the very next day. Literally something impossible to absolve physically. He has the game to compete with Nadal, but there was no way he could last for 5 sets here.
Congrats to Nadal anyway, he was able to maintain an incredible level through the whole match, which is beyond impressive.

Nadal always has some doubts in his mind. That was the culmination of a tough clay season for him. He doesn’t always celebrate a FO championship by crying, in his later years anyways.

RAFA with masterful move after that 2nd set by taking a Bathroom break and shoe malfunctioning story. This break completely negated all the momentum Thiem built up by winning the 2nd set

Now, to real questions.

As a Rafa fan, I don't enjoy his RG titles as much, especially past his 10th.

For some reason, everything past that number doesn't feel special anymore in this regard.

Instead, I would appreciate much more a title in the AUS. Only one there, difficult af.

Or even so, only one, only one title in Wimbledon. More difficult.

But as a fan, I would appreciate them more. That's why I would appreciate also if he would play less and less tournaments, even masters1000 so he could focus more on slams. Thoughts?

He made deep because he faced all clay courters in first 4 rounds. Once he gets deep - he becomes very difficult to put away. In 2014 and 2017 he showed similarly high level but got big servers in early rounds. 2018 was not anomaly.

My thoughts are that Nadal is an overall good player...

BUT, he's old, and he doesn't have the same fitness, his game isn't well suited to the surface...

He can make a good tournament compared to his previous results, but I see his last year's performance there mostly as an improvement as a player, not as a grass player.

If he faces a tall player who knows how to play at the net and who's a good server and plays well and is on his day...

...Rafa can leave before QF.

I would say more the latter than the former. Thiem probably started to tire by the 4th, but he was better in the 4th than the 3rd, so whatever.

Him playing 4 days in a row is not the real issue, he's one of the two fittest guys on tour and in his physical prime. These guys play 4 days in a row en route to ATP titles week in and week out. The issue is that Nadal was fresh and rested in comparison, and he made that count after dropping the second.
