these two 90s born star lose grand slam final at nadal and djokovic

Both were up to five sets.

very long match and very fun match i think

what i want to know who 's form was better and who 's the more impressive whole tournament ?

what do you think ?

medvedev was closer to win then thiem

but thiem was impressive than med's 19 uso form

thiem beat nadal in 2020 AO QF

Better tournament is debatable for sure, that's an interesting conversation. In the final I don't think there's much question. Medvedev may never have been on top the way Thiem was because of the hole he got in early, but Thiem had plenty of say in pissing that title away with his idiotic attempts at backhands down the line in particular, while Medvedev well and truly had to be beaten.

hmmm...who hacked the real @skypadq?

No, he wasn't. Nadal was leading 5-2 in the 5th set, and Medvedev only had 1 break point in the whole set. On the other hand, Thiem had 2 break points in the 5th set. Both matches were pretty similar, and both Medvedev and Thiem had similar chances.

no , in fifth set i remember that med has the four break point chance

Both Nadal and Djokovic should have won in straight sets. Both were cruising then for some reason lost their focus.

They are so far ahead of the rest apart from a healthy Roger they must know they can sweep the board again

What the hell are you talking about? Medvedev had 5 break points in the 5th set and converted 1 of them. And Nadal saved the other 4 himself, by forcing errors.

The Chad of a Mad Lad Bullsheet Russian would win in 4 sets me thinks

Medvedev was in the middle of his epic 6 finals in a row run. Hope he reaches that peak again some day, because it was truly fun while it lasted. He was the better player, in the moment, to answer OPs question.

Medvedev was GOATing. Djokovic (as much as I hate to admit it) went some ways in letting Thiem into the match. The russian had Nadal on his knees, literally.

Nah, Nadal let him in that match. He got tight when he was up a break at 3-2, after being up 2 sets to love, and at 4 all break point where he bottled an overhead on break point where he could serve for it. His level dropped and let Medvedev in the door. They both let their opponents into the match.

Sorry, you are being a hater here, dismissing Nadal's level and the level of his final opponent to make his victory look less impressive. Nadal only made ONE mistake in the third set, when he was up a break and 3-2. He failed an easy volley which would have helped him to be 4-2 in the third. But after that clearly failed volley from Nadal, Medvedev did raise his level and played like a robot. Nadal did not play bad, Medvedev was simply an unplayable robot. Medvedev applied the "B plan". By B plan, I mean being more aggresive. Offensively, Medvedev was cleaning the lines with winners and playing ultra-aggresive. Defensively, Medvedev was a wall that runs a lot for his height and could cover the court in long rallies. Not to mention that his stamina level was also impressive, Medvedev showed no signs of fatigue while Nadal could barely breathe in the 5ht set. So Nadal only made one mistake in the third set (that volley), the rest was due to Medvedev's amazing level (the same level that allowed him to defeat Djokovic in Cincinnati 2019 and win 2 Masters 1000 in late 2019). But of course, it is easier to dismissh both the level of Nadal and the level of Medvedev to make his victory appear less impressive.

This. The crowd got Medvedev into it and he turned UP. He was the best HC player of the summer after all, even beating Imhotep.

At which tournament does this hypothetical match take place? How about Medvedev winning if they'd met at the US Open and Thiem winning if they'd met down under.

Pipe down Skippy. No one said Medvedev didn't play well, which he did, but Nadal opened the door and let him in the match. Of course Medvedev played amazing last summer and how could I possibly make this victory less worthy? If anything you are reinventing what happened. Nadal had more than once chance in that 3rd set. He had multiple break points at 4 all where Medvedev stepped up and closed the door on most of them but he had one where they were in a neutral rally and Nadal gained the upperhand and had an overhead, and he netted it. That was break point and he had a great chance to break at 4 all in the 3rd to serve for it and got tight, and Medvedev raised his level. That's how I saw it.

It still was an almost choke job from Nadal regardless of Medvedev's high level.
There's no way Rafael Nadal of all people, given how big of a fighter & front runner he is, should be pushed to brink after going 2 sets to love and a break up in 3rd set in a BestOf5 match, at a grandslam final. That's just not him. He was thinking about the 19th slam and record and that made him almost choke the title away. Thank God he's rafa and not Roger (wim19)

Medvedev has that kind of game that would frustrate the hell out of Thiem. If this hypothetical match ever took place I'd take Med over Thiem.

To be fair, even if he didn't miss this overhead it would still not give him the point. He was hitting it into the middle of the court, so he would probably need at least 1 more shot. Yes, Nadal got tight, but it's not something new to him. During his career he always got tight when being close to victory. And by the way, RG 2013 semifinal is a classical example. (even though you obviously don't want to admit it and just cry that Djokovic is somehow the one who "choked")

Both Nadal and Djokovic made it more difficult on themselves, matches that both could have won a lot easier had they not blinked. Thiem and Medvedev both took advantage of the opportunity, but ultimately neither was good enough in the end.

You should check your stats. It's not the first time when you are clearly wrong.
Nor will it be the last one, I will keep being wrong from time to time. You are also wrong sometimes, and everybody is ocasionally. But no need to be so aggresive in your comments.

It would be a 5 set chokefest, flip a coin on who'd be less scared to win.

Kinda like Wozniacki - Halep 2018 AO final.

To be fair to those two, they were playing in horrible conditions that year. Halep had to be admitted to hospital straight after the match with dehydration problems.

Sure, I remember. There was criticism of the heat rule for AO that year. Wozniacki had one more day off as well.

That said, it's also due to Halep playing style. Wozniacki was the one forcing the issue off the ground, she played to win while Halep was being passive.

Halep was more reactive than Caroline that match, yes.

The semifinals are played on the same day.

I will vote at the end of the year the player who actually does win a major.

Medvedev was probably better level-wise, although I can’t help but think both djokodal opened the door for them in that match. Rafa was in prime position to win in straights and Novak should’ve closed in 3/4 sets at most
