From down here near the court, looking up, the Stadium looks to be shaped like a huge wedding cake,
and once past the gentler foothills of the box seats the aluminum stands seem to rise away on all sides almost vertically,
so vertiginously steep that a misstep on any of the upper stairs looks like it would be certain and hideous death.

Few weeks away yet. But Wimbledon's in the rearview. Time to turn the page.

What are we expecting?

Same ol' same ol'? The emergence of a long-awaited heir?

It's summertime, people. And it's hot as blazes.

Let's hope that they've got the ventilation sorted out this year, eh? :)

What Federer needs in Cincy to jump over Nadal and get seed number 2 at US Open 2019?

how to read that - examples:

Nadal withdraws from both Montreal and Cincy - Federer needs 3R in Cincy
Nadal makes 3R in Montreal and withdraws from Cincy - Federer needs QF in Cincy
Nadal makes SF in Montreal and 3R in Cincy - Federer needs F in Cincy
Nadal makes F in Montreal and QF in Cincy - Federer needs to win in Cincy
Nadal wins in Montreal - Federer is not able to jump over him

@threehandedbackhand Thanks for this, and make sure to keep this post because 50 people will be asking in the coming weeks, "What does Fed have to do to get the #2 seed at the USO."

I think Nadal is a fool to play both Cincy and Montreal at age 33, but we'll see what happens.

I would expect he pulls out of TRS if he goes deep at Montreal. That happened last year.

I think Nadal is just entered into Cinci in case he loses really early in Montreal. It worked out for him when he played both in 2017

I doubt being #2 seed would help Federer that much. If he wants to win, he needs to win against Djokovic. Doesn't matter if it is semi or the final. He has lost last 9 out of 11 matches against him. I think that is worse than his record against Nadal at any point.

Personally, I fancy a new guy getting the trophy. US open conditions can be unpredictable and non BIG-3 players seem to get a break in this major most compared to the other slams.

In the last 10 years, 6 different players have won this trophy and Federer is not even in that list.

The obvious advantage would be possibly avoiding playing both Nadovic if the draw gods set it up differently than Wimby’19. There is a big drop off to whomever winds up #4. Of the realistic contenders for that slot, only Injurkori has made a solitary slam final on HC.

Djokovic clear favourite but still feel he isn't playing invincible tennis and could get beaten for sure if not firing on all cylinders like Wimbledon final but someone needs to step up to stop him or else this is his title for the taking. Also want to see nadal djokovic encounter on this slow high bouncing court which will surely give rafa more chances than at Australia

Oh yeah, I had no doubt of the identity of the culprit but I just confirmed by sneaking a peak at the credits. Apparently this juvenile reacts to any “angry eyes” cast his/her way by retaliatory snipes. I got one for disagreeing with the AO change of surface conspiracy theory and got flamed in the Jannik Sinner thread when that imbecile had never once posted there and probably doesn’t even know who he is.

This is the kindergarten we attempt to survive through and some less than analytical tinkerer just decided to give the sugared-out kids more cookies to fuel a bigger food fight. Maybe you will talk some sense into your contact at HQ.

Last year was nightmarish with that awful humidity! Was there really any improvement they could make in the ventilation for Arthur Ashe? I don’t remember it being discussed.

Yeah, remains baffling to me that they allowed that to happen.

Your guess is as good as mine on the remedy. Have heard nothing.

Cooler weather would do the trick presumably, but I would have to imagine they've taken steps to address that ridiculous flaw in the design.

I've tried to get that answer before on here. No one seems to have information. o_O

Fedr was a fool to play Toronto and Cincinatti at age of 33.

I think Nadal is right to play Montreal, where he has more chance than Cincy. If Nadal win Montreal, he will be seed 2 at US open regardless Fed's result at Cincy and Nadal will withdraw Cincy accordingly.

Kyrgios in live atp rankings at around 34-35 will surely now finish in seeding position for us open and if its 25-32 I hooe Us open rigs it to give djokovic-kyrgios 3rd round

After current legends are no longer in the running for the biggest prizes...

...would these major tourneys possibly reduce their prize monies?

Probably re-allocate at a minimum, no?

Someone had floated a theory that younger talents can't tap into the necessary level of mindfulness in the same way as the preceding generation. Because of social media addiction.

Makes sense to me. And it would seem strange to reward this kind of watered-down commitment with the same king's ransoms.

Agreed on all of it, including the reasons (though I'm sure there is more to it than that). I'd add that the marketplace is going to do it all for them anyway. The ratings will plummet and take the TV and sponsorship money with them irregardless and unrespective of any moral crusades to the contrary.

It was a joke!
:)

Either way, Medvedev has proven its worth so far in tournaments to the best of 3 sets; Except for his good performance in the AO (where he lost with Joker) his performances in the Majors are still disappointing.
And that he is a year older than Zverev.

Loss against Djokovic was no shame

Early loss in Paris was understandable cause he is a clay mug

Wimbledon was a big letdown the match was on his racquet but at the end he imploded

Which do you think of the two Russian tennis players have more potential to achieve important things in their careers: Khachanov vs. Medvedev?
Khachanov, he preforms better in the bo5 and better record against top 10 players

Update.
The ONLY way for Federer to get seed #2 at the USO is as follows:

1) Nadal must lose against Medvedev in Montreal, and
2) Nadal must be eliminated before SF in Cincy, and
3) Federer must win in Cincy

Looks very unlikely.

Kyrgios seems to have sealed a seeding spot for Us open and could end up in 17-24 bracket with a good showing at the real slam.

If Fed secures #2 , Fed gets Nadal in the SF and Djoko in the final.

If Fed stays at #3, Fed gets Djoko/Nadal in the SF and Nadal/Djoko in the final.

Not sure whats the big deal here.

The 2 scenarios you mentioned, latter is perfect but first one includes another scenario in which fed gets a thiem in semi and djokovic/nadal in final and this one is a big one imo

Delpo out of the tournament (knee injury). That means he'll lose all the points he made for reaching the final last year and could drop to the 40s in the rankings. Heartbreaking.
