Lol, I don't think even you believe this deep down.
I do actually. Check out RG2015 final. Same comment was made. Stanimal 2.0 in 4. And it's not disrespect to Novak Djokovic by any means. I believe styles make matches and Novak doesn't have the guile, creativity or technical ability of a Federer who plays a variety of shots to nullify Stan's game. Novak can only do what he always does against Stan. Stay on the baseline and try to fight him toe to toe.

Let's put it this way, I'd rather have Djokovic's trophy cabinet any day of the week(and so would Wawrinka).

Novak: I congratulate Stan, I don’t want to talk about my injuries. I retired, I told you it’s my left shoulder and that is it. #USopen

Novak: I am not being offended, I don’t pay too much attention. I respect others and I hope others respect me. I understand that the crowd wanted to see the whole match...

Novak: It is very frustrating, but I am not the first nor the last one to have to retire. #USOpen

Novak: The pain was constant for weeks, sometimes less and sometimes more. #USOpen

Novak: I hope I’ll be healthy, I like my chances for the rest of the season. #USOpen

Novak: I hope I can play for many more years. #USOpen

ewww you post a bit in the fed fan thread but damn ofc i forget you are a rafa fan

No, If Fed wins, the race is OVER.
If Nadal wins, there will still be a suspense and drama for what will happen.

From a neutral point, it is the best.

Nadal may have the best chance of all at finishing the season as #1 since he ended his season at US Open last year in the semis. So there's the US Open, plus the Asian swing along with Paris and London where he could really accumulate a lot of points and chase down the #1 ranking whereas Djokovic still has a lot of points to defend including several finals and a Masters win. The race is on. Hopefully Nadal doesn't injure himself trying to chase down the #1 ranking.

Novak: Sorry, what was the question again?
Novak: No, I did not have sex with that woman.
Novak: Novak
Novak: I am sleepy
Novak: Amor y paz
Novak: Novak, Novak, Novak

Djokovic did the right thing! Why get hurt even more and still end up loosing the match! Smart move to retire when you have pain. Not everyone is as tough as Rafa!

The Stanimal BH is a thing of beauty. Federer would've been slicing back that shot and neutralizing Stan's power. Novak on the other doesn't have any idea what to do other than try to fight fire with fire against Stan from the back of the court and he continously gets trapped doing the same thing over and over against Stan.
Fed would’ve sliced vs Joker as well but the slice doesn’t bother him. It’s the power from Stan’s backhand that stifles Novak.

DJOKOVIC MEETS WITH PRESS
On his prognosis:

"Evaluation is to come. Obviously I did a lot of different treatments and diagnostics and everything in the last couple weeks. I obviously have to do it again and see how the shoulder reacts. Not playing is going to help speed up recovery. I'm planning to play Tokyo, and hopefully I'll be able to do so."

On the scope of the injury:

"The pain was constant for weeks now. Some days higher; some days with less intensity and obviously taking different stuff to kill the pain instantly. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. You just know, I guess, when you feel like you're not able to hit the shot anymore."

On missing a chance to move closer to Federer's 20 majors:

"Look, it's no secret that I have of course the desire and a goal to reach the most Slams, and reach Roger's record. But at the same time, it's a long road ahead hopefully for me. I hope I can play for many more years. I'm planning to. I mean, I don't see an end behind the corner at all. Now it's a matter of keeping my body and mind in shape and trying to still peak at these kind of events that are majors and that are the most significant in our sport."

WAWRINKA'S REACTION
On the way the match ended:

"It’s never the way you want to finish a match. I’m really sorry for Novak. He’s a good friend, an amazing champion. We’ve played amazing battles all of my career. I want to keep my level [from] tonight. I was playing super good tennis. I’m happy to be back."

On showing signs of his 2016 champion form:

"It’s been really tough since my surgery. It’s took me two years now to be back at that level. The atmosphere is always something special to play a night session."

He will only play in Paris Bercy and in London.
He already said that.
His 2 main priorities now are win his 4th US Open title and his Wedding with his longtime girlfriend.

This win should prove confidence booster for Wawrinka. I take this as confirmation of him having returned to Slam winning level. I predicted fourth Slam for him in beginning of season and I think he is on right path now.

