H2H is 1-1, both meetings this year on hard-court. Federer battled his way past recent nemesis in Coric, saving MPs along the way. Stefanos was far too good for the patchy Fognini in the previous round. Who takes this one?

Anyway, my prediction: Tsitsipas in 3, 6-4 5-7 6-3.
Full on handwringerer.

I though Federe finished Coric strongly today so I think he's still got some life in him. Tsits has played back to back finals in the last two weeks and doesn't have quite as appealing stats as clayerer. Peak Clayerer in 2; he knows he's only got to finish this and Saturday might easily get rained out. Looks like laterer matches possible on Saturday and maybe Sunday, but Monday Final a real possibility. Wish he could somehow make the final and take it over Novak.:giggle:

I hope Fed wins. I would be happy to lose to Nadal, not like one clay loss would mean anything, but I'd like him to win this one...

But he won't. Tsitsipas 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Would like Fed to win, but I don't think he'll get past Tsitsipas. It's already amazing that he won the two matches in one day. It'll be tough to recover from that in time for the match tomorrow.

The thing that gives me pause is that Stefanos has also played a lot of matches recently, and he had a late one against Fognini. So maybe just maybe ... anyway, doesn't matter, Roger's clay season already exceeds my expectations.

If Tsitsipas had had a barn burner against Fognini deep into the evening, then maybe I'd go with Fed, but with a straights set win... Fed had two long, intense matches today that, at 37+, will probably be hard to recover from. Tsitsipas should win this in straights, I think.

Sadly, this is true. On court 90 minutes versus 250 minutes, on clay, and without much recovery.
Federer's goose will be cooked, though he may put on a good struggle in the second set, out of pride.

The least we can say is that his return to clay demonstrates to all his mental fortitude. He had no right to win that many clay matches.

Tsitsipas in 2.
I don't think Federer at his age can recover from a 5-sets-stretched-apart day in < 24 hrs well enough to beat Tsitsipas. The youngster is on the rise.

Plus, how motivated will Federer be to face Nadal in the semifinals here? Let's be honest.

LOL. The handwringering now includes false data? Tsits 160 minutes and back to back finals in the weeks before. Tsitsipas also finished later.

I'll admit these numbers were back of the enveloppe. Not sure how long Federer spent on court either, but a lot more anyway.

It'll be his 12th match in 19 days. Like a 3-week slam.

On any other day I'd grant you your argument, but Federer was just overwrought at the end against Coric.

Tsitsipas really should win here. Federer is probably on his last legs, don't think he should try to grit out this match, might affect his season later on. I wish he goes all out in the first set and if he wins, try to finish the match by winning the second. Another 3 set loss isn't worth it, get out from Rome quickly and start preparing for RG.

i agree, although in general i never really got wanted fed to lose eearly to avoid nadal. sure its one more added to the h2h, but if he is going to lose, let it be to the likes of nadal

I dont discard the old man for this match, but the Greek is playing good tennis and it wont be easy after this terrible exhausting day. However, I still believe he can win here, and then will be demolished by Nadal :(

I think he says “ Oh, man, Novak is the real GOAT. I should say that in my next interview”. And then Mirka slaps him.

At least that’s how I see it. :-D:-D:-D

I was going to do something with the term peak clayerer, but luckily someone through something up (Greenie probably saw my threat.;))

What are your thoughts on the age of the field in Rome? Seven of eight quarter-finalists are 26 or older; five of them are 30+ (Federer, Verdasco, Nadal, Djokovic, Del Potro). Isn't clay supposed to be a young man's surface?

I think what Fed did today was umbileeble! I was elated when he pulled off his 2nd match win. And, I do think he has a fighting chance tomorrow... you just can't ever count out the Sorcerer. But, I'm already a happy Fedfan, with what he's accomplished thus far. As for tomorrow, que sera, sera.

I'll be rooting for Roger, but I actually kind of hope he loses. He needs rest and should let that blister heal too.

Best case scenario is an exhausted Fed meeting Rafa in the semis. And I'm not looking forward to that.

So, another challenge to beat two tops back to back offers itself soon. I think it's too early yet, but I just like to be skeptical.

“It's part of the plan at some point to get physically better, do everything better, be more professional…because Djokovic and Nadal have been doing well in tournaments over and over again, week by week,” said Tsitsipas. “I think most of them have won Madrid, Rome, Monte-Carlo…the consistency level is just insane, it’s amazing. I really hope I get close to that. It is one of my dreams and my goals to be consistent with every single tournament that I play.”

Maybe Tsitsipas will throw a chair during the first set, so Fed can get some rest!
