The surface will take away Fed’s serve point in, point out. He will be forced to rally because the surface dictates it. Rafa has stepped up his form. He’ll be in Rome form again.

The approach that people have towards the sport here is generally unhealthy. There is an emotional investment people have in their favorite players that should be reserved for family and the real world. Rafa is my guy and I want him to win, but we all need to keep things in perspective.
Yeah completely agree with that and it is very unhealthy unless you use it just to release yourself from the daily stress. It that case I think it's actually healthy even though it may look crazy to observers.

It would take a miracle for Federer to beat Nadal in RG. But then, I thought Nadal had AO 2017 in his bag back then.
Among the top players, playing tough 5 setters or not in late stages is really important. The way Federer is playing, either Stan or Tsitsipas with near full tank would probably have taken him out.
Therefore, how tough Federer's resistance is against Nadal, length of Novak-Zverev, Thiem-Khachanov, and especially Novak-Thiem (assuming bigger seeds win) will play a big role in the outcome of the final.
As things are standing, Nadal has the advantage.

I just vote for Fedr in 3 for the Lolz :sneaky:
So you're one of the 14! Nadal has a 13-2 h2h against Fed on clay. The last time Federer beat Nadal on clay was over 10 years ago. Nadal has breezed through his (admittedly easy) draw. Fed has a 2% chance of winning this barring Nadal getting injured.

That is not a reliable page, it creates an unoffical ELO, an unoffical GOAT list based on debatable criteria, and unofficial predictions.

To cite Ultimate Tennis is like citing Tennis Talk Warehouse. It is just a site run by tennis fans, not the ATP or the ITF.
It's much better for stats than the ATP site, but the winning% are not supposed to reflect the real chances. Better look at betting odds for that.

More than 2% chance :D

Nadal has to return much better. He has probably forgotten when he broke Fed last. If he doesn't find a way to break Fed, he is toast.

Federer has held his last 31 service games against Nadal

The last time Nadal broke serve in this rivalry was four meetings and almost two-and-a-half years ago in the 2017 Australian Open final—he broke Federer in the first game of the fifth set and eventually built a 3-1 lead, but the Swiss won the last five games of the match for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory and his 18th Grand Slam title.

Federer didn’t even face a break point in nine service games the last time these two met, in the final of the 2017 Shanghai Masters, which he won in an hour and 12 minutes, 6-4, 6-3.

Federer should just forfeit the match.

In all seriousness, we said it would be a HUGE success for him to be in the second week of RG. Just to have the opportunity to even play a SF and reach Nadal in the draw is a moral victory in itself.
Would be cool if Fred could just go out there, swing freely and see what happens - maybe prolong the match a bit. Taking a set would be extraordinary
Here’s my take on the match, as an admittedly biased Fed fan.

First off, he should keep all options available including retiring before the match (although it’s not in his nature and never has been).

Reasons for a possible retirement could be; feeling his chances are slim to none for a victory, feeling his last four year win record against Nadal would be preserved, feeling that this would be a perfect time to reveal a nagging injury he sustained earlier in the tournament, feeling that he has done very well thank you very much after a three year absence from the F.O. and would like to cash his chips out now while still on a winning streak.

If he decides to play Nadal (which is most likely) he knows he has a chance but only if he comes out playing with different strategies than he has used in the past on clay.
He has studied the tapes of his previous matches against Nadal at the F.O. dozens of times. He knows what Nadal will do. He knows that what he has done in the past against him has never worked at RG.

Things he would have to do besides mixing things up at every chance possible, hitting big F.H. topspin (the kind Nadal routinely hits), pounding his B.H. with this topspin (just as Nadal does to him), standing further back in general (returning serves and for rallies).

In other words, playing the game the same way Nadal plays.

In any event, not matter the outcome, he can go away from the match feeling good about his clay game considering his long absence from the surface.

Djokovic was always able to closely match Nadal at RG. He almost beat him a few times and absolutely destroyed him in 2015. Federer, on the other hand, has never been able to compete with Nadal at RG. He always got completely destroyed.

Will this time be the same? Who knows. But it looks pretty likely. Nothing in Federer's game right now convinces me that this will be anything other than a comfortable 3 or 4 set win for Nadal.