For Djokovic this loss complicates things a lot. Nadal still leads him in race. If he goes deep in USO, he would get 1000+ lead. Even Federer would jump into the race if he wins USO. So #1 ranking would be on the line with three ATGs battling for it. Should be interesting.

Beating a half-powered Djokovic doesn't mean he's back to being able to win 7 best of 5 matches. That's a whole different challenge for him, physically.

Even if fully fit, he still has to potentially go through Federer & Nadal, 2 players he does not match up well against.

It's odd how Nadal is leading Djokovic in the race considering Djokovic has won 2 Slams to Nadal's 1 Slam thus far this season.

He's beaten a full powered Djokovic several times. Can't keep making that excuse.

Yeah, pretty much what I was expecting. Congrats to @junior74 and all the other good Wawrinka fans. I just hope Novak gets back to full fitness for the rest of the season but I can't say I'm feeling too optimistic. :(

Thanks, man!
Thrilled on behalf of Stan, but so sad for Novak and all his good fans... All the best :)

It's wawrinka makes him to look half powered. Usual stuff. Djokovic Goated in 3rd round, no sign of injury affecting him two sets today either.

Peak Stan did. This is not peak Stan by any stretch, and I won't believe he's physically capable of winning a slam until I see him make a final and compete hard in it.

He’s getting married in October and I don’t think he’s playing until Paris and then the YEC in London. Unless he wins both AND the USO I don’t think he’ll finish the year #1

I was truly stunned by Djokovic's loss. Still he won 2 of the 4 Slams this year. If Rafa wins USO they will have each won 2 slams so ideally I am hoping that is what happens. This will help Rafa enormously since I truly believe that Novak is the only one he is afraid of in a significant way. I think Rafa will win his 4th USO! :)

Novak gon get shunted by some Swiss diesel power. Maybe it's this round, maybe a later round, but it's happening. It looks cute when you're in front of it, until it starts moving...

Novak might not have been 100% tonight and didn't really need much of a shunt, but heavyweight champs and mighty warriors don't retire like this. Djokovic might end up with this record or that but he won't be my GOAT with retirements like this. A few more slices and finish out the match, take the beatdown like a man. This is why Fed stands alone above Noel and Ralph.

Coming off a fresh viewing of the USO16 F and Stan's matches in this tournament, this just wasn't a good level. Stan played solid enough but didn't even really need the BH DTL to break down Novak's BH for obvious reasons. Stan's match Vs Sinner was a much higher level than this and has probably set him up. If Stan can hit the levels of hitting in the Sinner match and hold his act together, it might not matter who is on the other side of the net.

Thank you for the post and analysis. I liked reading it. I would be remiss if I didn't say that I don't agree with everything.

Yes, Stan is a hard opponent for Novak usually. But I think the problem is that you're thinking of the Stan of past.
Let me ask you this: Have you seen Stan this year, and last year? His game is way way off compared to before. His movement sucks and most of his signature DTL shots do NOT work now because he is almost ALWAYS late.
His ROS has become worse than ever. He makes head scratching errors on neutral forehand balls. Did you even watch him against Lorenzi? Not even his serve is consistent.

Novak is closer to his peak/prime and Stan is waaaay off and a shadow of what he used to be. How will the match be competitive then.
I'd be VERY surprised by anything other than a straight set victory for Novak.

So how about Stan not coming close to winning a set now?

Why couldn't Novak just admit he had no answer for Stan last night, and take the L like a big boy. The fact that he plans to continue his schedule as usual makes this decision to retire all the more preposterious. He should be out for at least a couple months.

Djokovic has a really weird relationship with injuries I find. Shrouded in secrecy even when the truth wouldn’t change anything, massive effects one day, seemingly none the next. Not to mention how demonstrative he is about them on court. And this from a guy who’s actually been pretty fortunate physically.

I hate to think how he’d cope if he had the injuries that a Delpo or even a Stan had had.

Djokovics retirement is the worst case scenario for US open.
Believe me.
We will get no rematches
We will never be sure if Fed or Nadal would beat healthy Nole in Us open.
its like we move 10 years back when nole wasnt a such a big threat.
we will get a FEDAL match like back than.

thats all.

Its true. Remember Wimby '16? Novak would not even fully admit to having an injury after that match. It is always bizarre with him, when Roger is usually quite forthright with what the problem is.