35.2% of voters predicting a Federer win. Seriously guys come one. Use head not heart otherwise it's false. Would love to say Fed but just can't see anything other than Nadal in straight sets with maybe 1 set being close.
A better poll would have been this:

"If wagering your child's life on the outcome of the match was mandatory, who would you pick to win?"

I'm pretty sure it would be 100% Nadal.

Well I want Federer to win obviously but I think the most sensible guess would be Nadal in 3 or 4. I went for 4.

@Mark-Touch ....
So basically you’re a Fed fan and not a tennis fan.
20 GS, $500 million, biggest name ever in Tennis.... And you think he should retire so he doesn’t get depressed if he loses to the best clay court player to ever step foot on Earth?

Def a contender for worst Fed take this year.

No I am a Fed fan AND a tennis fan as well.
But I wouldn't be depressed if he retired before the match like all the other tennis fans around the world would be. :)

But relax. The chances of him retiring before the match are slim to none!
And I'd love to have the last laugh on everyone if he were to pull this one off.

Stop spouting nonsense. 2008 was the only blowout. The rest were competitive four setters, even once in 2006 Fed won a set 6-1.

Nadal d. Federer in RG

3-1 (63 46 64 63) in 2005 SF
3-1 (16 61 64 76) in 2006 F (Federer team watching tape of that 1st set?)
3-1 (63 46 63 64) in 2007 F
3-0 (61 63 60) in 2008 F
3-1 (75 76 57 61) in 2011 F

?-? in 2019 SF
Looks like a 3-0 with one bakery product.

Yes I’m sure you wouldn’t be depressed. Apparently, you care more about whether Fed loses than Fed does.

It’s really strange. This is quite possibly the last time they’ll play at Roland Garros. And you’d rather him forfeit than watch them face-off.

He’s 38. You should be jubilant he can still reach the semi-final of a slam. Let alone on clay.

A typical result would be a fast start for Fed with Rafa catching up, but the old man prevakling in the breaker. After that Rafa wins the next three by brutally pounding the passing shots.

well looks like Yoko is going to get rained out tomorrow he'll have to place quarter-final on Thursday however it looks like Friday the semi-finals might be rained out so they'll have to play on Saturday and then only one day rest to play on Sunday I would love if the mighty fed took down the doll on Saturday and face Joco on Sunday

Novak is going to be wear out by Z and Thiem. Not going to have time for rest. Same old story every RG.

But if fed or Nadal play on Saturday as well as Joko and whomever then what does that mean for Sunday who does that favor

Bovada has it lined as Nadal -1000/Federer +600. Sportsbook has it -800/+575. My local guy has it at -900/+550 with an O/U of 34.5 games and the spread of games as Nadal -6.5.

Obviously as a Federer fan you will come rushing to his defense and say that. But any non-Federer fan can plainly see that he gets destroyed by Nadal every time at RG. It's never even close to competitive. Never went to a 5th set and only 2 tiebreaks in the 5 meetings. Hardly competitive.

Djokovic is the only guy who has actually been able to consistently compete with Nadal at RG, winning once and should have won that time when it went to 5 sets.

Federer won the last 6 matches against Nadal!!! Last win for Nadal was January 2014! That is in both minds for sure. Pressure 100% by Nadal, Federer has nothing to loose. The clay court does not really matter because it is faster then many hardcourts they played the last times. Only problem for both is Djokovic...

Every year Djokovic gets screwed by the weather and has to play for consecutive days. It's sickening tbh. It never happens to Nadal, his luck is out of this world.

Lets hope the weather forecast takes a BIG turn and they can play tomorrow.

Please don't put words in my mouth Rookie!
I said it is an option for Fed, show me where I said I would rather him forfeit the match???

Yes I am very happy he has reached the semi-final. In fact I am probably happier than even you are! :)

rooting for Fed to win. But i don't see it happening. Nadal will roll back clock and punish Fed's BH like he always did. Plus clay gives him time to run around his FH.

I'm tired of seeing Nadal win RG, but not sure how this match will change anything. Same old match up and same old results to follow.

Regardless, GO FED!!!!!
